Expedia Group confirmed on February 25, 2025, that it had carried out additional layoffs. The company did not disclose how many employees were affected or provide a list of roles. GeekWire later reported that marketing and creative teams were affected, citing posts from workers on LinkedIn.
What Expedia confirmed in February 2025
An Expedia spokesperson told GeekWire the company was adapting to changing traveler and industry needs. The spokesperson said that meant “refining our marketing strategies, improving efficiencies, and reallocating resources to areas with the greatest business impact to drive customer engagement.” GeekWire’s February 25, 2025 report quoted the statement but did not name the spokesperson.
How many employees were affected?
Expedia did not disclose the number of people affected by the February 2025 layoffs. The company also did not publish a role-by-role list, so no precise total or full breakdown is established by its statement.
For scale only, GeekWire reported that Expedia Group had 16,500 employees across nearly 50 countries at the end of 2024, down from 17,100 at the end of 2023. Those are company-wide year-end figures, not the number laid off in February 2025. GeekWire also reported that about half of the workforce was in technology-related roles. The report provides that context, but it does not establish how the reported headcount change relates to the February announcement.

Which teams were impacted?
GeekWire reported that marketing and creative teams were affected, citing LinkedIn posts by workers. That team detail came from worker posts, not from Expedia’s public statement. Expedia’s stated rationale mentioned refining marketing strategies, but did not identify specific affected teams or roles.
How the later 2026 workforce reports differ
Several later reports describe separate workforce actions. Their dates, scope and status should not be combined with the undisclosed February 2025 layoffs.
