Exostar said the deployment was intended for a customer’s partner community of nearly 50,000 people worldwide, although the customer was not identified.
What Exostar announced
The announcement, published September 11, 2013, targeted organizations managing large or geographically dispersed employee, partner and third-party communities. Exostar presented remote proofing as a way to simplify vetting and credentialing, reduce the cost of authenticating remote users, support organizational growth and encourage stronger authentication.
Those benefits were Exostar’s stated rationale, not independently measured results. The release did not include an outcome study, performance benchmark or independent validation of the claimed savings.
The two identity-proofing methods
| Route | How it worked in the 2013 description | What it was intended to do |
|---|---|---|
| Online knowledge-based verification | An applicant answered questions generated from credit-related information held by Experian through its Precise ID platform. | Allow remote applicants to complete identity vetting without an agent session. |
| Live video-based verification | An applicant completed a verification session with a live agent over video. | Provide an assisted alternative when an online knowledge-based route was unsuitable or unsuccessful. |
The launch release did not set out universal geographic limits, appointment hours, attempt limits or turnaround times for either method. Details published later for a specific customer must not be treated as rules for every Exostar deployment.

The deployment Exostar identified
Exostar said it was deploying the remote option to validate identities and issue credentials for a customer whose partner community numbered nearly 50,000 people worldwide. The announcement did not name that customer, explain how many people had completed proofing or independently verify the population figure. “Nearly 50,000” is therefore a company-reported deployment scale, not a measured result.
Assurance language in the 2013 release
Exostar’s 2013 announcement said Experian Precise ID had Federal Identity, Credential, and Access Management (FICAM) recognition at Assurance Level 3. It also said Exostar’s identity and access-management suite aligned with NIST assurance levels 1 through 4 and that its identity-proofing portfolio met NIST Level 2 through Level 4 requirements.
These statements describe claims made in that historical release. They should not be read as current certification claims for a later Exostar product or service without separate, up-to-date documentation.

What later Exostar materials add
ProviderPass and healthcare use
Exostar’s later ProviderPass materials describe self-service remote proofing and live-agent webcam sessions in an electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) service for electronic health-record and electronic medical-record vendors. That service combines identity assurance with two-factor authentication and public-key-infrastructure digital signatures. It is a later healthcare example, not evidence that the 2013 launch was limited to healthcare or EPCS.

Customer-specific workflow published for SAIC
Later SAIC guidance provides a more detailed example of how Exostar’s services could operate:

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Experian self-service proofing was limited to U.S. applicants and required a passport or driver’s license.
- Depending on the result, an applicant could pass, receive an activation code by postal mail after additional processing or be routed to live video proofing.
- For live proofing, the applicant presented valid government-issued photo identification to an Exostar agent through a webcam or smartphone.
A separate SAIC service page listed the Experian knowledge-based route as available to U.S. applicants 24 hours a day, taking approximately 5–10 minutes and allowing three attempts. It listed webcam proofing as available worldwide 12 hours a day, five days a week, with approximately 70 appointments per day, typically on the next day, and a two-attempt maximum. Those figures are customer-specific service-page statements, not universal Exostar guarantees.
2024 availability update
Exostar’s January 15, 2024 update listing said the company had expanded on-demand remote identity-proofing availability to provide more flexibility. The listing did not provide the full announcement or quantify the expansion, so its scope cannot be stated more precisely.
Do not confuse the launch with Experian’s later CrossCore announcement
Experian’s February 2019 announcement concerned a separate CrossCore document-verification solution. Experian said Kantara recognized that solution as conformant with NIST SP 800-63-3 Identity Assurance Level 2. The described system integrated Acuant AssureID and Precise ID and used photo-based government identification, machine learning and facial recognition.

That later CrossCore description should not be conflated with the 2013 Exostar announcement or used as proof of the exact 2013 offering’s current status.
Why the announcement mattered for distributed business communities
Remote identity proofing addresses a practical onboarding problem: an organization may need to issue credentials to people who are not near an office or registration desk. The online route emphasizes speed and self-service when an applicant can answer credit-history questions. Live video adds an agent and visual document review, which can provide an assisted path when automated questioning does not resolve an identity.
In the 2013 announcement, Exostar and Experian framed the approach for highly regulated and geographically dispersed communities, including sectors such as aerospace and defense and life sciences. Those statements represent the companies’ positioning, not an independent assessment of effectiveness.
