In iSeeCars’ 2026 U.S. study, the Nissan LEAF had the highest average five-year depreciation among the listed EVs at 63.1%, while the Tesla Model 3 had the lowest at 54.6%. The EV average was 57.2%. These are market-study averages—not predictions of what a particular owner will get when selling.
How the EVs rank by five-year depreciation
The ranking below reports each model’s average percentage depreciation and average difference from its original MSRP. iSeeCars analyzed more than 950,000 five-year-old used cars sold from March 2025 through February 2026. The figures describe the U.S. market in that study period.
| Rank | EV model | Average five-year depreciation | Average difference from MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tesla Model 3 | 54.6% | $20,213 |
| 2 | Porsche Taycan | 54.7% | $54,403 |
| 3 | Hyundai Kona Electric | 56.5% | $18,581 |
| — | EV average | 57.2% | $28,435 |
| 4 | Kia Niro EV | 57.3% | $22,742 |
| 5 | Tesla Model Y | 57.8% | $26,020 |

What the percentages and dollar differences mean
iSeeCars calculates five-year depreciation by comparing a new vehicle’s MSRP with the price of an equivalent five-year-old used model. Its value-retention analysis uses statistical methods and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data to adjust for inflation. The percentage is the share of the original MSRP lost on average; the dollar figure is the corresponding average difference from MSRP in the study.

Those measures answer different questions. The LEAF has the highest percentage depreciation in this list, but its average dollar difference is $17,743. The Porsche Taycan’s percentage is lower, yet its average dollar difference is $54,403. A smaller percentage loss on a more expensive vehicle can still mean more dollars lost.
How EV depreciation compares with other vehicle types
In the same 2026 iSeeCars study, the EV segment’s average five-year depreciation was higher than the averages for all vehicles, hybrids, and trucks.

| Vehicle segment | Average five-year depreciation | Study |
|---|---|---|
| EVs | 57.2% | iSeeCars, 2026 |
| All vehicles | 41.8% | iSeeCars, 2026 |
| Hybrids | 35.4% | iSeeCars, 2026 |
| Trucks | 34.2% | iSeeCars, 2026 |
For comparison, iSeeCars reported average depreciation of 58.8% for EVs and 45.6% for all vehicles in its preceding comparison year. Its 2026 study says every major vehicle type retained more value than in 2025, while the improvement for EVs was small. Segment averages do not explain why any specific model landed where it did.
Why these figures are not a resale quote
The ranking summarizes average market prices for five-year-old vehicles; it does not estimate an individual car’s trade-in or private-sale value. It also covers the U.S. market and should not be treated as a global ranking. A specific vehicle’s eventual sale price is not established by these model averages.

The International Energy Agency provides broader regional context, but its retention chart uses a different measure: resale price relative to original purchase price. Its annual chart uses the final month of each year because monthly sales volumes are not available for all markets, and the figures could not be adjusted for the average age of vehicles sold. The IEA’s U.S. 2025 figure is an estimate due to data availability, so it should not be substituted for the iSeeCars model-by-model figures.

What international resale trends add
The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 reports that used-electric-car sales across China, five European markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom), and the United States exceeded 3 million in 2025, about 35% higher than in 2024. It also reports that BEV value retention across the five European markets fell from about 50% in 2022 to 35% in 2025. In the United States, BEV resale values ended 2025 roughly 25 percentage points below the overall market, according to the report.
These are regional market indicators, not model-level depreciation rates directly comparable with the iSeeCars table. The IEA describes U.S. resale values as volatile and notes that Tesla’s 2023 new-car price cuts rapidly eroded used-EV pricing; that context is not proof of the cause of any individual model’s iSeeCars result.

How to use the ranking when budgeting
- Use the percentage to compare the study’s average share of MSRP lost; use the dollar difference to see the average cash gap from MSRP.
- Keep the geography and period attached to the comparison: this model ranking is based on U.S. vehicles sold from March 2025 through February 2026.
- Treat the results as historical market averages, not a guaranteed resale value or a forecast for a particular car.
- For a purchase decision, compare the specific vehicle and local market rather than assuming the model-wide average describes every example.
iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer attributed used-EV pricing pressure to high upfront costs, saying: “Electric vehicles consistently cost more than the equivalent gasoline or hybrid model,” said Brauer. “That high upfront cost comes back to haunt electric cars on the used market, where buyers aren’t willing to pay the premium.” This is Brauer’s interpretation of the market, not a finding that establishes the cause of every transaction.
