Everything You Need to Know About Kilo Silver Bars

A kilo silver bar weighs 1,000 grams, but it is not an LBMA Good Delivery bar just because it is .999 fine or made by a listed refiner. Understand the distinction and the checks to make before buying.

A kilo silver bar contains 1,000 grams of silver; a bar marked .999 fine contains 999 parts silver per 1,000. But a retail kilo bar is not the same product as an LBMA Good Delivery silver bar: the London-market standard is roughly 1,000 troy ounces, far heavier than one kilogram. Fineness alone does not make a bar Good Delivery.

What is a kilo silver bar?

A kilo silver bar is a bar with a stated weight of one kilogram, or 1,000 grams. For a concrete retail example, The Royal Mint describes its 1kg Silver Bar Cast as containing 1,000 g of .999 fine silver. Product details and availability can change, so check the current product page before buying.

What does .999 silver mean?

Fineness expresses the proportion of precious metal in an alloy in parts per thousand. A .999 silver bar is 999 parts silver per 1,000, or 99.9% silver by fineness. The stated weight and fineness describe different things: the first is the bar’s mass, while the second is the share of that mass that is silver.

LBMA’s minimum acceptable fineness for its Good Delivery silver bars is also 999 parts per thousand. That shared fineness does not make a retail kilo bar an LBMA Good Delivery bar.

How does a retail kilo bar differ from an LBMA Good Delivery bar?

LBMA Good Delivery is a wholesale London-market standard, not a general approval label for every bar made by a listed refiner. LBMA says only bars meeting its Good Delivery standards are acceptable for settlement of a Loco London contract, in which bullion traded is physically held in London.

Feature Retail kilo silver bar LBMA Good Delivery silver bar
Weight 1 kg (1,000 g), as stated for The Royal Mint’s retail cast-bar example. For bars produced from 1 January 2025, the current rule specifies 1,000 troy ounces with a ±10% tolerance. Certain bars made under earlier weight ranges remain acceptable under LBMA transition provisions.
Fineness Depends on the product; The Royal Mint example states .999 fine. At least 999 parts per thousand silver under LBMA rules.
Market purpose A retail bullion product; the named product page identifies it as a cast bar. A bar meeting the standard for Loco London settlement.
LBMA status Not established by its kilo weight, .999 fineness, or the refiner’s listing alone. Applies when the bar meets the relevant Good Delivery standard.

A troy ounce is a different unit from the ordinary ounce: 1,000 troy ounces is much heavier than 1,000 grams. So a kilo bar does not become a Good Delivery bar simply because it has the same .999 fineness or was made by a refiner on the Good Delivery List. LBMA’s rules concern bars in its wholesale standard, not every retail bar produced by listed refiners.

What markings should you expect?

For Good Delivery bars produced from January 2019, LBMA’s marking rules include the refiner stamp, assay mark, fineness, serial number, and month and year of manufacture. Those are LBMA requirements for bars within that standard—not a universal marking checklist for all retail kilo bars. A retail product may have its own markings and documentation; check the seller’s product information rather than using the LBMA list as a pass-or-fail test.

What should you check before buying?

  • Confirm the exact product specifications. Check its declared gross weight, unit, fineness, and whether the bar is cast or minted.
  • Identify the maker and seller. Review the brand or refiner, the seller’s product description, and any assay information or documentation supplied.
  • Ask how authenticity concerns are handled. The sources cited here do not establish a universal at-home test. Do not rely on appearance or a serial number alone as proof; ask the seller about its verification and return procedures.
  • Compare the full purchase and resale terms. Dealer prices can vary by bar size and fineness. Compare the total price with the applicable silver benchmark at the time, and check the seller’s buyback terms. No current kilo-bar premium or dealer ranking is established here.
  • Check tax rules for your location. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction; there is no single rule that applies everywhere.

How is silver quoted by the ounce?

LBMA explains that the silver ounce convention refers to material containing at least 999 parts per thousand silver. Because a kilo bar is priced and sold as a specific product, its dealer price may differ according to size and fineness. The available product and standards information does not establish a current kilo-bar price or premium; use a current quote and compare it with the relevant silver benchmark when considering a purchase.
