Craig Conover and Austen Kroll’s Charleston restaurant is By The Way, a neighborhood restaurant and bar they developed with Uptown Hospitality Group. It opened to the public on December 12, 2024, at 45 1/2 Spring Street. The venue describes its approach as comforting American food, cocktails and other drinks in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

What is By The Way?

By The Way is a restaurant and bar associated with Southern Charm cast members Craig Conover and Austen Kroll, in partnership with Uptown Hospitality Group. The venue describes itself as a neighborhood gathering place, rather than presenting itself as a formal, occasion-only restaurant. Its stated food focus is classic, comforting American fare, alongside a bar program that includes cocktails, martinis, wine, beer and seasonal zero-proof drinks. By The Way’s story page

The partners initially announced the project in January 2024 as a neighborhood tavern planned for King Street. That was an early description, not the final address: the restaurant opened at 45 1/2 Spring Street. Bravo’s January 2024 announcement and its September 2024 pre-opening update document the change in location details as the project developed.

Where is it, and when did it open?

By The Way is at 45 1/2 Spring Street in Charleston, near King Street in the Cannonborough/Elliotborough area. Charleston City Paper reported that it opened to the public on December 12, 2024, following a VIP soft opening the previous day. Charleston City Paper’s opening report

Eater Carolinas described the opening-era venue as an evening and late-night lounge and reported about 80 seats. Those are details from its December 20, 2024 coverage, not a guarantee of current seating, hours or service format. Eater Carolinas’ report

What is the atmosphere like?

The owners’ stated ambition was a relaxed neighborhood tavern where people could linger over food and drinks. The interior, developed in collaboration with Brooklyn-based Home Studios, includes plush booths and banquette seating, a skylight, bespoke lighting, natural materials, custom plasterwork and a hand-painted mural. These design details give the room a polished lounge character while supporting the more casual neighborhood-bar concept. The venue’s description of its story and design

What kind of food and drinks has it served?

Opening-era coverage described an American tavern menu with dishes including fried oysters and caviar, ’nduja deviled eggs, steak frites, a duck confit sandwich, burgers and wings. In a December 2024 interview, Kroll highlighted a truffle deviled egg and the duck confit sandwich. These are examples reported around the opening, not confirmation that each item remains on the menu. Bravo’s opening interview and Eater Carolinas’ menu coverage

The official description also lists cocktails, martinis, wine, beer and seasonal zero-proof drinks. For current dishes, drinks, hours or reservations, use the restaurant’s live menu and location information rather than relying on opening coverage; the venue’s site provides sections for menus, location and hours, and reservations. What is known about the partnership?

Conover and Kroll developed By The Way with Uptown Hospitality Group. The sources establish their association with the venture but do not specify equity percentages or the legal ownership structure, so it is not possible to say from this information what share either cast member owns. At the opening, Uptown partner Keith Benjamin described the partnership as a fit with the people Conover and Kroll had become; that is his view, not evidence of the restaurant’s financial performance or customer reception.
