The Friedkin Group ended its talks in July; John Textor later pursued a bid that depended on selling his stake in Crystal Palace. The available reports do not establish Everton’s ownership or sale status on 8 October 2026.
What “exclusivity” meant in Everton’s sale process
Exclusivity refers to a period in which a club negotiates with a particular prospective buyer rather than pursuing competing sale talks. In the 2024 reporting, exclusivity changed hands over time. The phrase “three serious bidders” should not be read as proof that three named buyers held exclusive negotiating rights at once.
BBC Sport reported in July 2024 that the Friedkin Group was the fourth party to have received exclusivity without completing a takeover, following 777 Partners, Maciek Kaminski, and MSP Sports Capital. The same report described other interest in Everton, including a consortium led by former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone, an international consortium that reportedly offered £400 million and included a member of the Saudi royal family, and a UK investment firm backed by two western billionaires. It did not say these parties held exclusivity concurrently. BBC Sport’s July 2024 account
Why the Friedkin Group ended talks
Everton and the Friedkin Group ended takeover talks on 19 July 2024 after failing to finalise an agreement. The group had agreed a deal in principle in June and had received exclusivity after 777 Partners’ proposed sale collapsed.

BBC Sport identified uncertainty about 777’s loans to Everton and US legal action involving 777 as major concerns. It reported that 777 had loaned Everton £200 million during its takeover attempt. The Friedkin Group had injected £200 million into Everton and paid off a £158 million loan from MSP Sports Capital and local businessmen; it was to remain a lender after the talks ended. These are figures and arrangements reported in July 2024, not evidence of current financing.
Why John Textor’s proposal depended on Crystal Palace
After the Friedkin Group withdrew, The Guardian reported on 9 August 2024 that John Textor had made a new bid for Everton. Textor’s reported approximately 45% holding in Crystal Palace was a central obstacle: he would need to sell it to acquire Everton, because the clubs’ ownership situation prevented him from simply holding both interests.

The Guardian said three other investors were believed to be interested in buying Textor’s Palace shares, including an investor from the Middle East and a US group described as backed by sports celebrities. Those were reported prospects for buying his Crystal Palace stake, not three additional direct bids for Everton. The Guardian’s August 2024 report
What the later reports said about Textor’s bid
In September 2024, Sky Sports described Textor as having an exclusivity agreement with a 30 November deadline. It said completion depended on selling his Crystal Palace stake. In a Sky Sports interview published on 12 September, Textor said: “If someone asks you if you want to become the owner of Everton, it’s like someone asking you if you want to be President of the United States. Of course you do.” Sky Sports interview and report

The Guardian separately reported that Textor had received two serious offers for his Palace shares and put the reported value of his Everton proposal at £600 million. | Party or reported interest | What was reported | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| The Friedkin Group | Had exclusivity after 777’s proposed sale collapsed; talks ended in July 2024 without a completed takeover. | A completed purchase or current ownership position. |
| Earlier exclusivity recipients | BBC Sport listed 777 Partners, Maciek Kaminski, and MSP Sports Capital before the Friedkin Group. | That all four parties negotiated exclusively at the same time. |
| John Textor | Made a new bid after the Friedkin Group withdrew; September reports described an exclusivity agreement ending 30 November 2024. | That the proposed purchase completed. It depended on selling his reported Crystal Palace stake. |
| Investors interested in Textor’s Palace shares | Three investors were reported as interested in August; in September, The Guardian reported two serious offers. | That these were direct Everton bids or that the two reports describe the same number of active offers at the same moment. |
BBC Sport’s reported £200 million figure for 777’s Everton loans and £158 million for the MSP loan paid off by the Friedkin Group relate to the 2024 negotiations. The Guardian’s approximately 45% figure concerns Textor’s reported Palace holding, while its £600 million figure was the reported value of his Everton proposal. These amounts describe different parts of the transaction story and are not directly comparable bid terms.

What the 2024 reporting can—and cannot—tell you now
The reports establish a sequence: failed exclusive talks with earlier parties, the Friedkin Group’s withdrawal, and Textor’s subsequent proposal, constrained by his Crystal Palace ownership. They do not provide full, comparable terms for every interested party, support a ranking of bidders by financial strength or likelihood of completion, or establish Everton’s ownership and sale status on 8 October 2026. Any present-day claim would need current authoritative reporting.
