German and Swiss authorities seized more than €25 million in Bitcoin—roughly $29 million at the conversion used in headlines—during a late-November 2025 operation against Cryptomixer, a Bitcoin mixing service. Europol said the service had handled more than €1.3 billion in Bitcoin since 2016; that is an estimate of historical transaction volume, not the amount seized.
What happened in the Cryptomixer takedown?
During Operation Olympia, authorities carried out enforcement action in Zurich, Switzerland, from November 24 to 28, 2025. The operation targeted Cryptomixer, which Europol described as operating on both the clear web and dark web. Europol announced the takedown on December 1.
According to Europol’s announcement, authorities seized three servers in Switzerland, the cryptomixer.io domain, more than 12 terabytes of data, and more than €25 million in Bitcoin. The website displayed a law-enforcement seizure banner.
What does a Bitcoin mixer do?
A mixer, sometimes called a tumbler, pools Bitcoin deposited by different users and later sends Bitcoin to destination addresses at randomized times. The service’s purpose is to make it harder to associate a particular deposit with a particular withdrawal.

Mixing does not erase Bitcoin transactions from the public blockchain or make coins literally untraceable. It adds complexity to transaction analysis; investigators may also use timing, amounts, address activity, exchange records, and other information to assess links. A service’s privacy function alone does not establish that every user or transaction is criminal.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How much was seized, and how much passed through the service?
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| More than €25 million in Bitcoin | Cryptocurrency authorities reported seizing during Operation Olympia. The announcement does not provide a precise coin count, valuation time, or exchange-rate method. |
| More than €1.3 billion in Bitcoin | Europol’s estimate of Bitcoin mixed through Cryptomixer since it began operating in 2016. This is historical throughput, not assets seized, profit, or proof that all funds were illicit. |
| About $29 million | An approximate U.S.-dollar conversion used in headlines; Europol’s reported seizure figure is in euros. |
The distinction matters: the €1.3 billion figure describes activity over years, while the €25 million-plus figure refers to cryptocurrency seized in the operation. Neither number, by itself, establishes the criminal origin of every Bitcoin involved.
Why did authorities target Cryptomixer?
Europol said investigators believed the service helped obscure proceeds linked to ransomware, drug and weapons trafficking, payment-card fraud, underground criminal forums, and dark-web markets. Those are law-enforcement characterizations of alleged use, not a court finding against every customer or transaction.

Mixing services can be used to seek financial privacy, but authorities may focus on a particular service when they believe it is facilitating the movement of criminal proceeds. The technical function of pooling and redistributing funds is distinct from the legal assessment of how a service was operated or used.

Europol said it supported coordination, intelligence exchange, operational meetings, and on-site forensic work. The operation illustrates the cross-border cooperation needed when a service, its infrastructure, and its users may span jurisdictions.
What is not known from the public announcement?
Europol’s release confirms seizures but does not say whether arrests were made, name suspects or operators, identify Bitcoin addresses, or explain the contents of the seized data. It also does not describe the legal status or eventual disposition of the Bitcoin—such as whether it was frozen, transferred, or subject to forfeiture proceedings—or provide details about liquidation or return of funds.

The seized data could support further investigations, but the announcement does not establish what it contains or whether investigators have identified individual users. A seizure of infrastructure or assets is not, by itself, proof of guilt or a final judicial ruling.

Why the operation matters—and what it does not prove
Cryptomixer was an enabling service that could be used by many different actors, rather than a single criminal group. Taking control of its servers and domain removed that service’s infrastructure and gave investigators a substantial dataset to examine. Europol also cited its earlier support for the March 2023 takedown of ChipMixer, placing the operation in a continuing effort to disrupt services authorities view as facilitating illicit finance.

A takedown can disrupt one route for moving funds and generate investigative leads; it does not establish that cryptocurrency mixing has ended. Users may turn to other services or methods, and the Cryptomixer announcement does not say that all associated wallets have been identified or frozen. Nor does the operation show that all Bitcoin users, privacy tools, or mixer customers are engaged in crime.
