On July 9, 2024, it reorganized its Creativity Standards around four labels—Made by a seller, Designed by a seller, Handpicked by a seller and Sourced by a seller. Qualifying handmade and vintage listings remain allowed, while ordinary resale and dropshipping remain prohibited.
The change is Etsy’s attempt to describe a wider range of creator businesses without looking like a generic marketplace. Whether clearer labels can prevent mass-produced goods from overwhelming the site is still the unresolved question.
What changed on Etsy?
Etsy’s announcement on July 9, 2024 replaced the old, simple “handmade” and “vintage” mental model with labels that explain the seller’s role in an item. The current framework is set out in Etsy’s Creativity Standards.

Are handmade and vintage products still permitted?
Yes. Handmade physical products remain eligible, and vintage products remain eligible when they meet Etsy’s rules. Vintage generally means an item, brand or material that is at least 20 years old. Etsy says qualifying listings can still display vintage designations even though their broader seller-role category is “Handpicked by a seller.”
- A newly manufactured lamp styled like a 1970s lamp is not vintage.
- A modern reproduction of an old poster is not vintage merely because the original design is old.
- A seller’s newly made lamp with a retro aesthetic is “Made by a seller,” not vintage.
- A genuinely old lamp selected and described by a dealer can be “Handpicked by a seller” and vintage.
Commercially manufactured goods do not become handmade because a shop adds a sticker, changes the packaging or makes another superficial alteration. Etsy’s removal guidance also continues to prohibit ordinary resale and dropshipping, with limited exceptions for permitted supplies, personalization, handpicked goods and other categories. Why Etsy changed the language
Etsy says the new labels make its rules clearer, show the human contribution behind a listing and explain why an item belongs on Etsy. CEO Josh Silverman framed the change as a way to emphasize human creativity rather than describe every permitted product as simply handmade. The policy also reflects how creator businesses operate now. An illustrator may design products that a production partner prints. A digital creator may sell downloads. A maker may use computerized tools or 3D printing. A vintage dealer may curate rather than manufacture. Craft-supply merchants provide materials for buyers’ own projects. A single “handmade” label did not describe all of those activities accurately.
At the same time, Etsy faces attention and trust competition from Amazon’s scale and logistics and Temu’s aggressive pricing and mass-produced inventory. Etsy is not matching those services in a pure price race. Its strategic challenge is to win shopping attention while preserving a reason to choose independent creators, original designs and curated goods over commodity marketplaces.
Does “designed by a seller” allow factory-made products?
It can allow a production-partner arrangement, but not arbitrary factory inventory. A seller must create the original design and disclose the production partner where required. The finished product may be manufactured elsewhere, so it is not physically handmade by the shop owner; its eligibility comes from the seller’s design contribution.

Examples that can fit the design-led category
- An original pattern printed on shirts by a disclosed partner.
- A seller’s own digital artwork produced as stationery or home decor.
- An original model manufactured by a partner after the seller designs it.
Examples that remain risky or prohibited
- A wholesale product listed as handmade because the seller repackages it.
- A purchased blank with only a trivial change.
- A downloaded or copied design presented as the seller’s own.
- A commercial product made to look vintage but less than 20 years old.
Personalization does not automatically convert a commercial product into handmade. A buyer’s name or image may support a permitted personalized listing in the right circumstances, but superficial customization is not a blanket exception.
Where the policy is tighter—and where it is broader
The standards are tighter in wording because they identify the seller’s required contribution and explicitly list removable inventory. Etsy’s guidance addresses ordinary resale, dropshipping, falsely described vintage goods, superficial modifications, craft supplies that do not enable buyer creativity and AI prompt bundles sold by themselves. The permitted universe is also broader than a strict physical-handmade definition. It includes original designs made by production partners, digital products, qualifying computerized workflows, curated vintage, and craft or party supplies. “Sourced by a seller” is not permission to list any wholesale merchandise: supplies must generally be tools or materials whose primary purpose is helping the buyer create something new.

Can the new labels solve Etsy’s Temu and Amazon problem?
Not by themselves. The labels give Etsy a clearer policy basis, but public policy documents do not establish that every listing is compliant or that enforcement is perfectly consistent. Etsy’s own help material says compliant listings can sometimes be removed in error and that an appeals feature is being rolled out gradually.
That leaves three separate questions:
- What is prohibited? Misrepresented mass-produced goods, ordinary resale and other listed violations remain prohibited.
- What is permitted? Certain seller-designed products made by production partners, qualifying vintage, digital goods and eligible supplies can be allowed.
- Can Etsy distinguish them at marketplace scale? The available policy pages do not prove that enforcement is complete or error-free.
An identical-looking listing on Temu is a warning sign, not conclusive proof of an Etsy violation. Both sellers may use the same supplier, a Temu seller may have copied an Etsy creator’s design or photograph, or the Etsy shop may actually be reselling the factory item. Evidence matters more than appearance alone.
How shoppers can evaluate an Etsy listing
- Read the seller-role label. “Designed by” does not mean the seller physically made the item; “Handpicked” is not synonymous with new vintage-style merchandise.
- Check the shop’s About section. Look for process photographs, materials, equipment and a description consistent with the listing.
- Look for production-partner disclosures. A disclosed partner can be legitimate when the seller created the original design.
- Inspect the images. Generic, duplicated or inconsistent photography is a clue, not definitive proof. Reverse-image search can reveal reuse, but a copycat may have stolen the Etsy seller’s photographs.
- Compare the practical details. Check dimensions, materials, processing time, shipping origin, returns and whether the price makes sense for the claimed process.
- For vintage, ask specific questions. Request approximate age, provenance, maker marks, condition, restoration and replacement parts.
- Report suspected violations through Etsy. Do not treat a suspicion as proof or publicly accuse a seller without evidence.
What sellers should do under the four-category system
Classify every listing accurately
- Use “Made by a seller” when the shop physically makes the product.
- Use “Designed by a seller” when the shop created the original design and a disclosed partner produces it.
- Use “Handpicked by a seller” for personally selected eligible goods, especially qualifying vintage.
- Use “Sourced by a seller” only for permitted supplies or qualifying sourced and personalized goods.
Keep documentation
- Original sketches, design files and dated production records.
- Production-partner names and agreements.
- Supplier invoices and material specifications.
- Vintage acquisition records, provenance and restoration notes.
- Process photographs showing tools, materials and work in progress.
Avoid common enforcement risks
- Do not copy another seller’s photographs or designs.
- Do not call a factory product handmade because the shop packages it.
- Do not describe a modern reproduction as vintage.
- Do not use minimal personalization to disguise commercial inventory.
- Do not assume a supplier’s “handmade” claim satisfies Etsy’s standards.
Etsy may remove a listing, and an appeal may not be available for every violation or seller while the rollout remains gradual.

Etsy versus Amazon Handmade
Amazon Handmade keeps a more explicit Handmade program inside Amazon’s much broader marketplace. Applicants must apply for approval. Amazon’s U.S. program page says the Professional selling plan is listed at $39.99 per month plus selling fees, with the monthly fee waived after the first month for approved Handmade sellers; Amazon describes that waiver as a potential $480 annual saving. Neither platform is automatically better. Etsy may suit a seller whose advantage is originality, curation or a creative community; Amazon may suit one prioritizing reach and logistics while meeting Handmade’s requirements.
Bottom line: a clearer promise that still needs credible enforcement
Etsy’s 2024 change was a taxonomy shift, not the abolition of handmade or vintage. The four labels acknowledge modern creator businesses while preserving rules against ordinary resale and misleading descriptions. The policy strengthens Etsy’s differentiation only if shoppers can trust the labels and Etsy can enforce the underlying standards fairly. For now, treat the categories as useful context—not a substitute for checking how an item was designed, made, selected or sourced.
