You can start an Etsy shop by confirming your product meets Etsy’s rules, checking local costs and legal obligations, setting up your account in a desktop browser, and publishing a clear first listing. Profit is not guaranteed: fees, materials, labor, shipping, taxes, and customer service all affect whether a product is worth selling.
What can you sell on Etsy?
Etsy groups eligible products into four seller roles: made by you, designed by you, handpicked by you, or sourced by you. Examples include handmade or hand-assembled goods; your own designs sold as digital downloads or made with a disclosed production partner; vintage goods that are at least 20 years old; curated items; and craft or party supplies whose primary purpose is helping buyers create or celebrate. The category alone does not establish eligibility: review Etsy’s shop-opening guidance, Creativity Standards, Prohibited Items Policy, and seller policies before investing in materials or inventory.
Choose a format that fits your capacity, not just the product idea. Physical goods require materials, packaging, and delivery; digital downloads avoid shipping but still need accurate previews and buyer support. Made-to-order work can reduce unsold inventory, but it requires realistic processing times. A production partner can make a seller-designed item, but the design must be yours and the partner disclosed as Etsy requires.
Check access, legal obligations, and startup costs
Before opening, confirm Etsy Payments is available where you live and check the laws that apply to your product and business. Etsy says it does not require sellers to have a business license to sell on the platform, but that does not exempt a seller from local, regional, or national requirements. Permits, tax registration, product rules, labels, and warnings can depend on both jurisdiction and product; Etsy’s Seller Policy puts responsibility for applicable legal compliance on the seller.

Etsy may show a one-time shop setup fee during onboarding. Its Help article describes that fee as one-time and non-refundable, but the amount is not a universal published quote; check the amount presented for your location before completing setup. Also budget for listing and transaction fees, payment processing, shipping, packaging, production inputs, and any applicable taxes. Etsy Payments availability and fee details vary by country.
How to open your Etsy shop
Etsy’s current setup guide says shop creation must be completed in a desktop web browser, and a first listing is required before the shop can open. Work through the setup in this order:
- Create or sign in to an Etsy account. Use a desktop browser to begin shop setup.
- Choose shop preferences. Select the shop language, country, and currency. Etsy says the shop language cannot be changed later, so choose the language you can use to communicate with customers.
- Pick a shop name. It must be 4–20 characters, with no spaces or special characters. It must be unused, avoid profanity, and not infringe a trademark.
- Set up payments and billing. Enter the requested bank or payment details and a billing card, then complete identity verification.
- Prepare the storefront. Fill in the shop sections and policies so buyers can understand what you sell and how orders work.
- Add the first listing. Complete the product details, pricing, processing time, delivery information, and photos. Etsy says this listing must be added before the shop can open.
Etsy’s official shop-opening guide provides the current onboarding screens and requirements.
Build a listing that answers a buyer’s questions
A useful listing makes the offer easy to understand before a shopper contacts you. Use an accurate title and search-relevant tags, add clear high-quality photos, and describe what the buyer will receive. Specify dimensions, materials, format, personalization options, variations, and any other details that could affect the purchase. Do not use images or claims you cannot substantiate.
- For physical items: state available variations, processing time, shipping method, and any relevant care or safety information.
- For digital items: say clearly that the product is a download, explain the file format and contents, and show representative previews.
- For made-to-order work: explain what can be customized and set a processing time you can consistently meet.
Etsy directs sellers to its Search Visibility page and search guides for platform-specific advice. Search placement can change; no title, tag, or photo strategy guarantees a particular ranking or sale. Etsy’s Seller Handbook offers free articles for sellers who want more guidance.
How much does it cost to sell on Etsy?
Etsy’s US selling page lists the following headline charges. They are US examples, not a universal fee quote; check Etsy’s fee page for your bank country and account circumstances.
Rank #3
| Fee | US example or rule | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 per listing | A listing lasts four months or until it sells, whichever comes first. Renewal or multiple-quantity sales can create additional listing fees. |
| Transaction | 6.5% of the order sale price, including seller-set shipping | Apply it to the order components specified by Etsy, not just the item’s production cost. |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 in the US example | Rates vary by the seller’s bank country. |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% when listing and payment-account currencies differ | Applies when the currencies are different. |
| Offsite Ads | 15% for sellers below $10,000 in Etsy sales during the preceding 365 days; 12% at or above $10,000 | The fee is capped at $100 per order. Whether participation is optional depends on Etsy’s rules and the seller’s sales threshold. |
Other charges may include country-specific regulatory operating fees, taxes, optional advertising, shipping labels, and service fees. See Etsy’s US selling page and fees and taxes Help article for current details.
Price for margin, not just materials
Start with the amount a buyer pays, then subtract platform fees and every cost required to fulfill the order. Include materials, your production labor, packaging, postage or delivery costs, payment and transaction charges, expected replacements or refunds, and applicable taxes. If a price only covers materials, it is not evidence that the product is profitable.

A digital download has no parcel postage but still takes design time and may require support. A physical, made-to-order item ties up time after each sale; ready-to-ship stock shifts some effort and cost earlier. A production partner may change per-unit costs and fulfillment workload. Etsy’s cited pages do not establish typical beginner revenue, profit margins, sales timelines, or best-selling niches, so use your own cost assumptions and avoid treating platform presence as a demand forecast.

Plan fulfillment and customer service before launch
Etsy’s Seller Policy, whose current version took effect July 9, 2026, requires sellers to honor stated processing and shipping times, meet shop commitments, respond to messages in a timely manner, and work with buyers to resolve order problems. Set a processing time you can meet during busy periods, and decide how products will be packaged and dispatched before accepting orders.
Etsy says shipping labels can be purchased through the platform in a range of supported countries and with supported carriers. Buying labels through Etsy is an available option, not a requirement; a label printer is not a prerequisite for opening a shop. Choose a shipping workflow that is available in your location and fits your order volume.
What a new seller should—and should not—expect
Etsy’s 2025 Transparency Report, published in 2026, says listing removals for policy violations declined approximately 49% compared with 2024. That is a platform-wide year-over-year figure, not a forecast of a new shop’s experience or a measure of its chance of making sales. The report also describes how Etsy applies its Made by, Designed by, Handpicked by, and Sourced by classifications.

There is no supported earnings promise in Etsy’s setup and policy materials. Treat “turn your passion into profit” as a goal to test: confirm eligibility, calculate full costs, publish a buyer-ready listing, and track whether the price and workload make sense as orders arrive.
