Ethereum does not have one fixed inflation rate. ETH’s net issuance over a period is the ETH created minus the ETH burned or otherwise removed during that same period; its inflation rate expresses that net change as a percentage of a stated starting supply. The result changes with validator rewards, network activity, the measurement window and the accounting method.
What “inflation rate” and “net issuance” mean for ETH
In this context, inflation means a change in the supply of ETH—not a rise in the prices of goods and services. A percentage called “Ethereum’s inflation rate” is meaningful only when you know the time period and the supply used as its denominator. The Ethereum Foundation has also distinguished monetary inflation from price inflation in its historical explanation of Ethereum’s issuance model; that article is useful for the distinction, not as a description of today’s protocol rules.

- Total supply is the amount of ETH counted as existing at a particular time under a source’s accounting convention.
- Issuance is ETH created under protocol rules. In the post-Merge system, validator rewards are the principal source of new issuance.
- Burn is ETH removed from supply. The best-known example is the transaction base fee burned under EIP-1559.
- Net issuance is issuance minus burn and other supply removals over the same interval, using the same accounting convention.
Positive net issuance means the measured supply increased during the interval; negative net issuance means it decreased. A negative result for one interval does not establish that ETH will remain deflationary, just as a positive interval does not establish permanent inflation.
These terms describe different stages of the same accounting. Gross issuance counts what the protocol creates before subtracting destruction. Burn counts ETH removed under the categories a source tracks. Net issuance combines those flows over a matching interval. The distinction matters because a dashboard showing a positive issuance figure is not necessarily saying that total supply grew by that amount: it may not yet have deducted burn.

How to calculate an ETH net issuance rate
For a stated period, a simple rate calculation is:
Net issuance rate = (ETH issued − ETH burned or otherwise removed) ÷ ETH supply at the start of the period × 100.
The numerator and denominator must match the claim. For example, a percentage based on supply at the start of a measured month is a rate for that month; it is not automatically an annual rate. If a dashboard annualizes a shorter interval, its figure is a run-rate calculation based on that interval, not a guarantee of what supply will do over the next year. Staking participation can change issuance, while transaction demand affects burn.
Consider a purely illustrative calculation with no claim about current ETH values: if a chosen interval has issuance of A ETH and total burn and other removals of B ETH, net issuance is A minus B. If A is larger, supply rose under that accounting convention; if B is larger, supply fell. To express that net change as a percentage, divide the difference by the supply at the interval’s start. This simple example also shows why reporting only A—the issuance total—does not answer whether supply expanded or contracted.

It describes a conversion of an observed shorter-period rate into a yearly pace according to the dashboard’s method. It does not mean the same amount has already been issued or burned over a calendar year, and it cannot guarantee that the pace will continue. A short interval with unusually high or low transaction demand can produce a different implied annual pace from a longer interval. Always retain the interval and method that produced the annualized number.
When two sources show different “inflation rates,” first check whether they are actually measuring the same thing. One may report gross issuance before burns, while another reports net supply change; one may show a realized historical period, while another annualizes a shorter one. Their denominator, timestamps, included burn categories and treatment of withdrawals or chain reorganizations can also differ.
How Ethereum creates and burns ETH
Validator rewards create ETH
Ethereum completed its transition from proof of work to proof of stake in September 2022. After the Merge, execution-layer proof-of-work issuance ceased; validator issuance continued on the consensus layer. Consequently, historical descriptions of mining rewards do not describe the current source of newly issued ETH. The amount of validator issuance depends in part on staking participation.

This change affects gross issuance, not the definition of net issuance. Validator rewards add ETH, while burn subtracts ETH; the measured result still depends on both flows over a common period. A reference to “miners” may be appropriate when explaining pre-Merge figures, but it should not be used to describe post-Merge issuance as though proof-of-work mining were still creating ETH on Ethereum’s execution layer.

For transactions, EIP-1559 specifies a protocol-calculated base fee that adjusts with demand for block space. The base fee is burned. A transaction’s priority fee, by contrast, goes to the block producer. Thus, a transaction fee is not necessarily burned in full. When network activity raises the amount of base fee burned, burn can offset or exceed issuance for a period; when it does not, issuance can exceed burn. EIP-1559 describes these outcomes without promising a fixed ETH supply or a permanently deflationary rule. See the EIP-1559 specification.
The EIP-1559 specification states: “The base fee is always burned (i.e. it is destroyed by the protocol).” The distinction between base fee and priority fee is important when interpreting transaction costs: the portion burned contributes to supply reduction, while the priority fee is paid to the block producer and is not the base-fee burn described by the EIP.
Base-fee burn is not the only accounting category that can matter. Geth’s documented supply tracer distinguishes EIP-1559, blob and miscellaneous burns, among other fields. A metric that counts only base-fee burn may therefore differ from one that includes additional categories. The Geth live-tracing documentation also notes that its tracer does not handle chain reorganizations itself; downstream processing must account for them.
It is therefore useful to ask exactly what a source means by “burn.” It may be reporting the familiar EIP-1559 base-fee amount, or a broader total that includes other documented burn fields. Likewise, an issuance total may include validator withdrawals according to the tracer’s convention. Field labels and totals should be checked rather than assumed to be interchangeable across dashboards or data pipelines.

| Historical estimate | What Ethereum.org described | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Before the Merge | About 13,000 ETH per day issued to miners; about 4.61% annualized gross issuance in the page’s comparison, comprising about 4.09% execution-layer and 0.52% consensus-layer issuance | Illustrative estimates under the page’s historical assumptions, not a live or current rate |
| After the Merge, as illustrated | About 1,700 ETH per day to stakers, assuming about 14 million ETH staked | An assumption-dependent example, not a current daily issuance figure |
| Change in gross issuance | About an 88% reduction in gross new issuance after the Merge | A comparison of the page’s illustrative estimates; it does not mean supply fell by 88% |
| Illustrative burn offset | A rough average gas-price threshold of 16 gwei for burn to offset the page’s estimated daily issuance | A historical, assumption-dependent illustration, not a fixed break-even threshold for today |
| Supply at the Merge | About 120.52 million ETH | The page’s estimate for that historical point, not today’s total supply |
These figures help explain why the Merge mattered: it ended execution-layer proof-of-work issuance and reduced gross issuance in the historical comparison. But gross issuance is not net supply growth. To determine net change, burn and issuance must be measured over the same interval. Ethereum.org’s Merge issuance explainer provides the assumptions behind its historical comparison.
The historical 16 gwei illustration is especially easy to misread as a permanent break-even rule. It was tied to the page’s assumptions about issuance and burn, not a protocol setting that guarantees supply neutrality at that gas price. If issuance, staking participation or transaction conditions differ, the balance between created and burned ETH can differ too. The same caution applies to the estimated daily ETH totals and the historical annualized percentages in the table: they explain the scale of the change at the time, but they are not a substitute for a dated current reading.
How to read a live ETH supply dashboard
Ethereum.org’s ETH supply and issuance page, last updated June 6, 2026, directs readers to live supply and issuance data. A live figure is a dated snapshot: do not reuse it in evergreen material without preserving its “as of” time and calculation method. When reading a dashboard or comparing providers, check the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the metric. Confirm whether the value is gross issuance, burned ETH, net issuance or a percentage rate. A gross issuance figure does not subtract burn.
- Record the interval and timestamp. A daily, monthly or yearly realized change answers a different question from an annualized rate calculated from a shorter window.
- Check the denominator. For a percentage, find the supply baseline used. A rate without a stated or documented denominator is difficult to compare or reproduce.
- Inspect what counts as burn or removal. Determine whether the value includes only EIP-1559 base-fee burn or also blob-fee and other categories. Check how the source handles withdrawals and other protocol accounting.
- Note data handling. Reorg handling and the source’s accounting convention can affect totals. A tool’s field labels do not necessarily match another provider’s definitions.
- Keep the snapshot with the claim. Record the source, timestamp, interval and method alongside any figure you cite. If any of those are unavailable, qualify the comparison rather than presenting the number as a universal ETH rate.
Ethereum.org points readers to Ultrasound Money and Etherscan for live supply and issuance data. Those are digital references, not protocol guarantees: the displayed number should be treated as a measurement produced by that source’s definitions and data. No single stable “current inflation rate” follows from Ethereum’s rules, because issuance and burn change with staking participation, network activity and the interval being measured.
A useful comparison checklist is to line up the same six dimensions: gross issuance versus net issuance, realized interval versus annualized pace, exact time boundaries, denominator, burn categories and treatment of reorganizations and withdrawals. If one dashboard reports a percentage and another reports ETH per day, they are not directly comparable without converting them using stated assumptions. If one source includes blob-fee burn and another does not, their net figures can differ even when both are internally consistent.
How to reproduce a supply calculation
For independent analysis, Geth documents a full-sync supply-tracing workflow that records per-block issuance and burn fields. It is a technical route for readers working with a node client and chain data, rather than a simple dashboard lookup. To calculate a comparable rate from traced data:

- Choose an exact starting and ending point and define the interval. Use the same block or time boundaries for issuance and burn.
- Collect the relevant issuance and burn fields for that interval. Decide which documented categories belong in the calculation, and state that choice.
- Account for chain reorganizations in downstream processing; Geth says its tracer does not do this itself.
- Sum issuance and supply removals under the chosen convention, then subtract removals from issuance to find net issuance.
- Divide net issuance by the supply at the start of the interval and multiply by 100. Label the resulting percentage with the interval and denominator.
- If you annualize the result, label it as annualized from that selected interval. Do not describe it as a realized calendar-year change or a forecast.
For a reproducible result, keep the inputs together with the answer: the starting and ending points, the fields included, the supply baseline, the treatment of reorgs and withdrawals, and whether the reported value is realized or annualized. This makes it possible to distinguish a real disagreement about the supply accounting from a simple difference in measurement windows or definitions.

A proposal is not an activated protocol rule. EIP-8363, “Tapered Issuance Burn,” proposes deducting a staking-ratio-dependent fraction of validator rewards, with a described saturation point. Its projected effects depend on the proposal’s model. The proposal text alone does not establish that the mechanism has been adopted or activated, so it should not be included in present-day supply accounting as if it were already in force. See EIP-8363 for the proposal.
When reading projections associated with a proposal, keep their conditional status visible. A modeled curve or estimate describes what could follow if the proposal’s assumptions and rules applied; it is not evidence that the present ETH supply has already changed under that mechanism. For a current accounting claim, use activated protocol rules and a dated supply measurement.
Which ETH supply number should you use?
Use gross issuance when asking how much ETH protocol rules created, burn when asking how much was destroyed under the categories counted, and net issuance when asking whether supply rose or fell over a defined interval. Use a percentage only when the time window and starting-supply denominator are clear. There is no single stable current inflation rate: the result changes as staking and network activity change, and sources may apply different accounting conventions.
There is no physical product required to understand these metrics. Mining equipment relates to the pre-Merge issuance mechanism, not current execution-layer issuance. Validator equipment serves a different purpose—operating a validator—and hardware wallets relate to key security, not measuring supply. For supply figures, the relevant resources are live dashboards, explorers and, for technical independent analysis, node-client tracing tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ethereum’s inflation rate?
There is no single fixed ETH inflation rate. In a monetary-supply context, the rate is net supply change over a stated period divided by the supply at the start of that period. A useful figure therefore needs a time window, denominator and accounting method.

Is ETH inflationary or deflationary?
It can be either over a measured interval. Validator issuance adds ETH, while burns—especially EIP-1559 base-fee burn—remove it. Supply rises when issuance exceeds removals and falls when removals exceed issuance. Neither result guarantees the direction in a later interval.
What does net issuance mean?
Net issuance is ETH created minus ETH burned or otherwise removed during the same interval, using a consistent accounting convention. Positive net issuance means measured supply increased over that period; negative net issuance means it decreased.
Does EIP-1559 burn every transaction fee?
No. EIP-1559 burns the base fee. The priority fee goes to the block producer, so the full transaction fee is not necessarily burned.

Did the Merge make ETH permanently deflationary?
No. The Merge ended execution-layer proof-of-work issuance and reduced gross issuance in Ethereum.org’s historical comparison, but validator issuance continued. Whether supply rises or falls still depends on issuance and burn over the interval being measured.
Why do ETH inflation-rate dashboards show different numbers?
They may use different intervals, timestamps, supply denominators, annualization methods or burn categories. Some figures show gross issuance and others show net supply change. Data handling for withdrawals and chain reorganizations can also differ.
Are the Merge-era figures current ETH supply rates?
No. Ethereum.org’s figures—such as the approximately 1,700 ETH per day estimate under an assumption of about 14 million ETH staked, the roughly 88% gross-issuance reduction, and the 16 gwei illustrative burn threshold—are historical estimates tied to the page’s assumptions. They should not be presented as today’s readings.
Is EIP-8363 already changing ETH issuance?
The cited EIP-8363 text is a proposal for a tapered issuance burn. Proposal text and modeled effects do not by themselves show that a rule has been adopted or activated. Do not include it as an existing supply mechanism without confirmation of activation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can I verify a current ETH net issuance number?
Use a live source such as those linked from Ethereum.org’s ETH supply page, and record its timestamp, interval and method. For a technical reconstruction, Geth documents supply tracing, but its tracer does not handle chain reorganizations itself; downstream processing must do that.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: ETH’s inflation rate is not the same as gross issuance. Net issuance is issuance minus burn and other counted supply removals over a defined interval; a rate additionally requires a stated starting supply. Because validator rewards, network activity, time windows and accounting conventions vary, quote any rate with its source, timestamp, interval and method—and treat annualized figures as run rates, not guarantees.
