Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade was scheduled to activate on the Sepolia testnet on October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC. The Ethereum Foundation’s announcement set the activation at epoch 353,024, slot 11,296,768. That time has passed, but the announcement and technical sources cited here do not establish whether the network remained stable after activation or report measured performance results.
What the Sepolia launch means
Glamsterdam combines changes to Ethereum’s execution layer, called Amsterdam, and its consensus layer, called Gloas. Its headline features include enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs). The upgrade also includes gas-accounting and repricing changes, along with EVM and consensus updates tracked in EIP-7773.
The Ethereum Foundation described the scope plainly: “This announcement covers Sepolia; it does not schedule a mainnet upgrade.” The changes are designed with scaling and sustainability goals in mind; the Sepolia schedule alone is not evidence that users have already seen faster transactions or lower fees.
EIP-7773 is the live meta EIP for the fork and lists the included proposals. Among them are EIP-7732 for ePBS, EIP-7928 for block-level access lists, EIP-2780 for resource-based intrinsic transaction gas, EIP-7708 for logs on ETH transfers, EIP-7778 for block gas accounting without refunds, EIP-7843 for the SLOTNUM opcode, EIP-7954 for increased maximum contract size, EIP-7976 for calldata floor cost, EIP-7981 for access-list cost, and EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 for state-creation and state-access gas changes. This is a selection, not a substitute for the full, current list in the meta EIP.

Who needs to update Ethereum clients?
Sepolia node operators
Operators need versions of both their execution-layer and consensus-layer clients that explicitly support the Sepolia fork. Check the client release guidance for the exact compatible versions and configuration steps; compatibility cannot be inferred from updating only one layer.

Sepolia validators
Update the beacon node and validator client, then follow the relevant client instructions for proposer settings and any builder or validator-tool dependencies. The Foundation’s announcement notes that gas-limit configuration differs by client, so use current client release notes rather than assuming one setting applies to every setup.
Application and tooling developers
Review the included EIPs and test applications and tools on Sepolia. Pay particular attention to gas accounting and estimates, repricing, transfer logs, opcodes, and client interfaces, since assumptions in these areas may need adjustment.

Regular Ethereum users and ETH holders
The Sepolia announcement did not call for a user action and did not announce a mainnet activation. A testnet milestone is not, by itself, a change users must make to their mainnet wallets or holdings.
What developers should test
The Ethereum Foundation’s August 2026 repricing post says EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 change the costs of creating and accessing state. In its historical replay, the Foundation reported that a small set of contracts relied on assumptions affected by the new schedule; it said most flagged issues were addressed with gas-limit increases and that the large majority of contracts were unaffected. The post does not give a numeric count, and its replay result is not a guarantee for every application.

Earlier public guidance for the Platåberget testnet also warned about assumptions that can be affected by protocol changes. Developers should use current EIP and client guidance to decide whether these earlier testing notes apply to their code:
- Tools that rely on a hard-capped maximum gas limit may need updates.
- Do not assume every transfer costs exactly 21,000 gas.
- Check whether gas estimation assumes a single dimension; the guidance warned that this can be insufficient.
- Test behavior affected by state creation or access costs, gas refunds and accounting, transfer logs, and the new opcode or client interfaces relevant to the application.

What is—and is not—known about results
The cited official material establishes a Sepolia activation schedule and describes the upgrade’s intended changes. It does not provide a named, quantitative post-activation result for throughput, transaction-cost reductions, or stability. Treat claims about actual performance gains or a confirmed mainnet date as unestablished by these sources.
