Ethereum’s 2024 Roadmap Update: What Dencun Changed and What It Signifies

Dencun introduced blobs to support cheaper rollup data posting and signaled Ethereum’s rollup-centered scaling direction. Here’s how the roadmap has developed since 2024.

Ethereum’s defining 2024 roadmap milestone was Dencun, which went live on March 13, 2024. Its proto-danksharding upgrade introduced blob transactions to give rollups a cheaper way to post data to Ethereum. The change signaled a scaling strategy centered on rollups and lower data costs—not a promise that every user or every rollup would see the same fee reduction.

The roadmap has continued to evolve since Dencun. Ethereum.org’s roadmap, last updated September 24, 2026, lists Pectra and Fusaka as delivered and Glamsterdam as in development with a Q4 2026 target. These are protocol-development milestones, not investment forecasts or guarantees of delivery.

What did Ethereum’s 2024 roadmap update mean?

The phrase “2024 roadmap update” does not identify one specific Ethereum announcement or diagram. The clearest milestone to anchor the year is Dencun: Ethereum.org dates its activation to March 13, 2024. Its significance was the direction it reinforced—scaling through rollups that process transactions outside Ethereum’s base layer and post data back to it.

Dencun’s central scaling feature, proto-danksharding (EIP-4844), introduced blob transactions. Blobs provide a separate, temporary data mechanism intended to make it cheaper for rollups to publish transaction data to Ethereum. The Ethereum.org Danksharding explainer describes lower data costs as something that can be passed through to rollup users as lower transaction fees. That is a potential effect of the mechanism, not a universal fee outcome: what users pay depends on the rollup and its own conditions.

What else did Dencun change?

Dencun also included protocol changes beyond rollup data posting. Ethereum.org’s roadmap lists transient storage opcodes (EIP-1153), which support more efficient temporary storage patterns, and the beacon block root in the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EIP-4788), which makes consensus-layer information available to smart contracts. These features address different technical needs; blob transactions are the change most directly tied to the rollup-scaling direction.

Why are rollups central to Ethereum’s scaling plan?

Rollups execute transactions away from Ethereum’s base layer and rely on Ethereum for data posting and other underlying guarantees. Blobs are intended to reduce the cost of that data channel, supporting rollup activity without making shard chains the core scaling route. Ethereum.org says shard chains are no longer part of the roadmap, in part because rollups developed faster than expected.

This is a strategic choice, not a claim that all rollups work alike or that one is best. The sources cited here establish Ethereum’s rollup-and-blob direction but do not compare individual rollups’ costs, security assumptions, or decentralization in enough detail to rank them.

What has happened on the roadmap since Dencun?

The roadmap is a changing plan rather than a fixed delivery contract. As listed on Ethereum.org’s page last updated September 24, 2026, the later milestones include:

Upgrade Status and date on the roadmap Listed focus
Pectra Delivered May 7, 2025 Smart-contract functionality for externally owned account wallets; a maximum effective validator balance of 2,048 ETH; and a blob target of six per block, with a maximum of nine.
Fusaka Delivered December 3, 2025 PeerDAS, blob parameter-only forks, and gas-limit and denial-of-service hardening.
Glamsterdam In development; Q4 2026 target Proposals include enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists.

These items address different constraints: wallet capabilities and validator balances, data availability and blob capacity, and execution on Ethereum’s base layer. The status and target above are how the roadmap presented them on its stated update date; targets can change as development proceeds.

Does the roadmap mean Ethereum fees will fall?

Blobs were designed to make rollup data posting cheaper, and lower data costs may be passed on to rollup users. But Dencun does not set a single fee for all Ethereum activity or guarantee a particular reduction. Its mechanism targets rollups’ cost of posting data; it should not be read as a promise about every rollup’s user fees or fees for transactions on Ethereum’s base layer.

Do Ethereum users need to do anything for upgrades?

Ethereum.org’s roadmap FAQ says typical users generally do not need to take action when network upgrades happen. Node operators need to follow client release guidance and update software for upgrades; application developers may need to account for particular changes. The roadmap alone is not a reason for users to move ETH, replace a wallet, or buy equipment.

Will Ethereum’s roadmap change over time?

Yes. Ethereum.org describes the roadmap as a current plan and says timing is difficult to predict; development is community-driven and priorities may shift as information and technology change. The Ethereum Foundation’s September 7, 2026 post, “EF Protocol: Current and Emerging Priorities”, also reflects ongoing work on protocol priorities. Readers should treat roadmap dates as status at the time they are published, not guaranteed deadlines.
