Ethereum burns the entire base fee and pays validator tips to validators. Solana burns half its base fee and pays the other half, plus all priority fees, to validators. To tell whether ETH or SOL supply actually contracted over a period, compare the amount burned with the amount issued during that same period.
What a fee burn does—and does not—tell you
A fee burn permanently removes tokens that would otherwise remain in circulation. It reduces supply relative to the alternative in which those tokens were not burned. But a burn is only one supply flow: a network can issue new tokens while burning fees, and the net result depends on how those amounts compare over a defined period.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters when describing a token as “deflationary.” A protocol rule that burns some fees does not establish that total supply is falling. The relevant calculation for a period is issuance minus burns: if issuance is greater, supply increased; if burns are greater, supply decreased. This comparison also needs a time window, because activity and issuance can vary. Ethereum’s documentation explains that periods of high demand can produce more ETH burned than minted, offsetting issuance; it does not establish that this is always the outcome. See Ethereum’s technical introduction to ether.
For Solana, the fee split likewise describes what happens to fees, not the net direction of SOL supply. Solana has a scheduled inflation mechanism that funds validation. Its published inflation parameters are not a measurement of the amount of SOL actually added to supply over a particular recent period, nor are they a direct measure of staking yield.

How Ethereum’s transaction fees affect ETH
Gas measures the work a transaction uses
Ethereum charges for computation using gas. A transaction’s fee depends on the gas used and the applicable fee rate. The base fee is set for each block and adjusts according to how much gas the preceding block used relative to its target. The user can also include a priority fee, commonly called a tip, to reward the validator that includes the transaction. Ethereum’s documentation describes the fee components and calculation in its gas and fees technical overview; the protocol specification is EIP-1559.
In simplified form, the fee is the gas used multiplied by the base fee plus the priority fee. That makes two separate inputs important: how much gas the transaction consumes, and the fee rates in effect when it is included. A transaction that uses more gas can cost more than a simpler one even under the same fee conditions. When demand pushes the base fee higher, the burned portion rises for each unit of gas used. The priority fee remains a separate payment to the validator.
The base fee is burned; the tip goes to the validator
Ethereum burns the full base fee paid for a transaction. The priority fee is not burned: it goes to the validator that includes the transaction. ETH is also issued as consensus rewards to validators. The burn therefore offsets some or potentially all of issuance over a given period, but the fee rule does not impose a guaranteed fixed supply.
A standard ETH transfer is documented as requiring 21,000 gas units. That is an example of the gas required for a simple transfer, not a quoted fee or a constant price: the ETH paid depends on the applicable fee rate when the transaction is included. More complex transactions can use different amounts of gas. Ethereum’s transaction documentation gives the transfer example and explains transaction fee fields.
So the 21,000-gas figure answers a question about resource use, not how many ETH a user will pay. To estimate a fee, the gas amount must be paired with the applicable base fee and any priority fee. Those rates can change with network conditions. Nor should the priority fee be counted as a burn simply because it is part of what a user pays: it goes to the validator, while the base fee is the component removed from supply.
How Solana’s transaction fees affect SOL
Base fees are charged per signature
Solana’s fee documentation lists a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, including applicable precompile signatures. Under the documented split, half of the base fee is burned and half is paid to the block-producing validator. This is a protocol parameter shown on Solana’s Fee Structure page as accessed in 2026; runtime parameters can change, so the published figure should not be treated as immutable.
The signature basis is an important difference from Ethereum’s gas basis. The documented base amount is assessed per signature rather than being a direct price for compute consumed. A transaction with applicable precompile signatures also includes those in the fee accounting. The split determines the destination of the base fee after it is charged: one half is removed from supply and the other half is validator fee revenue.

Priority fees depend on requested compute
A Solana transaction may also include an optional priority fee. Its amount is based on the compute-unit price and the compute-unit limit requested by the transaction. The default compute-unit price is zero. All priority fees go to validators under the documented rule, rather than being burned.
The requested limit matters: the priority fee calculation uses the requested compute-unit limit, not just the compute actually consumed. Setting a limit well above what the transaction needs can therefore increase the fee without providing a corresponding supply burn. Solana explains the fee formula and this distinction in its fee documentation.
This gives users a practical point to check when configuring a transaction: the compute-unit limit should reflect the transaction’s needs rather than being set unnecessarily high. A higher requested limit can raise the priority fee even when the transaction finishes using less compute. Because priority fees go to validators, that increase does not add to the amount burned under the documented allocation. Conversely, the default compute-unit price of zero means that no priority-fee amount is added by default, though a transaction still has its base-fee mechanics.
Failed transactions still incur fees
Solana deducts transaction fees before execution. If execution fails, the fee is still charged. A failed transaction therefore can still contribute to the network’s fee distribution and base-fee burn; failure does not reverse the fee deduction.
That is a useful distinction when looking at fee totals: a transaction’s failure does not mean its fee disappears from the accounting. The documented fee is collected before execution, with the base-fee split and priority-fee allocation applying even if the requested operation does not succeed.
Fee mechanics at a glance
| Feature | Ethereum | Solana |
|---|---|---|
| Fee basis | Gas used and the applicable gas fee rate. | Base fee per signature, plus an optional priority fee based on compute-unit price and requested compute-unit limit. |
| Base-fee burn | The full base fee is burned. | Half the base fee is burned. |
| Validator fee revenue | Priority fees go to the validator that includes the transaction. | The non-burned half of the base fee and all priority fees go to validators. |
| Other supply flow | ETH is issued as consensus rewards. | SOL follows an inflation schedule that funds validation. |
| Illustrative documented parameter | A standard ETH transfer is listed at 21,000 gas units; this is not a fee quote. | The Fee Structure page lists 5,000 lamports per signature as its base fee parameter as accessed in 2026. |
Ethereum fee details are documented in its gas overview, transaction guide and EIP-1559 specification. Solana’s values and fee allocation are from its Fee Structure documentation. The table compares how each mechanism works; it does not imply that their fee amounts are directly comparable.
Why raw fee numbers are not an apples-to-apples comparison
The networks do not price the same unit of work in the same way. Ethereum expresses fees through gas consumed and a gas price, commonly quoted in gwei. Solana’s base fee is assessed per signature, while its optional priority fee is tied to requested compute. A nominal figure from one system cannot be compared with a figure from the other without converting units and matching the workload.

For a meaningful transaction-cost comparison, specify what each transaction does, how much computation it requires, how many signatures are involved where relevant, and the fee conditions at the time. A simple transfer is not an adequate stand-in for every transaction type. Solana’s payment documentation describes payment costs and local fee markets, which can affect what a particular transaction needs to pay.
Even a fair comparison of user costs would not by itself answer which token has the larger net supply reduction. That requires aggregate fees burned across the network, plus issuance, over the same dated interval. One transaction’s fee split is a mechanism-level fact; total supply movement is an aggregate result.
A careful comparison therefore has two different jobs. First, compare the cost of a matched task: identify the action, resource use, applicable signatures, and the fee conditions for each network. Second, compare token-supply effects: tally the fee components burned across each network and the tokens issued over the same interval. A cheaper individual transaction does not automatically mean a larger or smaller aggregate burn. Aggregate totals also depend on the number and mix of transactions, while issuance is a separate flow.
Keep the units visible when presenting costs. Ethereum’s gas and gwei figures describe different parts of a fee calculation; Solana’s lamports-per-signature base fee and compute-unit priority pricing describe different parts of its system. A headline comparison that quotes two raw numbers without specifying what they measure can confuse a unit of computation, a fee rate, and a token amount. State the transaction workload and the conditions alongside any quoted cost.
Solana’s inflation schedule is not the same as realized supply growth
Solana’s staking page publishes three schedule parameters: an initial inflation rate of 8%, an annualized disinflation rate of −15%, and a long-term rate of 1.5%. These figures describe the published inflation schedule, not a current observed net supply-growth figure. They should also not be mistaken for staking yield, which is a different measure. Solana describes the schedule and the distinction on its staking page.

To assess actual SOL supply movement, a reader would need the issuance and burns recorded over the same period. The schedule parameters alone cannot show whether fee burns outweighed issuance during a particular month or year. The same principle applies to ETH: the base-fee burn and consensus issuance must be measured across a matching interval before making a claim about net supply change.
The inflation figures are useful for understanding the design of Solana’s issuance schedule, but they do not answer how much SOL was issued in a specific period. Nor does a staking yield substitute for supply accounting: yield and inflation are not interchangeable measures. When a claim concerns net supply, use realized issuance and burn totals for the dates being discussed instead of treating the schedule parameters as the answer.

How to evaluate a claim that ETH or SOL is deflationary
- Define the period. State the exact dates being compared. A claim about a particular week or year is different from a claim about a protocol’s long-run design.
- Measure issuance and burns over that interval. For ETH, account for consensus issuance and the base fees burned. For SOL, account for issuance and the burned half of base fees.
- Compare the two flows. If issuance exceeds burns, supply grew over that period; if burns exceed issuance, supply fell. Do not infer the result from the burn percentage alone.
- Keep the claim at the right scope. Say which token, period and supply measure the data covers. A per-transaction rule does not establish a network-wide or permanent supply trend.
- Separate protocol parameters from observations. Solana’s published inflation schedule describes intended parameters; it is not a substitute for dated realized issuance and burn totals.
The official materials cited here describe the fee and issuance mechanisms but do not provide a paired, current-period dataset comparing aggregate ETH and SOL burns with issuance on both networks. Without those aligned totals, it is not sound to claim that either token’s total supply changed more over a recent period.
When reading a claim, ask whether it uses the same start and end dates for issuance and burns, whether it distinguishes base-fee burns from validator payments, and whether the scope is a single transaction or the whole network. On Ethereum, counting the priority tip as a burn would misstate the fee allocation. On Solana, treating all fees as burned would ignore the validator’s share of the base fee and all priority fees. These distinctions are essential before deciding whether the arithmetic supports a net decrease.

What the comparison means for users and token holders
For someone sending a transaction, the fee rules help explain where the payment goes, but they do not establish an investment outcome. On Ethereum, a higher base fee means a larger burn per unit of gas used, while a priority tip compensates a validator. On Solana, a higher base fee increases both the amount burned and the amount paid to the block-producing validator in the documented 50/50 split; a priority fee adds validator revenue rather than a burn. The actual effect across a network depends on transaction activity as well as issuance.
For a token holder trying to understand supply, distinguish three statements: “the protocol burns this fee component,” “the network burned more tokens than it issued during a specified period,” and “the token is deflationary.” The first follows from the fee rules. The second needs period-specific totals. The third needs a clearly defined scope and should not be presented as a permanent guarantee based only on the first.
These distinctions also keep fee mechanics separate from a decision about buying or holding a token. The fee rules explain allocation and supply flows; they do not, by themselves, establish future price performance or make either network a better investment. The evidence needed for a narrow protocol statement is different from what would be needed for an investment conclusion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Ethereum and Solana transaction fees make ETH and SOL deflationary?
Not by themselves. Ethereum burns the full base fee, and Solana burns half its base fee, but each network also has issuance. A token’s supply falls over a specified period only if burns exceed issuance during that period.
Which part of an Ethereum transaction fee is burned?
The entire EIP-1559 base fee is burned. A priority fee, or tip, goes to the validator that includes the transaction. ETH is also issued as consensus rewards, so burns and issuance must be compared to determine net supply movement.

How much of a Solana transaction fee is burned?
Solana’s Fee Structure documentation lists a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature as accessed in 2026; half is burned and half goes to the block-producing validator. All priority fees go to validators. Check the current documentation because runtime parameters can change.
Why can a Solana priority fee be higher than expected?
The priority fee is based on the compute-unit price and the requested compute-unit limit, not only on compute actually consumed. A needlessly high requested limit can raise the fee. The default compute-unit price is zero.
Are failed Solana transactions charged a fee?
Yes. Solana deducts fees before execution, so a failed transaction still incurs a fee and the documented fee distribution still applies.

Not as raw numbers. Ethereum uses gas consumed and a gas price, commonly quoted in gwei; Solana charges a base fee per signature and can add priority pricing based on requested compute. Compare a matched transaction workload and state the relevant fee conditions and units.
What are Solana’s published inflation schedule parameters?
Solana’s staking page lists an initial inflation rate of 8%, an annualized disinflation rate of −15%, and a long-term rate of 1.5%. These are schedule parameters, not a current observed net supply-growth figure or staking yield.
The Bottom Line
Ethereum burns its full base fee, while Solana burns half its base fee; validator tips and priority fees are not burned under the documented rules. Neither split alone proves that ETH or SOL supply is shrinking. To make that claim, compare dated, network-wide burn totals with issuance for the same period—and do not confuse fee units or schedule parameters with realized net supply change.
