Ethereum Mainnet is the base settlement network; rollup layer-2s process transactions away from Mainnet and publish data or results back to it. That batching can make many transactions cheaper and increase throughput, but no L2 is always cheapest or best: fees change, and networks differ in withdrawal times, security assumptions, app availability, and maturity. Choose based on the exact transaction and route you need—not a permanent fee ranking.
What is the difference between Ethereum Mainnet and a layer-2 network?
Ethereum Mainnet is Ethereum’s base network: transactions execute there and use its blockspace. A rollup layer-2 (L2) executes transactions off Mainnet, groups them into batches, then publishes transaction data or results to Ethereum. Spreading shared costs across a batch can reduce the cost per transaction, while off-Mainnet execution can increase throughput. Ethereum.org’s explanation of optimistic rollups describes this basic model.

“Layer 2” is not one uniform product. Rollups use different methods to establish that their state updates are valid, and individual networks can also differ in bridges, operators, upgrade arrangements, supported applications, and maturity. A transaction on an L2 is not simply a cheaper Mainnet transaction: it takes place in a distinct network environment, and moving assets between that environment and Mainnet involves a bridge route.

That distinction matters when planning a sequence of actions. You may pay to move an asset to an L2, pay again to use an application there, then face another fee and a wait if you later move the asset back. The lower cost of an individual L2 transaction does not automatically make the whole journey cheaper. Compare the route from where the funds are now to where you ultimately need them, including both the activity and the exit.
Which is cheaper: Ethereum Mainnet or an L2?
An L2 may cost less for a given action, but there is no permanently cheapest network. Fees vary with demand, transaction type, data publication costs, and network-specific operator charges. A token swap, contract interaction, and bridge transaction can have different costs even on the same network. A dashboard average is a useful comparison point, not a quote for your transaction.
Ethereum.org’s live network explorer displayed the following average transaction fee estimates when accessed on October 12, 2026. The figures are a volatile snapshot, not a controlled, like-for-like benchmark or a promise of what a particular user will pay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Network | Displayed average fee | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum Mainnet | $0.059 | Dashboard estimate accessed October 12, 2026; the fee can change with demand and transaction type. |
| Base | $0.002 | Dashboard estimate accessed October 12, 2026; not a guaranteed price for a particular action. |
| Arbitrum One | $0.003 | Dashboard estimate accessed October 12, 2026; not a guaranteed price for a particular action. |
Ethereum.org’s network explorer also lists Optimism, Starknet, Ink, Unichain, zkSync Era, Scroll, Linea, and Zircuit. In the captured dashboard rendering, some fee entries appeared as $0.00 or were unavailable. A rounded zero is not proof that a transaction is literally free, and a missing figure does not establish a fee level.
As a broad summary, Ethereum.org’s Scaling Ethereum page, last updated June 24, 2026, says rollups today are roughly 5–20 times cheaper than Ethereum L1. That general statement is not a quote for any particular transaction or a guarantee that every rollup will be cheaper in every situation. Roadmap expectations of further reductions should likewise be treated as expectations, not current prices.
So, which is cheaper in practice? Start with the current estimate for the action you actually intend to make, not the cheapest-looking figure in a network list. If comparing a swap, compare a swap on each candidate network; if moving funds, include the bridge leg and any fees on both sides. The October 12 figures show that the explorer’s estimates for Base and Arbitrum One were much lower than Mainnet’s at that moment. They do not establish a permanent ordering, predict what your wallet will quote, or show the total cost of a cross-network route.
What an L2 transaction fee can include
An L2 fee can combine several costs rather than reflect one simple gas-price number. These include publishing data to Ethereum, writing to network state, and charges set by the rollup operator. In ZK systems, generating and verifying validity proofs also contribute to the system’s costs. Demand for Ethereum blockspace, blob or other data capacity, and activity on the L2 can all affect what a user sees. Ethereum.org’s ZK-rollup documentation explains the validity-proof model and fee factors.
For a decision you are about to make, check the transaction quote in the wallet or application and read what it covers. If you are bridging, include both the cost of the bridge route and any transaction fees on the source or destination network. Do not use a network-wide average as a substitute for the amount shown for your exact action.
A useful comparison is a like-for-like one: same kind of action, comparable asset, and the same point in the route. A fee estimate for a simple transfer should not be treated as the expected cost of a more involved contract interaction. Likewise, the fee for an action after funds have arrived on an L2 does not include the cost of getting those funds there. When comparing a quoted amount, check whether it is an estimate for one transaction or an aggregate for multiple steps.

Fees can also change between the moment you research a network and the moment you submit a transaction. Network activity and the cost of publishing data to Ethereum are not fixed. Review the quote immediately before confirming, and pay attention to any displayed changes in the amount or route. A dated average is helpful context, but a wallet or application’s current quote is more relevant to the action in front of you.
How much faster are L2s, and what does “speed” mean?
Rollups can process transactions off Mainnet and batch them, which can improve throughput. But “fast” can mean several different things: the time until a transaction is included, the time until the L2 treats it as confirmed, or the time until it is settled on Ethereum or can be withdrawn to Mainnet. Those milestones are not interchangeable.
The exact confirmation and exit experience depends on the rollup’s proof and bridge design. A quick confirmation within an L2 does not necessarily mean that a standard withdrawal to Mainnet is complete. Check the network’s own documentation for the transaction type and route you plan to use; a general label such as “L2” does not establish a universal processing time.
For a user, it helps to ask what the transaction needs to accomplish. If you need to interact with an application on the L2, the relevant question may be when that L2 treats your action as confirmed. If you need to return the funds to Mainnet, the relevant measure is the exit route’s completion time, which can be much longer for a standard optimistic-rollup withdrawal. A headline about throughput or a quick transaction experience does not answer both questions.
There is no single speed figure in the comparison above that can fairly describe every L2 action. The timing depends on the network and the stage you care about, so treat claims about speed as incomplete unless they say whether they refer to inclusion, confirmation, settlement, or withdrawal. Before bridging, check the expected time for both the transfer to the L2 and any route back to Mainnet.
How optimistic and ZK rollups differ
| Rollup type | How correctness is established | What to know about exits and fees |
|---|---|---|
| Optimistic | Batches are treated as valid unless challenged through a fraud-proof process. Transaction data is published to Ethereum, supporting independent verification. | The challenge period can make a standard withdrawal from an optimistic rollup to Mainnet take roughly seven days. A liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee. Network implementations can differ. |
| ZK | The L1 contract accepts state updates when it accepts validity proofs. | Data publication and operator charges contribute to fees, as do proof generation and verification. Proof, upgrade, and decentralization arrangements vary by network. |
The roughly seven-day period is Ethereum.org’s explanation of the standard optimistic-rollup withdrawal challenge period, not a promise that every network or route takes exactly that long. See its Optimistic Rollups documentation, last updated June 23, 2026. A faster liquidity-provider exit changes the route and has a fee; it is not the same as the standard withdrawal process.

For ZK rollups, validity proofs change how updates are accepted; the category name alone does not tell you every network’s trust assumptions or operational design. Review the individual network’s documentation and risk assessment rather than assuming all rollups of one type behave identically.
The proof model is one part of the comparison, not a complete safety score. Rollups still have network-specific arrangements, including operators and upgrade processes, and those details can affect the assumptions a user is relying on. “Settles on Ethereum” describes the rollup’s relationship to Mainnet; it should not be read as meaning every operational risk disappears or that every asset and application has identical protections.
Similarly, the general optimistic and ZK labels do not tell you all the details of a particular network’s bridge or exit. Check the individual network’s documentation for its process and risk assessment. For an optimistic rollup, distinguish a standard withdrawal subject to a challenge period from a faster liquidity-provider route. For a ZK rollup, understand that validity proofs are accepted by an L1 contract, while costs and the wider network design still vary.

When should you use Mainnet instead of an L2?
Use Mainnet when the route or application requires it
Mainnet is the practical choice if the application, asset, or settlement path you need is available only there. It is also relevant when your decision specifically depends on Mainnet’s own execution and settlement environment. Before paying a higher or lower displayed fee elsewhere, confirm that the destination network supports the application and the assets needed for the task.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Availability is a basic prerequisite, not a detail to check after bridging. A network’s presence in an explorer or a low displayed average fee does not establish that the application you want is available there or that the particular asset you hold is supported on that route. If your task requires a specific application, token, or settlement path, make sure it is supported before comparing fees.
Consider an L2 when it supports the task
An L2 is worth considering when the application and assets you need are available on that network and its transaction costs or processing experience fit your purpose. Compare the actual action, not just the network name: a lower average fee does not tell you the price of your swap or contract call, or what it will cost to move funds back.
For repeated activity, think about the full pattern rather than a single fee. A suitable L2 may be useful if your intended application and assets are available there and the live quotes and timing work for you. If you only need one action, the cost and time of bridging into the network and returning afterward may matter more than a low per-action average. The right comparison depends on the task and the route, not on a universal rule that L2 is always the better choice.
Factor network maturity into the decision
Ethereum.org cautions that many L2 projects are young or experimental. Its network explorer describes maturity criteria involving a project’s stage, total value locked (TVL), and time in production, and directs readers to project risk assessments. TVL or a maturity label should not be mistaken for a guarantee of safety; review the specific network’s assessment and assumptions before moving funds. The explorer’s network list and maturity framework are at ethereum.org/layer-2/networks/.
Maturity is a separate consideration from price and speed. A low fee estimate does not tell you how established a network is, and a maturity framework is not a substitute for understanding the project’s own risks. Consider the network’s stage and time in production alongside the application, asset, bridge route, and transaction quote. If you cannot explain what the network’s relevant assumptions mean for your planned use, pause and review its documentation before transferring funds.
How to move ETH or tokens to an L2
Bridging changes where an asset is available and adds a route, fee, and timing decision to the transaction. The exact interface varies by bridge and network, so use the bridge’s own instructions and verify every transaction in your wallet rather than relying on generic button labels.
Think of a bridge transfer as a separate decision from the activity you intend to do after arrival. First establish that the destination supports the application and asset; then compare the amount you will receive and the costs shown for the route. Consider the return journey at the same time. If you know you will need Mainnet again, a route that is inexpensive on the way in may still involve a later fee or withdrawal wait on the way out.
- Confirm the destination first. Check that the application and the specific asset you need are supported on the intended L2. Confirm the destination network shown by the bridge and wallet before approving anything.
- Compare the route and amount. Review the amount you will receive, the bridge fee, and transaction fees shown for the source and destination steps. Ethereum.org’s bridge guide, last updated June 6, 2026, specifically advises checking the amount received and fees before confirming.
- Check timing and the return path. Find the expected time for the bridge transfer and the steps and costs to return the asset to Mainnet. If the route uses a standard optimistic-rollup withdrawal, account for the challenge period described above.
- Review network-specific risks. Read the network’s own documentation and risk assessment, including relevant proof, operator, upgrade, and maturity assumptions. A bridge route does not make two networks interchangeable.
- Confirm only after verifying the details. Compare the final transaction details in the wallet with the route and amount you intended. If the destination, asset, amount, fee, or timing is unclear, stop and resolve that uncertainty before confirming.
Keep the source and destination straight throughout the process: the source is where the funds start, and the destination is the network where you expect to use them. Check both in the bridge interface and in the wallet before approval. A transfer confirmation should match the asset and amount you expect to arrive; do not infer the received amount from the fee estimate alone.

When weighing a bridge, look at the full path rather than treating “bridge fee” as the only cost. The interface may display fees for the bridge route and transactions on the source or destination network. The exact presentation varies, so inspect the actual quote and the amount received before confirming. If the displayed route, token, or destination differs from what you intended, do not proceed until you understand the discrepancy.
Returning to Mainnet is also part of the decision. The relevant route and timing depend on the network and bridge design. In particular, a standard optimistic-rollup withdrawal may involve roughly seven days for the challenge period, while a liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee. Do not assume that the time it took to move funds onto an L2 predicts how long it will take to withdraw them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision checklist
- Task: Is the required application and asset available on the network you are considering?
- Cost: What does the live quote show for your precise action, and what additional bridge or return fees apply?
- Timing: Are you comparing inclusion, L2 confirmation, settlement, or a completed withdrawal?
- Exit: What route returns the asset to Mainnet, how long does it take, and is a faster route fee-based?
- Risk and maturity: What are the network’s specific proof, operator, upgrade, and maturity assumptions?
These criteria help compare routes; they are not a recommendation to buy, hold, or bridge any particular asset.
A concise decision sequence is: identify the application and asset, verify that the network supports them, compare the live quote for your exact action, and add the bridge and return costs. Then check the timing milestone you care about and review the network’s risk assessment. If any of those details are unavailable or unclear, a low average fee by itself is not enough to settle the choice.

Frequently asked questions
Is an Ethereum L2 always cheaper than Mainnet?
No. Ethereum.org says rollups today are roughly 5–20 times cheaper than Ethereum L1 as a broad summary, but that is not a quote for every transaction. Fees depend on the action, demand, data publication, and operator charges. Compare the live estimate for your exact transaction and include bridging costs if funds need to move between networks.
How much does it cost to use Ethereum Mainnet, Base, or Arbitrum One?
Ethereum.org’s network explorer showed average fee estimates of $0.059 for Mainnet, $0.002 for Base, and $0.003 for Arbitrum One when accessed October 12, 2026. Those are dated dashboard estimates, not guaranteed prices or a like-for-like test of a particular action. Check the current wallet or application quote before submitting a transaction.
Why might a fee tracker show $0.00?
A displayed $0.00 may be a rounded value, and an unavailable entry does not indicate a fee. Neither should be interpreted as proof that a transaction is literally free. Check the live quote for the specific action you plan to take.
How long does it take to withdraw from an optimistic rollup to Mainnet?
Ethereum.org describes a standard optimistic-rollup withdrawal challenge period of roughly seven days. Network implementations and routes can differ. A liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee, but that is a different route from the standard withdrawal process.

What should I check before bridging ETH or tokens to an L2?
Verify that the destination supports the application and asset, check the network and token shown in the bridge and wallet, and review the amount received and all displayed fees before confirming. Also check how long the transfer and any return to Mainnet may take, including whether a standard optimistic-rollup withdrawal has a challenge period.
When should I stay on Ethereum Mainnet?
Use Mainnet when the application, asset, or settlement path you need is only available there, or when your choice depends on Mainnet’s own execution and settlement environment. If considering an L2, first verify that the same task and assets are supported there, then compare the total route cost, timing, and network assumptions.
