Etched has not reported closing a new funding round. TechCrunch reported on October 5, 2026, that the AI hardware startup was reviewing early investment offers implying a valuation of $40 billion to $50 billion. The terms could change, and the company declined to comment, so the range is an indication of reported investor interest—not an agreed valuation or completed financing.

What the $40 billion–$50 billion figure means

TechCrunch attributed the offers to people familiar with the company. One person described offers around $40 billion from top-tier investors and around $50 billion from lesser-known backers. The report did not identify those investors or publish financing documents establishing the proposed terms. TechCrunch’s October 5 report said discussions were at an early stage and could change; Etched declined to comment.

The “$40B+” in the headline is shorthand for that reported range. It is not a confirmed company valuation, a price investors have formally agreed to, or evidence that a new round has closed. Axios repeated the range in an October 6 newsletter while attributing it to TechCrunch, rather than reporting an independently confirmed deal. Axios’s newsletter therefore shows that the report circulated, but does not establish separate confirmation.

How the reported offers compare with Etched’s earlier rounds

TechCrunch reported that Etched raised $700 million at a $21 billion valuation in September 2026. Before that, a July report described a $300 million Series C at a $10.3 billion valuation, based on an interview with co-founder and COO Robert Wachen. These figures are reported financing terms, not a guarantee that the company’s value has risen by any particular amount: round size, investor rights, share classes, and other terms can affect how valuations compare.

September 2026 round $700 million raised at a $21 billion valuation Reported by TechCrunch in October; Jane Street led the round.

The July report also said Etched reported $1 billion in customer orders at that time. Orders are not the same as revenue: the figure does not establish how much customers paid, how much hardware was delivered, or whether all orders will be fulfilled. TechCrunch’s July financing and product report attributes the orders figure to the company.

Why Etched’s business matters to the funding story

Etched is developing full AI inference systems built around proprietary chips, rather than selling only a standalone chip. Inference is the computing work involved in generating results from a trained AI model. TechCrunch’s July account described two phases: prefill, which processes a prompt and its context, and decode, which generates output tokens.

MX3 M.2 AI Accelerator
  • High-Performance AI Processing: The MX3 is designed to handle the most demanding AI computer vision workloads, delivering exceptional performance and efficiency.
  • Flexible Integration: The MX3 can be easily integrated into your existing systems via its M.2 M-key form factor and support for Linux operating systems.
  • Energy Efficient: The MX3 is designed to provide high performance while minimizing power consumption.
  • Comprehensive Software Development Kit (SDK): The MX3 is supported by a comprehensive SDK that simplifies development and deployment.
  • Hardware compatability: The MX3 is compatible with the PCI-SIG M.2 M-key 2280 Specification. It can be used with the Raspberry Pi 5 with a M-key 2280 HAT.

Wachen told TechCrunch that Etched designed separate components for those workloads: a low-voltage approach for prefill, and memory and interconnect technology intended for decode at cluster scale. The same article reported the company’s claims that its systems could run transformer models, mixture-of-experts models such as DeepSeek and Qwen, and non-transformer designs such as Mamba. Those are descriptions and compatibility claims from the company, not independently verified evidence of superior speed, cost, or energy efficiency.

Building and delivering complete systems is capital-intensive. TechCrunch reported that Etched had chips manufactured and that clients were testing its first full systems, while mass production and delivery remained ahead. The October report also described a new 10-megawatt data center in Silicon Valley and a Taiwan facility intended to coordinate production near TSMC. Those milestones provide context for the company’s funding needs, but they do not by themselves establish commercial-scale shipments or customer adoption.

What the funding could mean for runway

A person familiar with the offers told TechCrunch that a new raise matching the prior $700 million round could provide up to 3.5 years of runway. That is a conditional estimate, not an official Etched forecast: it assumes a raise of comparable size, and the report does not provide a detailed spending plan or cash-burn calculation. The current offers were not reported as a finalized financing.

Scaling hardware requires more than designing chips: manufacturing, assembling systems, testing them with customers, and delivering them at volume all take time and capital. Wachen acknowledged the difficulty of that work in comments to TechCrunch: “We had no idea how hard it was going to be,” and said, “I think we still have to be humbled by what it will take to actually get to scale.”
