Portsmouth’s League One title and promotion to the Championship in 2024 are the clearest evidence that the Eisner family’s investment gamble paid off in sporting terms. But Eric Eisner was one member of the ownership group, not a documented sole architect, and the club reported a £5.6 million overall loss for the promotion season.
What was the Eisner family’s gamble at Portsmouth?
Michael Eisner’s company, Tornante, completed its takeover of Portsmouth in August 2017. BBC Sport reported an offer of £5.67 million for 100% of the club, alongside a commitment to invest a further £10 million. Eric and his brothers were named as board members. BBC Sport’s takeover report establishes Eric’s involvement in the family’s club project, but does not identify him as the lead investor or decision-maker.
Michael described the acquisition as a family undertaking. In 2022, he said, “My sons, along with my wife, Jane, have played an active role in the ownership of the club and have become avid and dedicated Pompey fans.” That is Michael’s account of the family’s involvement, not a measure of Eric’s individual influence. He also described a gradual investment approach: “We will invest as needed, not invest like crazy.” BBC Sport reported those comments in 2022.
Did the gamble pay off in football terms?
Yes, by the clearest sporting measure. Portsmouth won the League One title at the end of the 2023–24 season and returned to the Championship. That result gives the headline’s claim a sound basis: the club climbed back to the second tier after the Eisner family took ownership.

It does not prove that Eric personally produced the promotion. The available reporting documents his board role and family ownership, but does not assign him sole responsibility for the club’s football decisions or results.
What do the accounts say about the financial result?
Portsmouth’s accounts for the year ended June 2024 showed an overall loss of £5.6 million, according to BBC Sport’s report on the accounts. The same report said the club spent £5.4 million that year on Fratton Park, the training ground and gym infrastructure. It also put total Eisner-family investment since the 2017 acquisition at £37 million as of June 2024.

| Measure | Reported figure and period | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Sporting result | League One title and promotion at the end of 2023–24 | Portsmouth returned to the Championship. |
| Infrastructure spending | £5.4 million during the year ended June 2024 | Investment in Fratton Park, the training ground and gym infrastructure. |
| Family investment | £37 million since the 2017 acquisition, reported as of June 2024 | Cumulative reported investment by the Eisner family, not Eric’s individual contribution. |
| Overall result | £5.6 million loss for the year ended June 2024 | Promotion and spending on facilities did not mean the club made a profit that season. |
The figures describe different things and time periods: the loss is the result for one financial year, the infrastructure spending is a component of that year’s activity, and the £37 million is a cumulative family-investment figure since the takeover. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures of either annual operating performance or Eric’s personal spending.
What changed in the ownership in 2026?
In March 2026, Eric and his brothers each became 24.5% shareholders in Portsmouth FC LLC. Michael retained 26.5%, full voting rights and, according to BBC Sport, the only significant interest under EFL regulations. BBC Sport’s report on the share transfer describes a formal change in the sons’ ownership stakes, while distinguishing those stakes from Michael’s voting control.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should the headline be judged?
“Worked wonders” is defensible as a description of Portsmouth’s sporting turnaround: the club won League One and reached the Championship. It is too broad if read as a claim that the club was profitable, or that Eric alone deserves credit. The better-supported conclusion is that the family’s long-term backing coincided with a major on-pitch success, while the promotion-season accounts still showed a loss.
