On June 6, 2022, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney called the project a scam and said it had no permission to use Fortnite’s name and imagery to market an unrelated product. “Scam” was Sweeney’s characterization, not a reported court ruling.
What did Tim Sweeney say?
Sweeney posted his warning on June 6, 2022. He wrote: “There isn’t a Fortnite cryptocurrency. The Twitter accounts promoting such a thing are a scam. Epic’s lawyers are on it. Also, shame on the cryptocurrency marketplaces that enable this kind of thing.” GameSpot and Hypebeast reported the statement.
He also objected to the project’s branding: “That’s not how trademarks and copyrights work though. You can’t use the Fortnite name and images without permission to market an unrelated product.” This was Sweeney’s stated position; contemporaneous coverage did not report a court finding or final legal outcome.
What was Fortnite Token?
Contemporary reporting described Fortnite Token as an unofficial cryptocurrency project. Its account characterized it as a fan-created, community-driven project, but that self-description did not establish Epic’s authorization or endorsement. GameSpot reported the account’s response.

Game Developer reported that the project used Fortnite branding and promoted minting NFTs for resale. That describes what was reported at the time, not the project’s current availability or status.
Why did he object?
Sweeney’s objections were about two distinct issues: the implication of an official Fortnite cryptocurrency and the use of Fortnite’s intellectual property to promote a separate product. He said the name and images could not be used for that marketing without permission. The cited reports do not establish that a court decided the issue or confirm what happened after Epic’s lawyers became involved.

Did Epic reject all blockchain games?
No. A separate TechSpot report from June 7, 2022, recalled Sweeney’s October 15, 2021 statement that Epic Games Store would welcome blockchain games if they complied with relevant laws, disclosed their terms, and received age ratings. The report also said Epic was not using cryptocurrency in its own games at that time. That historical, conditional position is separate from Epic’s disavowal of Fortnite Token; it should not be read as a statement of current store policy. TechSpot
