On May 1, 2019, Psyonix announced that it had agreed to join Epic Games, subject to customary closing conditions. The announcement did not disclose a purchase price or detailed transaction terms. Psyonix said the deal would not immediately change Rocket League’s gameplay, and that players who already owned the game on Steam could keep playing and receive support.
What did Epic Games announce about Psyonix?
Psyonix’s May 1, 2019 post, “Psyonix is Joining the Epic Family!”, said the studio had agreed to join Epic Games. The post described the transaction as subject to customary closing conditions and gave an expected closing window of late May to early June 2019.
That was an expected window, not confirmation of the date the deal ultimately closed. The announcement did not state a final closing date, purchase price, or detailed terms. It therefore supports describing the agreement and what Psyonix said at the time, but not a specific valuation or verified completion date.
What did the agreement mean for Rocket League players?
Gameplay and updates
Psyonix told players that “in the short term, nothing will change at all,” and answered its gameplay question with “Nope!” Those were the studio’s announcement-time assurances: Psyonix said gameplay would not change and that it would continue updating the game. They should not be read as a guarantee about every later product decision or today’s support policies.

Psyonix said Rocket League would remain available on Steam. This describes the commitment Psyonix communicated in May 2019; it does not establish current availability or support arrangements.
Epic Games Store plans
Psyonix described bringing Rocket League to the Epic Games Store as a longer-term expectation. The announcement did not present that plan as an immediate gameplay change. It also did not give a date for the planned store move.

Why did Psyonix say it was joining Epic?
Psyonix framed the arrangement as a way to expand the game’s potential reach and resources, including for Rocket League esports. The team wrote that it believed the move would “significantly increase” that potential. This was the company’s rationale, not a measured result or a quantified commitment to esports spending.
The studio also said, “We are the same team that we’ve always been, only now, we have the power and experience of Epic Games behind us!” That is Psyonix’s description of its outlook at announcement time; it does not establish staffing levels, investment amounts, or how the studio later operated.

What was Rocket League’s platform context in 2019?
Before the acquisition announcement, Rocket League had already introduced cross-platform matchmaking. In a January 14, 2019 post, Psyonix said random matchmaking across PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam was live for online modes. The post said cross-platform parties would arrive in a future update. This is context for the game’s community at the time; it does not establish present-day platform support.
