There is no single EPF withdrawal amount or one rule for every situation. An employed member may be eligible for a specified advance; someone leaving a job may seek a final EPF settlement; a member changing jobs can transfer the balance; and EPS benefits follow separate rules from EPF. The claim route, your status and the applicable scheme rules determine what you may receive. EPFO’s October 2025 reform announcement describes significant proposed changes, but the cited official materials do not establish when they took effect. Check the current scheme and EPFO instructions before relying on those announced thresholds as entitlements.
First identify which kind of claim you need
“Withdrawing PF” can mean several different things. Choosing the wrong route can delay a claim or lead you to expect money that is not available under that claim. EPFO distinguishes a specified withdrawal during membership, final settlement after employment, transfer to a new account and benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS). Its official overview of EPFO schemes and forms lists the corresponding forms, but the form name alone does not determine eligibility.

| What you want to do | Route and form listed by EPFO | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Claim money for a specified reason while covered by EPF | Specified withdrawal; Form 31 | This is an advance route, not the same as closing the EPF account. The applicable reason, conditions and payable amount depend on the rules in force. |
| Seek final settlement of your own EPF after leaving employment | Member’s final EPF settlement; Form 19 | Leaving a job does not by itself establish when or how much can be claimed. Check the current conditions before filing. |
| Move an old EPF account to a new one after changing jobs | Transfer; Form 13 | A transfer is not a cash withdrawal. It carries the account balance toward continued membership. |
| Claim the EPF balance of a deceased member | Final settlement for a nominee or beneficiary; Form 20 | The claimant and route differ from a member claiming their own balance. |
| Claim an EPS withdrawal benefit or request a scheme certificate | Form 10C | EPS is separate from the EPF balance shown in the passbook. |
| Apply for monthly pension under EPS | Form 10D | This is a pension route, not a one-time EPF settlement. |

When can you withdraw EPF?
While you are still employed
A member may be able to claim a specified advance for an allowed purpose without making a final settlement. EPFO identifies Form 31 for specified withdrawals. The Ministry’s 24 June 2025 release names illness, education, marriage and housing among the purposes covered by the auto-settlement facility for eligible advance claims. That does not mean every expense in those broad categories qualifies, or that every member can claim the same amount: the applicable conditions and calculation ceiling must be checked for the specific reason.
#1 Best Overall
The June release says the auto-settlement ceiling for eligible advances was raised from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. It describes claims that qualify for auto-settlement as capable of being processed within three days. This is an automation threshold and a stated processing target, not a general right to withdraw ₹5 lakh, a promise that every claim will be approved, or a guarantee that every filing will be completed within three days. The announcement does not provide a full current, reason-by-reason calculation table.
There is also an important later announcement to account for. On 15 October 2025, the Ministry described reforms approved by EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees that would consolidate partial-withdrawal provisions and change eligibility and access rules. The source materials cited here do not establish the Gazette notification, commencement date or present operational status. Do not treat an announced reform as proof that a new rule is already in force. Check the current EPF Scheme, relevant Gazette notifications and EPFO member instructions for the operative rule before making a claim.

After leaving a job
A final EPF settlement is different from an advance. EPFO lists Form 19 for a member’s final settlement, but that label does not answer when a former employee becomes eligible or how much is payable. The October 2025 Ministry release says the announced reforms would lengthen the wait for premature final settlement of EPF from two months to 12 months. The companion EPFO briefing is reported in that release. Because the available announcement does not establish commencement, those periods should be read as announced reform parameters—not assumed to be the current rule for every former employee.

EPFO lists Form 13 for transfer of an old account to a new one. A transfer keeps the claim distinct from taking money out; it is not the same as filing Form 19 or a specified Form 31 advance.

For EPS, distinguish withdrawal benefit from pension
The Employees’ Pension Scheme is not simply another cash portion of the EPF passbook. EPFO lists Form 10C for an EPS withdrawal benefit or a scheme certificate, and Form 10D for monthly pension. Those are different outcomes, with different claim routes. The October 2025 announcement describes a proposed extension of the wait for final EPS withdrawal from two months to 36 months. As with the announced EPF waiting-period change, verify that this reform has taken effect before applying it to an individual claim.
How much PF can you withdraw?
The amount depends on the claim type and the rules that apply to your case. A ₹5 lakh auto-settlement ceiling is not a universal EPF withdrawal allowance: it concerns eligible advance claims processed through auto-settlement. A final settlement, a specified advance, an account transfer and an EPS claim are not interchangeable calculations.

The October 2025 Ministry release described a reform package under which 13 partial-withdrawal provisions would be merged into three categories. It reported a uniform 12-month minimum service period for partial withdrawals, access to 75% of an eligible amount without documentation, a minimum balance reserve of at least 25%, education withdrawals up to 10 times and marriage withdrawals up to five times. These are figures in the reform announcement, not verified current entitlements. The cited materials do not establish the effective date or supply a complete set of current category-specific formulas. Confirm the amended scheme and live EPFO instructions before using any of those figures to estimate a claim.

What changed in the June and October 2025 announcements?
| Official release | What it says | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry of Labour and Employment, 24 June 2025 | Raised the auto-settlement limit for eligible advances from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh; identified illness, education, marriage and housing claims; said qualifying claims can be processed within three days. | Use it to understand the announced automation ceiling and stated processing target, not as proof of eligibility for a particular withdrawal. |
| Ministry of Labour and Employment, 15 October 2025 | Described the CBT-approved reform package: 13 provisions combined into three categories, a 12-month minimum service period for partial withdrawals, a 75% access figure, a 25% minimum reserve, and revised education, marriage and waiting-period parameters. | Treat these as announced provisions unless current scheme text or a Gazette notification confirms commencement and the applicable rule. |
The June release also reported administrative figures for FY 2024–25: EPFO auto-settled 2.34 crore advance claims, up 161% from the previous year, and 59% of advance claims in that year were settled through auto mode. These figures describe EPFO activity in that financial year; they are not a forecast of an individual member’s processing time or the current share of claims handled automatically.

- Decide whether you need money, a transfer or a pension-related benefit. A specified advance, final EPF settlement, transfer, EPS withdrawal benefit and monthly pension have different routes. Use the form comparison above to identify the closest match.
- Check the current rule for your reason and status. Consult the current EPF Scheme, any applicable Gazette notification and the instructions in the EPFO member service. In particular, verify whether the October 2025 announced changes have commenced. Do not rely on a release describing Board approval as the only evidence of an operative rule.
- Check the claim route in EPFO’s member service. Start from the official EPFO member portal and follow the currently available claim flow. The service’s live instructions are more relevant to filing than an older form list on its own.
- Review your account and claim details before submission. Make sure you have selected the intended account and claim type, and that the member and payment details requested by the portal are accurate. The applicable amount cannot be established from the ceiling alone; check the amount displayed in the current claim process and the rule that applies to your case.
- Track the submitted claim in the official service. A stated auto-settlement target does not guarantee approval or completion for a claim that is ineligible, requires further handling or does not qualify for automation. Use the official claim-status route for the result rather than assuming that submission means payment.
Common mistakes that lead to confusion
- Confusing an advance with final settlement. Form 31 is listed for specified withdrawals; Form 19 is listed for a member’s final EPF settlement. Choose based on what you are claiming, not just on the fact that you need cash.
- Treating a transfer as a withdrawal. Form 13 is the transfer route identified by EPFO for moving an old account to a new one. It does not represent a cash payout.
- Adding EPS to the EPF balance as if both were payable the same way. EPFO identifies separate EPS routes: Form 10C for withdrawal benefit or a scheme certificate, and Form 10D for monthly pension.
- Reading ₹5 lakh as the amount every member can take. The June 2025 release ties that threshold to eligible advance claims handled under auto-settlement. Eligibility, claim reason and applicable calculation remain relevant.
- Applying an announced waiting period without checking its effective status. The October 2025 release reports proposed changes, but the available official materials here do not establish the date they became operative.
- Assuming a fast-processing target is a personal guarantee. The three-day period in the June release refers to qualifying auto-settlement claims; it does not guarantee approval or a fixed turnaround for every application.
Protect your account while making a claim
Use EPFO’s official member portal rather than a link sent by an unknown person. EPFO’s member portal provides current notices and links and warns members about credential theft. Never share your UAN password, Aadhaar details, bank information or one-time password with someone claiming they can secure or accelerate a withdrawal. If a message asks for credentials or an OTP outside the official claim flow, do not provide them; return to the portal directly and check its notices.
