If your EPF interest is not visible, first check the official EPFO Member Passbook with the correct member ID and financial year. A delayed passbook entry is not, by itself, proof that interest was not earned: EPFO has said that posting interest is an accounting entry and that the posting date has no actual financial bearing on interest earned. If the ledger still appears wrong after you verify contributions, transfers and withdrawals, submit a documented grievance through EPFiGMS and keep its reference number.
What “EPF interest not credited” can mean
Members commonly use that phrase for several different situations:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The annual interest line is not yet displayed in the passbook even though the calculation is due to be reflected later.
- The member is viewing a different member ID from the one that contains the relevant employment period.
- A transfer, withdrawal or employer contribution has been posted to another account or in a different period.
- The ledger contains a genuine calculation or accounting discrepancy.
The passbook is therefore a record to inspect, not an automatic diagnosis. Start with the official EPFO Member Passbook and Claim Status service, then document the exact year and member account before contacting EPFO.
Check your EPF account step by step
- Open the official Member Passbook and Claim Status login.
- Sign in with your Universal Account Number (UAN), password and the captcha displayed on the page.
- If more than one account appears, select the member ID connected with the employment period you are checking. This is particularly important if you changed employers, transferred accumulations or had more than one establishment.
- Open the ledger for the financial year in question. Look separately for employee contributions, employer contributions, transfers, withdrawals and the annual interest entry.
- Record the member ID, financial year, transaction dates and amounts. Save or print the relevant passbook pages for your records before raising a complaint.
- Compare the entries with your own employment and transfer history. A missing line in one member ID may be explained by a transfer or by activity recorded in another account.
Do not conclude that interest is permanently missing solely because the annual line is absent on the day you check. EPFO has explained that passbook updating is an entry process and that the date on which interest appears does not determine the interest earned for the year.

How to read the passbook when a line is absent
| What you see | What it may indicate | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Contributions are visible, but the annual interest line is not | The display entry may not have been posted yet | Check the same account and year again after confirming the correct member ID; if the ledger remains inconsistent, file a grievance |
| No contribution appears for an employment period | The contribution, transfer or wage-month posting may be in another member account or temporarily unavailable | Check other member IDs and transfer records; compare the wage month and employer records |
| A withdrawal or transfer appears in the period | The monthly balance used for interest can be affected by that transaction | Confirm its date and whether it belongs to the account and year under review |
| The account belongs to an earlier employer | Accumulations may have been transferred, leaving activity split across member IDs | Review every relevant member ID before alleging a missing credit |
EPFO’s 2023 parliamentary response described the principle this way:
“Updating of member passbook with interest is an entry process only, the date on which the interest is entered in the passbook of the member has no actual financial bearing as the interest earned for the year.”
The statement addresses the timing of the entry; it is not a guarantee that every individual ledger is error-free. A late display entry and a genuine calculation or accounting error remain different possibilities. Read the full response on EPFO’s parliamentary response on passbook updates and grievance redressal.
How EPF interest is calculated
Paragraph 60 of the Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, 1952 provides for interest on monthly running balances, with interest credited annually. That means the timing of a contribution or withdrawal matters; the account is not treated as though the full year’s balance existed unchanged on the first day of the year.
- For the year, interest is calculated on the preceding year’s closing balance, adjusted for sums withdrawn during the current year.
- Interest on an amount withdrawn runs up to the last day of the month before the withdrawal.
- Sums credited after the preceding year earn interest from the first day of the month following the month in which they are credited through the end of the current year, as described in the Scheme provision.
- The total interest is rounded to the nearest whole rupee. A fraction of 50 paise is treated as the next rupee.
The official text also describes two situations in which interest may not be credited in the ordinary way:
- A member may have informed the Commissioner in writing that they do not wish to receive interest, subject to the Scheme’s treatment if interest is requested later.
- The account may have become inoperative under the Scheme, in which case the stated non-credit treatment applies from the relevant date.
Those are provisions to apply to the facts of an individual account, not assumptions to make merely because an entry is late. Read the current wording in EPFO’s provisions on interest under the EPF Scheme, 1952.
Which interest rate should you expect?
Always match the rate to the financial year. Do not substitute an announced or discussed rate for the rate formally approved for the year you are checking.

| Financial year | Rate established in the cited official material | Status and source |
|---|---|---|
| 2024–25 | 8.25% | The Central Government approved 8.25%; EPFO’s circular dated 26 May 2025 instructed offices to credit this rate under paragraph 60. See the rate declaration circular. |

These are draft minutes, not final government approval. See the draft minutes. |
Do not quote the 8.15%–8.30% range as the final 2025–26 rate. Check EPFO’s current circulars for a formal approval notice before treating a number as final. The 8.25% figure above is specifically for 2024–25 and should not be carried into another year automatically.
Temporary contribution visibility and posting delays
EPFO published a notice stating that passbook updates for wage months September and October 2025 were in process because of revamped Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) ledger posting, and that temporary non-visibility of contributions was expected. That notice is limited to those wage months. It does not establish the reason for a later missing interest entry or prove that a particular member’s account is affected. The notice appears on EPFO’s employer information page.
Likewise, older notices and historical completion figures should not be treated as a current universal posting timetable. EPFO’s sources cited here do not establish one date by which every member’s annual interest entry must appear.
Check these account-specific causes before filing
You selected the wrong member ID
UAN access can expose more than one member account. An employer change, an uncompleted transfer or an older establishment can leave relevant transactions under a different ID. Compare the employer name and employment period for each account, then inspect the year in every plausible member ID.

A transfer or withdrawal changed the balance
Transfers and withdrawals affect the monthly running balances used under paragraph 60. Confirm that the transaction belongs to the period you are analysing and note its effective date. A withdrawal recorded in one month should not be treated as though the balance disappeared at the beginning of the year.
A contribution has not appeared yet
If the contribution itself is absent, interest cannot be reconciled from the passbook until the underlying ledger entry is available. Record the wage month, employer and expected contribution, then check whether the issue is limited to the September–October 2025 posting notice or affects another period.
The account may be subject to a Scheme exception
Paragraph 60 contains provisions concerning a written choice not to receive interest and accounts that become inoperative. Do not infer that either exception applies without checking the account history and the current Scheme wording.

The displayed entry is delayed, rather than the earning itself
EPFO’s explanation separates the timing of the passbook entry from the interest earned under monthly running balances. A delayed line therefore needs verification, not an automatic assumption of financial loss.
Separate display timing from the underlying account calculation
There are two different questions in a suspected missing-interest case: whether the account earned interest under the Scheme and whether the annual line is currently visible in the online passbook. EPFO’s parliamentary explanation concerns the second issue. It says that updating the passbook is an entry process and that the date of the entry has no actual financial bearing on the interest earned for the year.
That explanation should prevent a common mistake: treating the date shown on a website as the date on which entitlement began. It should not lead to the opposite mistake of assuming every absent line is correct. First confirm the account, year, contributions, transfers and withdrawals. Then ask EPFO to investigate if the ledger remains inconsistent.
When you check again, note the date of the check and preserve the version of the ledger you saw. A dated screenshot or downloaded passbook can show whether a contribution or interest line later appeared, while the original member ID and financial year keep the comparison tied to the correct account.
What to include in an EPFiGMS grievance
If the correct member ID and year still show an unexplained discrepancy, create a written record through EPFiGMS. EPFO lists EPFiGMS in its employee-services directory; open the current service instructions from the official For Employees page and use the live form labels shown there.

- State whether the missing item is annual interest, a contribution needed to calculate interest, a transfer or another ledger entry.
- Describe exactly what the passbook shows and what you expected to see. Include transaction dates and amounts where available.
- Explain any employer change, transfer, withdrawal or multiple-member-ID history that could affect the period.
- Attach or retain relevant passbook pages and account records if the portal permits attachments. Keep copies of everything submitted.
- Submit the grievance and save the registration or reference number. Use that number in later correspondence.
These details allow EPFO to identify the account and period without relying on a general statement such as “interest missing.” The sources reviewed do not establish a current universal response deadline or guarantee a particular outcome, so retain the reference and follow the portal’s current instructions rather than relying on an advertised time limit.
How to write a precise complaint
A useful complaint separates facts from conclusions. Instead of writing only that interest was not credited, identify the member ID, the financial year, the last visible contribution, the missing line and any relevant transaction. For example, explain that contributions are visible through a particular wage month, that the annual interest line is absent, or that a transfer is shown under a different account. State whether you checked every member ID connected with the employment history.

Use the same dates and amounts in every follow-up. If the matter involves a September or October 2025 wage month, mention that specifically because EPFO published a notice about temporary non-visibility during revamped ECR ledger posting. Do not describe that notice as proof that an unrelated year or member account has the same problem.
Keep the complaint focused on one account history. Combining several unrelated UAN issues in one narrative can make it harder to identify the affected member ID and period. If you later escalate, refer to the first registration number and explain what remains unresolved.

The official passbook page warns members not to provide Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or one-time passwords in response to unsolicited requests. It also states that EPFO never calls members or pensioners to deposit an amount. Use the official EPFO portals yourself rather than a link supplied by an unknown caller or message sender.
- Never disclose an OTP, UAN password, Aadhaar number, PAN or bank credentials to someone claiming they must “release” interest.
- Do not pay a fee or deposit to activate, unlock or credit EPF interest.
- End unsolicited calls and verify the matter through the official passbook or employee-services pages.
- If you already disclosed credentials, change the affected password through the official service and contact the relevant institution using independently verified contact details.
A practical decision path
| Situation after checking the passbook | Best next action |
|---|---|
| Correct member ID, contributions and transactions are present; only the annual interest line is delayed | Keep the record and monitor the official ledger; a delayed display entry alone does not establish lost interest |
| Transactions appear under another member ID | Review that account and any transfer history before filing a complaint |
| A contribution or transfer is missing and the period is identifiable | Document the wage month, employer, expected amount and account evidence, then use EPFiGMS |
| The ledger remains inconsistent after all member IDs and transactions are checked | Submit a detailed EPFiGMS grievance and preserve the reference number; consider CPGRAMS using current official instructions if necessary |
| Someone asks for money or authentication codes | Stop communicating, provide nothing and use only official EPFO portals |
Records to keep while the issue is open
- The UAN and affected member ID, stored securely rather than shared with an unsolicited contact.
- The financial year and each wage month involved.
- Passbook copies showing contributions, transfers, withdrawals and the missing or disputed line.
- Employment-change and transfer details that explain why more than one member ID may exist.
- The EPFiGMS registration number, submission date and any responses.
- A copy of any CPGRAMS submission if you escalate.
This record lets you describe one consistent account history instead of repeatedly reporting an unexplained balance.

Use this short review to avoid preventable delays:
- Confirm that you are on the official EPFO passbook or employee-services domain, not a look-alike page.
- Confirm the selected member ID, employer period and financial year.
- Separate a missing interest line from a missing contribution, transfer or withdrawal entry.
- Check whether the transaction falls within the September–October 2025 ECR posting notice or another period.
- Compare the rate with the formal approval for the relevant year. The confirmed figure in the cited official material is 8.25% for FY 2024–25; draft discussion for FY 2025–26 is not a final rate.
- Keep copies of the passbook and grievance submission, including the registration number.
- Remove unnecessary personal data before sharing records and never include an OTP or password in an attachment.
These checks do not replace EPFO’s account-level review, but they make it clearer whether the problem is a display delay, a misplaced transaction or a discrepancy requiring correction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a missing annual line prove that EPF interest was lost?
No. EPFO has described passbook updating as an entry process and said the date of entry has no actual financial bearing on interest earned. Verify the correct member ID, year and ledger transactions first; an unexplained inconsistency should still be reported.
Where can I check EPF interest?
Use the official EPFO Member Passbook and Claim Status service. Sign in with your UAN, password and captcha, then select the member ID connected with the employment period you are checking.
What if I have more than one member ID?
Inspect each plausible account, especially after changing employers, transferring accumulations or working at more than one establishment. Contributions, transfers or withdrawals recorded under another member ID can make one passbook appear incomplete.
What EPF interest rate applies to FY 2024–25?
EPFO’s circular dated 26 May 2025 states that the Central Government approved 8.25% for FY 2024–25 and instructed offices to credit it under paragraph 60 of the Scheme.
Is the FY 2025–26 EPF rate 8.15% or 8.30%?
That range appears in draft minutes of the 239th Central Board of Trustees meeting dated 2 March 2026 as an Investment Committee recommendation and discussion. It is not final government approval, so check EPFO’s current circulars before relying on a rate.
How does the timing of a contribution or withdrawal affect interest?
Paragraph 60 uses monthly running balances. Interest on a withdrawal runs through the last day of the month before withdrawal, while sums credited after the preceding year earn from the first day of the following month through the current year-end, subject to the Scheme wording.
What should I attach to an EPFiGMS complaint?
Identify the member ID and financial year, describe the missing interest or related entry, list relevant dates and amounts, and explain employer changes, transfers or withdrawals. Retain passbook records, the submitted text and the EPFiGMS registration number.
Recommended Free Tools
Can someone from EPFO ask for an OTP or payment to release interest?
No. The official passbook warning says not to share Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or OTPs in response to unsolicited requests and states that EPFO never calls members or pensioners to deposit an amount. Use official portals and do not pay an intermediary.
The Bottom Line
Check the official EPFO passbook using the correct member ID and financial year, and review contributions, transfers, withdrawals and the annual interest line. A late display entry does not by itself establish lost interest, but a ledger that remains inconsistent should be documented and raised through EPFiGMS, with CPGRAMS considered under current official instructions if needed. Use the formally approved rate for the relevant year, keep your records and never share OTPs or pay anyone claiming to release EPF interest.
