The company said the transaction was signed and finalized on November 6. It described the acquisition as a way to add digital-trust capabilities and extend its presence in continental Europe and Latin America; the purchase price was not disclosed.
What Safelayer added to Entrust Datacard
Safelayer developed security software and services covering several areas of digital trust:
- Public key infrastructure (PKI): technologies for managing digital certificates and certificate-based security.
- Multifactor authentication: tools to verify users through more than one factor.
- Electronic signatures and eIDAS-related trust services: capabilities for digital signing and electronic transactions in the European regulatory context.
- Data encryption and transaction protection: software intended to protect information and electronic transactions.
Entrust Datacard said these capabilities would broaden its technical portfolio, particularly its PKI and electronic trust services in EMEA and Latin America. Its chief information officer, Anudeep Parhar, said the company looked forward to bringing Safelayer’s established PKI and electronic trust services in those regions into its portfolio. That statement explains the buyer’s rationale; it does not establish the acquisition’s later commercial results. Entrust Datacard’s November 8, 2018 announcement
What was disclosed about the deal
Entrust Datacard did not disclose the purchase price or other financial terms in its announcement. It reported that Safelayer was headquartered in Barcelona, had an additional office in Madrid, and that it intended to maintain the acquired offices and employees.
