GenAI entered enterprise mobility in 2024, but it did not transform unified endpoint management overnight. The most credible early use cases were assisted scripting, endpoint-data queries, documentation, troubleshooting, and help-desk support. The bigger strategic change was UEM’s convergence with security, patching, automation, endpoint analytics, and digital employee experience (DEX).
The February 28, 2024 Computerworld feature is best read as a market snapshot. Its clearest vendor examples were previews—not proof that autonomous endpoint management had become a mature, broadly available product category.
From MDM to UEM
Enterprise mobility once primarily meant managing smartphones and tablets. The market expanded in stages:
- MDM: Enrollment, configuration, compliance policies, and remote actions for devices.
- MAM: Application distribution, app protection, and work-data controls.
- EMM: A broader combination of device, application, content, and identity management.
- UEM: Unified management for mobile devices and traditional endpoints such as Windows PCs and Macs, with some platforms also supporting specialized or IoT devices.
By 2024, UEM was increasingly being evaluated as part of a wider endpoint-operations strategy rather than as a mobile-only tool. That strategy often included patch management, endpoint security, remote support, IT service management, analytics, identity, and DEX.

What genAI was actually doing
The practical question was not whether a UEM platform had an AI label. It was whether AI could safely reduce repetitive administrative work.
| Use case | Potential value | Risk level |
|---|---|---|
| Telemetry and compliance summaries | Faster understanding of device health and policy status | Lower |
| Knowledge-base articles and help-desk responses | Quicker documentation and first-line support | Lower to moderate |
| Natural-language endpoint queries | Lets administrators investigate device data without memorizing query syntax | Moderate |
| Script and policy drafts | Accelerates routine administration | Moderate to high |
| Automated remediation | Can reduce response time for known problems | High |
Forrester analyst Andrew Hewitt identified script creation, knowledge articles, natural-language endpoint queries, and help-desk chatbots as likely UEM use cases in the Computerworld report. These capabilities are not interchangeable. Summarizing stale device data is very different from changing an access policy or running a privileged script across thousands of endpoints.
What vendors were showing in early 2024
| Vendor and product | 2024 example | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| VMware Workspace ONE UEM | GenAI-assisted script generation from administrator prompts, described as supporting PowerShell, Bash, and Python for Windows and macOS use cases | U.S. technical preview/pre-beta announced in December 2023; generated scripts required human review and modification before deployment |
| Microsoft Intune with Security Copilot | Endpoint-context analysis, operational guidance, policy assistance, and help identifying device issues | Described in November 2023 as a private preview for selected Security Copilot Early Access Program customers |
Neither example should be presented as universal 2026 availability. The Workspace ONE example also needs careful naming: VMware was acquired by Broadcom in November 2023, and its End-User Computing business later became associated with Omnissa. Current ownership, branding, licensing, supported environments, and feature availability must be checked on the current Omnissa Workspace ONE page.

Organizations were trying to reduce overlapping tools and fragmented endpoint data. A consolidated operating model can improve inventory visibility, reduce integration work, and give automation a shared data layer. Common areas of convergence included:
- Device and operating-system management
- Application deployment and patching
- Endpoint security and vulnerability information
- Remote control and support
- Endpoint analytics and DEX
- IT service management
- Policy orchestration and low-code workflows
Consolidation is not automatically better. A “single pane of glass” may combine dashboards without unifying the underlying controls. One suite may also provide shallow support for a particular operating system, create vendor lock-in, or cost more once AI, DEX, security, and patching modules are added.

DEX: useful telemetry, sensitive governance
Digital employee experience tools analyze endpoint signals such as slow startup, application crashes, connectivity problems, authentication friction, outdated software, and recurring service-desk incidents. The goal is usually to improve workplace technology and automate support—not measure employee productivity.
That intention does not eliminate privacy risk. Before deploying DEX or AI analysis, organizations should document:

- What telemetry is collected and whether it identifies an individual.
- Who can view the data and whether managers can access it.
- Retention periods, data residency, and cross-border transfers.
- Whether the data may be used for performance evaluation.
- How employees can inspect or challenge inaccurate information.
- Whether rules differ by country, worker category, or device ownership.
Corporate-owned, BYOD, COPE, contractor, shared frontline, kiosk, rugged, and privileged-administrator devices should not all receive the same monitoring or management treatment.

From UEM toward autonomous endpoint management
Autonomous endpoint management (AEM) was an emerging operating model in 2024, not a universally defined product category. The concept combines UEM controls with threat intelligence, vulnerability and patch prioritization, DEX telemetry, and assisted or automated remediation. Gartner commentary cited in the Computerworld article described AEM as largely assembled from multiple tools at that time.
- Observe: Collect and normalize endpoint, security, and experience data.
- Recommend: Suggest a policy, diagnosis, or remediation.
- Approve: Require an administrator to confirm the action.
- Execute: Apply a known, tested remediation automatically.
- Learn and optimize: Measure outcomes and improve prioritization.
The critical distinction is between automation and autonomy. A workflow that automatically restarts a failed service under tightly defined conditions is not equivalent to an AI system that independently changes security policy across an estate.

The 2024 discussion identified low-code capabilities from vendors including Ivanti and VMware as a way to connect UEM policies with broader workflows. Buyers should ask:
Best Value
- No app or device requirement: Share your dot.Profile with anyone, as others don't need an app or a dot.device to receive your information.
- Hassle-free sharing: Easily share your dot.Profile with unlimited free shares of your digital business card.
- Simple sharing process: Tap your dot.device to a compatible phone or scan the dot.Profile QR code to share your profile. Compatible with a wide range of phones.
- Update information on the go: Keep your dot.Profile up to date by easily modifying and updating your information as it changes, ensuring you always have the most accurate details.
- Privacy and security: Protect your information with dot, as no passwords are ever needed to link your social accounts. Dot uses only usernames and links to create your digital business card.
- Can workflows call external systems through APIs or webhooks?
- Are approvals, version control, testing groups, and audit logs available?
- Are actions reversible?
- How are offline devices and failed steps handled?
- Can administrators separate development, staging, and production?
- Are API limits, permissions, and failures visible to operators?
Security and AI failure modes
AI-generated endpoint actions can be syntactically valid and still be unsafe. Problems include hallucinated commands, excessive permissions, OS-version incompatibility, incorrect root-cause analysis, unsafe recommendations based on incomplete telemetry, and remediation loops that repeatedly fix the wrong condition.
Endpoint names, logs, tickets, and metadata can also contain malicious or misleading text. Treat these sources as untrusted input and assess prompt-injection risk. Sensitive information should not be placed into prompts or generated knowledge articles without appropriate controls.
For high-impact operations, organizations should use staged deployment rings, least privilege, mandatory approval, representative testing, detailed logging, and a tested rollback path. Do not begin with autonomous device wipes, identity changes, weakened security policies, broad application removal, or unreviewed privileged scripts.
How to evaluate a UEM platform

- DEX and endpoint analytics
- Remote assistance, ITSM, identity, conditional access, and security integrations
- API quality, webhooks, workflow testing, rollback, and offline behavior
- Multi-tenant, delegated-administration, reporting, and export capabilities
Privacy, migration, and economics
- BYOD privacy controls, data residency, retention, and regulatory support
- Migration tools for profiles, certificates, applications, and legacy MDM coexistence
- Per-user versus per-device licensing
- Separate charges for UEM, security, DEX, patching, and AI
- Total operating cost, including administration, integration, training, and switching costs
Relevant platforms may include Microsoft Intune, Omnissa Workspace ONE, Ivanti Neurons for UEM, IBM MaaS360, Jamf Pro, and Cisco Meraki Systems Manager. Their suitability depends on endpoint mix, existing identity and security investments, required management depth, and current commercial terms—not on brand recognition alone.
The bottom line
Enterprise mobility in 2024 was at the beginning of an AI-assisted phase. GenAI could make UEM administration faster, but previews and analyst forecasts were not the same as mature autonomous control. The more durable shift was toward combining endpoint management, patching, security, telemetry, DEX, ITSM, and carefully governed automation.
For buyers, the winning question is not “Which platform has AI?” It is “Which platform has trustworthy endpoint data, precise controls, strong governance, and measurable remediation outcomes?”
