When did the Subiaco Cancer Council shop close?
The Rokeby Road storefront closed on 22 September 2023. Although the original headline described the shop as “set to close,” the closure is complete. Cancer Council WA’s official closure notice also says the roaming SunSmart van stopped operating.
Why did Cancer Council WA close the shop and van?
Cancer Council WA attributed the decision to changes in shopping habits and wider access to sun-protection products through online sales and other retailers. In a statement reported by PerthNow on 7 September 2023, then-CEO Ashley Reid said the products were available online and at numerous locations across the state. That is the organization’s explanation for the decision, not an independently established assessment of its causes.
How long had the shops been part of Cancer Council WA?
Cancer Council WA says its first skin-cancer-prevention shop opened in West Perth in 1989 to make sun-protection merchandise affordable. The Subiaco shop opened on Rokeby Road in 1990 and remained there until its 2023 closure.

Those figures refer to the first shop, not sales at the Subiaco storefront. They are historical figures published by Cancer Council WA.
Can you still buy Cancer Council sunscreen and other products?
Yes. Cancer Council WA says its sun-protection range remains available through its online shop, pharmacies, supermarkets and department stores. Its listed product categories include sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, swimwear, sun shades and clothing. Stock and range can vary by retailer, so check with the seller for a specific item.

Did the closure end Cancer Council WA’s SunSmart programs?
No. The shop and van closure did not mean the organization’s prevention work ended. Cancer Council WA said its skin-cancer prevention programs would continue, with a focus on making sun protection part of everyday life.
Its SunSmart guidance recommends combining several measures: SPF50 or SPF50+ sunscreen, sun-protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, shade and checking the daily UV Index. The organization says these measures are most effective when used together.
