The release included standard, mini, and reasoning-focused models. xAI said Grok 3 Reasoning beat systems including OpenAI’s o3-mini-high and DeepSeek R1 on selected benchmarks; that is a company-reported claim, not proof that Grok 3 was better at every task. As of August 2026, xAI’s current pages promote newer Grok models, so Grok 3 is best understood as a significant launch rather than its current flagship.
What xAI announced
Grok 3 was a family of models developed by xAI, the company founded by Elon Musk—not a single model with one capability profile. The February 2025 launch positioned the family as a step up in mathematics, science, coding, general knowledge, instruction following, and reasoning. xAI described the release as a beta and said work and updates would continue after launch. xAI’s announcement also said the models were trained on its Colossus supercomputer using about 10 times the compute of its previous state-of-the-art models. That figure is xAI’s own claim; it is not an independent measure of model quality or an audited comparison of intelligence.
| Variant | What it was for | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Grok 3 | Full-size general-purpose model | The base model should not be conflated with the family’s reasoning variants. |
| Grok 3 mini | Smaller, more cost-efficient model | A lower-resource option, not simply another name for Grok 3. |
| Grok 3 Reasoning | Reasoning-oriented model for harder, multistep tasks | This is the variant most relevant to xAI’s comparisons with reasoning competitors. |
| Grok 3 mini Reasoning | Smaller reasoning-oriented variant | Designed to combine reasoning behavior with a more efficient model size. |
The announcement’s “reasoning” description referred to spending additional computation at response time: the model could work through subproblems, consider alternatives, or revise a line of reasoning before answering. xAI said this could take seconds to minutes. More visible deliberation does not guarantee a correct answer; accuracy, reproducibility, speed, cost, and robustness are better tests than the appearance or length of a thinking trace.
What “beats o3-mini and DeepSeek R1” means
The headline claim needs boundaries. xAI reported that Grok 3 Reasoning surpassed competing reasoning systems on several benchmarks. TechCrunch reported xAI’s claim that it outperformed OpenAI’s o3-mini-high on selected tests, including AIME 2025. That is more specific than saying an unspecified “Grok 3” beat all versions of o3-mini in general. xAI also presented comparisons involving DeepSeek R1 and other systems. The results describe selected evaluations under particular configurations, not universal superiority. TechCrunch’s launch coverage and Ars Technica’s analysis put the claims in the context of the model’s positioning and comparison limits.

Benchmarks answer narrow questions. AIME tests competition mathematics; GPQA tests graduate-level science questions; LiveCodeBench evaluates coding problems, with newer tasks intended to reduce—but not eliminate—concerns about contamination. Strong performance on these tests can indicate useful capabilities, but it does not establish dependable factual research, multilingual quality, long-form writing, visual reasoning, software maintenance, tool use, or safety. A benchmark result is also difficult to interpret without the exact model version, competitor variant, benchmark version, reasoning setting, tool access, number of attempts, scoring method, and serving conditions.
- Model and setting: Grok 3 Reasoning is not interchangeable with Grok 3 or Grok 3 mini Reasoning; likewise, o3-mini-high is a specific setting, not a synonym for every o3-mini result.
- Evaluation procedure: A single response is not directly comparable to repeated sampling or majority voting. Hidden tools, private prompts, or different context limits can change outcomes.
- Release status: Grok 3 was introduced as a beta. Subsequent training and serving changes can make launch-era behavior or scores less representative of a later version.
- Practical performance: Competition problems and coding benchmarks do not reproduce the messy requirements, changing dependencies, and review needs of real work.
Independent coverage summarized xAI’s presentation, but the launch reporting cited here does not establish a comprehensive, independently reproduced head-to-head result across everyday tasks. Treat “beats” as a claim about selected benchmark results, not a verdict on which assistant is best for a particular person or business. DeepLearning.AI’s summary also distinguishes the standard and reasoning models.

Reasoning modes and DeepSearch are different capabilities
xAI promoted Think as a mode for working through difficult problems and Big Brain as a higher-compute mode for more complex tasks. More inference computation can help with some demanding tasks, but it can also mean slower responses and greater resource use. A standard model may be more suitable for routine drafting, summaries, or simple questions where extra deliberation adds little value.
DeepSearch was a separate, search-assisted capability intended to find and synthesize information. It is not the same thing as closed-book reasoning: browsing can help with current facts, but source selection, coverage, and citation accuracy still matter. Search results can be incomplete or biased, and a fluent synthesis is not proof that its sources support every statement. xAI said DeepSearch would be released to enterprise API partners and described a roadmap that included tool use, code execution, and agent capabilities. These were launch-era plans and features, not evidence that every Grok 3 interface offered identical tools.

How Grok 3 became available
At launch, xAI offered Grok 3 through X and Grok.com, with access and usage limits tied to the rollout and subscription tier. xAI said Premium+ subscribers would receive higher limits and early access to Think and DeepSearch; access was also being extended to other Grok users with limits. The company said Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini would come to its API. Those details describe the 2025 launch, not a guarantee of present-day access to the same model or features.
In April 2025, TechCrunch reported that xAI had launched a Grok 3 API and that its listed context limit was 131,072 tokens. The report noted that this was lower than a larger context figure xAI had previously claimed for Grok 3 in another context. The difference is a reason to check the specific interface and model documentation rather than assume that chatbot and API limits matched. TechCrunch’s API report gives that launch-era figure.

What it meant for users and developers
For a user choosing an assistant, the useful comparison is task-specific, not just a leaderboard rank. Grok’s integration with X and its search capabilities may matter for workflows centered on X or current information. For a new project in 2026, however, xAI’s current product pages point to newer models rather than Grok 3. The current Grok overview, consumer pricing page, and API page should be consulted for present-day products and terms; their current offerings should not be mistaken for the original Grok 3 launch experience.
Developers should compare the currently supported model and endpoint, not assume a historical benchmark winner remains available or suitable. Relevant checks include:

As current reference points, OpenAI’s o3-mini page lists API pricing and features such as function calling and structured outputs, while DeepSeek’s pricing documentation lists rates for its current API offerings. Those pages can help compare present options, but prices and model lineups change and are not Grok 3 launch prices. See OpenAI’s o3-mini documentation and DeepSeek’s pricing documentation for their current terms.
Grok 3’s place in the model race
Grok 3 was a serious 2025 entry in the race to build reasoning models, and its launch showed xAI was competing directly with OpenAI and DeepSeek on high-profile math, science, and coding evaluations. The scale-of-compute figure, reasoning modes, and benchmark claims helped define the launch, but none alone proves that the model was consistently superior or more useful across real workloads. By August 2026, newer Grok models had displaced Grok 3 as xAI’s current offering. The original “beats” claim is therefore most useful as a dated account of xAI’s launch positioning, read with the model variants and evaluation conditions in view.
