Re:

Elon Musk’s xAI Bought X: What It Means for Your Data, DMs, and Grok

xAI acquired X in 2025, and SpaceX later acquired their parent company. Here is what the deal means for your X account, public posts, Grok data, privacy settings, and private messages.

Short answer: xAI acquired X on March 28, 2025, bringing the social network and AI company under common ownership. On February 2, 2026, SpaceX acquired their parent company, X.AI Holdings Corp. For most users, this did not automatically create a new account, change a subscription, or require a new login. The more important change is structural: X’s public posts, engagement data, and Grok interactions are now strategically connected to xAI’s AI business.

X’s current documentation says public X data and interactions with Grok—including prompts, voice inputs, transcriptions, and results—may be shared with xAI for training, fine-tuning, and personalization. You can disable some of those uses, but opting out is not the same as deleting all historical data or undoing possible use in already-trained models. Ordinary X DMs should not be treated as end-to-end encrypted. For highly sensitive conversations, use a purpose-built secure messenger such as Signal.

What happened to X and xAI?

On March 28, 2025, Elon Musk announced that his artificial-intelligence company, xAI, had acquired his social-media company, X, in an all-stock transaction. The companies were placed under a new parent, X.AI Holdings Corp. Musk said the transaction valued xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion in equity value, or $45 billion when approximately $12 billion of X debt was included. TechCrunch reported the transaction details, while the Associated Press explained the distinction between X’s equity value and its value including debt.

That is the historical transaction. The current ownership picture is later and more complicated: SpaceX acquired X.AI Holdings effective February 2, 2026. In other words, xAI did buy X in 2025, but X and xAI are now within the broader SpaceX corporate group through the later transaction. X and xAI continue to present separate consumer products and separate public-facing policies. The effective dates and structure are described in an SEC filing from SpaceX.

The privacy settings and product paths below were checked against the supplied X documentation on August 9, 2026. Labels can change with an app redesign, language, account type, or geography.

The deal was a corporate transaction—not a sale of your personal account

The acquisition changed who controlled the companies. It did not mean that individual users sold their accounts, received shares, or had to sign up for an xAI account. The transaction itself did not automatically require a new X login, cancel an X subscription, migrate old posts to a different service, or make every X feature part of one combined application.

It is also important not to treat the announced valuation as if X had been sold in a public-market transaction. Both companies were privately held. The $33 billion figure was the value attributed to X’s equity; the approximately $45 billion figure included debt. Those figures were part of an all-stock transaction between companies controlled by Musk, not a freely traded market price established by thousands of independent buyers and sellers. Adding the announced $80 billion and $45 billion figures does not create a meaningful public-market valuation for the combined business.

The transaction also did not prove that X had recovered the $44 billion Musk paid for Twitter in 2022. A privately negotiated valuation between commonly controlled companies is not independent evidence of what the entire business could have fetched in an arm’s-length sale.

Timeline: from xAI’s acquisition of X to SpaceX ownership

  1. March 28, 2025: Musk announced that xAI had acquired X in an all-stock transaction. The companies were organized under X.AI Holdings Corp. Musk’s announcement is available on X.
  2. March 2025: X and xAI became subsidiaries of X.AI Holdings Corp., as reflected in a SEC-filed proxy document.
  3. February 2, 2026: SpaceX acquired X.AI Holdings, bringing X and xAI into the broader SpaceX corporate group. See the SpaceX SEC filing.

Why combine a social network with an AI company?

The confirmed strategic rationale is a combination of X’s data and distribution with xAI’s models, computing infrastructure, and technical staff. The companies described the transaction as bringing together data, models, compute, distribution, and talent. That gives xAI a large consumer platform on which to deploy Grok and gives X a closer connection to AI-generated search, summaries, recommendations, moderation, media tools, and creator features.

The strategic loop looks like this:

  1. X produces a real-time stream of public posts, replies, links, images, videos, and engagement signals.
  2. Grok can analyze, summarize, search, or respond to that current information.
  3. X distributes Grok features directly to its existing users on the web and mobile apps.
  4. User prompts, feedback, and interactions can create additional personalization and product-development signals, subject to the applicable settings and policies.
  5. AI-generated outputs can influence what users read, share, search for, and post next.

Current company materials describe X as a real-time information and distribution platform for xAI. A SpaceX prospectus cites approximately 350 million daily posts as a source of current information. That is a company disclosure, not an independently audited measurement, so it should be understood as the group’s description of X’s scale. See the SpaceX prospectus.

It is reasonable to infer that the merger also gives xAI a built-in distribution channel and a large supply of behavioral signals. It is not established by the transaction alone that the deal was solely a bailout of X, a way to avoid creditors, or a plan to inflate xAI’s valuation. Those are interpretations or criticisms, not proven motives. Axios discussed the overlapping ownership and possible financial implications without establishing a single definitive motive.

What changes for an ordinary X user?

Changes you may notice

  • More prominent Grok features inside X.
  • AI-generated summaries, search answers, recommendations, image tools, video tools, and content analysis.
  • More personalization based on your X activity and interactions with Grok.
  • Closer integration between X features and xAI products.
  • New AI-based tools for creators, businesses, advertisers, accessibility, moderation, and customer support.

X’s help documentation says Grok is available on X’s iOS, Android, and web products wherever X is available. Product availability, pricing, and feature access can vary, so the acquisition alone should not be read as a promise that every user will receive every Grok feature or that every feature will remain free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Things that did not automatically change

  • You were not automatically required to create a new xAI account.
  • Your X account credentials did not automatically change.
  • The acquisition did not automatically delete or migrate your existing posts.
  • Every X user did not automatically become a paid Grok subscriber.
  • The deal did not establish that every ordinary X DM is fed into model training.
  • X and xAI did not become one indistinguishable consumer app overnight.

The practical effects depend on later product releases and the policies in force when you use the service. The ownership change matters because it makes deeper integration more likely; it does not, by itself, answer every question about a particular data category.

What data can X and xAI use for AI?

X’s current privacy policy says X may use information it collects, along with publicly available information, to help train machine-learning and AI models. It also permits sharing with affiliates and transferring information in connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganization, asset sale, or bankruptcy.

X’s Grok help page is more specific about the information it may share with xAI. It identifies public X data, public metadata, public profiles and Spaces, and interactions with Grok—including text inputs, voice inputs, transcriptions or translations, and generated results. X says these materials may be used to train or fine-tune Grok and other generative AI models, and may be used for Grok personalization.

xAI’s separate privacy policy also says its service uses public X posts, engagement information such as followers, views, likes, reposts, shares, and replies, internet search results, and other publicly available information. Public posts can contain personal information even when the poster did not intend for them to become AI-training material.

Data type What the current documentation says Practical takeaway
Public posts X says public X data may be shared with xAI and used for Grok training or fine-tuning. Treat anything posted publicly as potential AI-training material, not as private writing.
Engagement metadata Policies refer to signals such as views, likes, reposts, shares, replies, followers, and related activity. Your behavior can contribute to personalization, recommendations, analytics, and model inputs.
Grok prompts and results Interactions, inputs, and results may be shared with xAI for training, fine-tuning, and personalization. Do not enter confidential information into Grok unless you have evaluated the applicable controls and terms.
Voice data Voice inputs and voice transcriptions or translations may be shared with xAI. Voice is not automatically more private than typed text.
Ordinary Direct Messages X’s documentation indicates that X handles DM contents and related information. It does not establish that every ordinary DM is used to train Grok. Do not treat a normal X DM as equivalent to an end-to-end encrypted private messenger.
Encrypted Chat X describes encryption under specific conditions, while metadata such as the recipient and creation time remains unencrypted. Message requests are unencrypted until accepted. Check that the conversation is actually encrypted, and do not send its contents to Grok if you want the encryption protection to continue.
Protected posts X says protected posts are not publicly visible and are not used to train Grok’s underlying models or surfaced in response to user queries. Useful for reducing future exposure, but it cannot undo screenshots, reposts, archives, or earlier public access.

Does xAI have access to every X message?

There is not enough support for saying that xAI can use every message flowing through X or that all ordinary DMs are being used to train Grok. That broad claim goes beyond what the cited public documentation specifically establishes.

At the same time, ordinary X DMs should not be treated as highly confidential. X’s policies describe the company collecting usage information that includes the contents of Direct Messages, recipients, and timestamps. X may share information with affiliates under its privacy policy, but its public Grok documentation specifically identifies public X data and Grok interactions rather than making an unconditional statement that all ordinary DMs are training data.

The careful conclusion is this: the acquisition does not prove that every ordinary DM is used to train Grok, but ordinary X DMs are not a substitute for an end-to-end encrypted messenger. For passwords, financial information, medical details, legal documents, confidential business material, unpublished reporting, or source identities, use another service.

How to reduce Grok data use on X

The following paths reflect X’s documented settings as checked on August 9, 2026. On some devices, you may need to open your profile menu before reaching Settings and privacy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Opt out of Grok training and fine-tuning

  1. Open Settings and privacy.
  2. Select Privacy & Safety.
  3. Open Data sharing and personalization.
  4. Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
  5. Under Data Sharing, disable Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.

X says you can continue using Grok on X after opting out. This setting addresses model creation and fine-tuning; it does not stop every form of service operation, personalization, safety processing, or other platform data use. X also says that submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may allow the associated conversation to be used for training even after you have opted out.

2. Disable Grok personalization

  1. Go to Settings and privacy.
  2. Select Privacy & Safety.
  3. Open Data sharing and personalization.
  4. Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
  5. Under Grok Personalization, disable Allow X to personalize your experience with Grok.

This is a separate control from model-training opt-out. Turning off personalization does not necessarily turn off training, and turning off training does not necessarily stop every type of personalization or platform processing.

3. Delete Grok conversation history

  1. Open Settings and privacy.
  2. Select Privacy & Safety.
  3. Open Data sharing and personalization.
  4. Select Grok.
  5. Choose Delete Conversation History and confirm.

X says deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days, unless retention is required for legal, security, or similar reasons. This is not a promise that information has been removed from every copy, backup, recipient account, or model that may already have incorporated it. X’s documentation does not promise to untrain an already-trained model.

4. Protect your posts

  1. Go to Settings and privacy.
  2. Select Privacy & Safety.
  3. Choose Audience and tagging.
  4. Enable Protect your posts.

According to X’s Grok documentation, protected posts are not publicly visible and are not used to train Grok’s underlying models or returned in response to user queries. However, existing followers can still see them, and anyone who can see a post can potentially capture or redistribute it. Protecting your account also does not erase posts that were previously public or copies made by other people and services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What opting out does—and does not—do

These controls are useful, but they are narrower than a general privacy switch.

  • Opting out is not historical deletion. It does not necessarily remove information already collected or copied.
  • Deleting a Grok conversation is not model untraining. X gives a deletion window and exceptions, but does not promise to reverse changes to model weights.
  • Opting out does not stop all X processing. X still needs to operate the service, prevent abuse, handle security, comply with law, and process account and usage information.
  • Deployed AI features may still process normal use. X says an opt-out from model creation and fine-tuning does not prevent a deployed Grok-powered feature, such as recommendations, from learning from normal use.
  • Public content remains difficult to retract. Posts can be screenshotted, reposted, indexed, quoted, archived, or stored by third parties.
  • Feedback can receive separate treatment. Thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback may cause the associated conversation to be used for training even after an opt-out.

The most defensible way to think about the setting is: it reduces specified future use for training and fine-tuning; it does not guarantee that your information disappears from every system or that an AI model forgets it.

Are X DMs private and secure?

Ordinary X DMs should not be used for highly sensitive communication. Calling a message a Direct Message does not mean it has the same protections as a purpose-built end-to-end encrypted service.

X offers a separate encrypted Chat feature, but its protection depends on the conversation and participants meeting X’s requirements. According to X’s Chat documentation:

Privacy and regulatory issues in the EU, EEA, and UK

Users in Europe may have additional rights and may be affected by regulatory proceedings that do not apply in the same way to U.S. users.

European Union and European Economic Area

On April 11, 2025, Ireland’s Data Protection Commission opened an inquiry into X’s processing of publicly accessible posts from EU and EEA users for training generative AI models, particularly Grok. The inquiry includes questions about lawfulness and transparency. An inquiry is an investigation, not a final finding that the company violated the law. See the DPC announcement.

The DPC had also taken urgent action in 2024 concerning X’s processing of EU and EEA user data for Grok training. Those proceedings ended after X agreed to continue complying with an undertaking, including deleting the relevant dataset. That resolution should not be described as a final ruling that all future X or xAI processing is lawful. Read the DPC’s 2024 update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In February 2026, the DPC also opened an investigation into X and xAI related to potentially harmful, non-consensual sexualized imagery involving Grok, including concerns involving children. See the DPC announcement.

United Kingdom

On February 3, 2026, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office announced formal investigations into X Internet Unlimited Company and xAI concerning personal-data processing connected with Grok and reports of non-consensual sexualized images, including images involving children. The ICO said it had not reached a conclusion on whether the law had been violated. Read the ICO announcement.

These proceedings matter because they show that the consequences of AI integration extend beyond abstract questions about training data. They include transparency, lawful processing, personal images, consent, and the possibility of harmful manipulated content. But an investigation is not the same as an enforcement decision or a final violation finding.

Potential benefits of the X–xAI relationship

The merger is not automatically harmful for every user. A single social-and-AI ecosystem could provide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Faster access to current information through X’s live public conversations.
  • Improved search, translation, summarization, writing, and accessibility tools.
  • More useful assistance based on a user’s interests.
  • Better spam, fraud, and abuse detection.
  • Integrated tools for creators, businesses, advertisers, and publishers.
  • A direct distribution channel for new xAI features.

Those are potential benefits and strategic objectives, not guaranteed results. The same integration that may improve relevance can also increase profiling, bias, dependency on one corporate group, and the damage caused by a security or governance failure.

The main risks for users

Data concentration

One corporate group can now connect a major social network, public posts, engagement signals, Grok interactions and outputs, recommendation systems, AI models, deployment channels, and large-scale computing infrastructure. That concentration can make the products more integrated, but it also puts more information and decision-making power under common control.

Privacy ambiguity

X and xAI still describe separate services and policies, with references to affiliates, third-party collaborators, and different data categories. Common ownership does not automatically erase those legal distinctions. It can, however, make the practical relationship harder for users to understand—especially when a feature appears inside X but is powered by xAI.

Feedback loops and bias

If Grok learns from X discourse and then summarizes, ranks, recommends, or generates content that users see on X, a feedback loop can develop:

  1. Public X content influences Grok.
  2. Grok outputs influence what users read and share.
  3. User behavior creates new engagement and personalization signals.
  4. Those signals influence future recommendations or model development.

This is a systems risk, not proof that a particular political or ideological outcome is inevitable. It does mean that errors, popularity effects, coordinated manipulation, and existing biases could be amplified if they are not detected and corrected.

Sensitive-image abuse

The 2026 Irish and UK investigations illustrate a concrete risk: real people’s images and personal data can be used to create manipulated or sexualized content. The investigations remain unresolved, but users—especially parents, journalists, activists, and people in vulnerable situations—should think carefully before uploading identifying images or personal information to Grok.

Who should be especially cautious?

  • Journalists: Do not enter source identities, unpublished reporting, or confidential documents into Grok.
  • Businesses: Establish a rule against using consumer AI accounts for trade secrets, customer data, internal strategy, or proprietary code unless the organization has approved the service and its terms.
  • Doctors, lawyers, financial professionals, and government workers: Treat client, patient, case, taxpayer, and government information as confidential unless your organization has explicitly assessed the tool.
  • Creators: Understand that public posts, media, engagement information, and interactions may be processed under X’s and xAI’s applicable terms.
  • Parents: Avoid submitting children’s images or personal information to Grok. The cited regulatory investigations specifically include concerns involving children and sexualized manipulated imagery.
  • Privacy-conscious users: Remember that a private account, an opt-out, or deleting a conversation each addresses only part of the overall data picture.

What should you do?

If you want to keep using X casually

  • Assume public posts may be used as AI-training material.
  • Disable Grok training and fine-tuning if you do not want your eligible public data and Grok interactions used for those purposes.
  • Disable Grok personalization separately if you do not want X to personalize your Grok experience.
  • Delete old Grok conversation history if appropriate.
  • Do not enter passwords, authentication codes, medical records, financial information, legal documents, or confidential work into Grok.
  • Review connected third-party applications and revoke access you no longer need.
  • Recheck settings after major X or Grok updates.

If you post professionally

Decide whether the reach and distribution benefits of a public X account outweigh the loss of control over copies, indexing, and platform processing. For an employer or business, create written rules for staff use of Grok rather than relying on employees to make individual privacy judgments.

If you use X for private messaging

Move highly sensitive conversations to Signal or another purpose-built secure messenger. If you use X’s encrypted Chat, verify that encryption is active, confirm that the conversation is not merely an unaccepted message request, remember that metadata remains available, and do not forward the content to Grok.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want maximum control

  1. Do not submit sensitive content to Grok.
  2. Do not publish sensitive content publicly.
  3. Disable model-training and personalization controls.
  4. Delete Grok conversation history.
  5. Protect posts if public visibility is unnecessary.
  6. Revoke unnecessary third-party app access.
  7. Use a dedicated secure messenger for private communication.
  8. Consider leaving X if you fundamentally object to its ownership, data practices, moderation approach, or AI integration.

Leaving X can stop future activity on the platform, but it does not guarantee that historical public posts, screenshots, reposts, archives, or information already shared with other people and services will disappear.

The finance takeaway

For an X user, the transaction is less about an immediate charge and more about the economics of data and distribution. The announced all-stock deal gave xAI a large audience and a real-time information source, while giving X a closer route to AI features and potential new revenue products. It did not automatically change your subscription price or turn you into an investor.

Your practical trade-off is straightforward: more integrated AI features may provide convenience, but they also create more opportunities for your public activity, engagement behavior, and Grok conversations to be processed within a closely connected corporate group. The right response is not necessarily to delete your account. It is to decide which kinds of information you are willing to exchange for convenience and reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does xAI own all my X data now?

No. Common ownership does not mean that xAI has unlimited ownership of every piece of information or that every data category is used in the same way. X’s current documentation says public X data and Grok interactions may be shared with xAI for training, fine-tuning, and personalization. X also says it may share information with affiliates and in connection with ownership changes. Ordinary DMs require more careful qualification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are ordinary X DMs end-to-end encrypted?

Do not assume so. X offers a separate encrypted Chat feature under specific conditions, but message requests are unencrypted until accepted and metadata remains unencrypted. Ordinary X DMs should not be used for highly sensitive conversations.

Does turning off Grok training delete my old data?

No. The training opt-out limits the specified use for model creation and fine-tuning, but it is not a general deletion request. X does not promise that information already incorporated into a trained model will be removed.

Does deleting Grok history remove conversations immediately?

X says deleted Grok conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days, subject to legal, security, or similar retention requirements. That does not guarantee removal from backups, other users’ copies, third-party archives, or already-trained models.

Should I leave X because xAI bought it?

That depends on your priorities. Casual users may choose to stay while limiting sensitive posts, disabling relevant Grok controls, and using another messenger for private conversations. Users with strict privacy, professional confidentiality, or objections to the platform’s ownership and AI integration may reasonably decide to leave. Leaving does not erase historical public copies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: xAI’s 2025 acquisition of X—and SpaceX’s 2026 acquisition of their parent—did not require an immediate account or subscription change. It did make X’s data and distribution more strategically valuable to Grok. Keep using X if its benefits are worth that trade-off, but disable Grok training and personalization if desired, delete conversation history, protect posts that do not need to be public, and never use ordinary X DMs or Grok for information that must remain confidential.
