America PAC canvassers in Michigan were fired on October 30, 2024, hours after WIRED published a report about their working conditions, according to the magazine’s follow-up. WIRED reported that some workers were still owed money and some had no way home. The workers were canvassing through Blitz Canvassing, an America PAC subcontractor—not as employees directly hired by Elon Musk.
Why were America PAC canvassers fired in Michigan?
In its November 3, 2024 follow-up, WIRED reported that Tyra Muldrow and roughly a dozen other canvassers were dismissed on October 30, hours after the outlet’s initial story appeared. Muldrow said they received little explanation beyond a complaint that someone had spoken with the press. WIRED said it reviewed supporting material for its account.
The timing and the reported explanation connect the firings to concern about press contact, but they are not a legal finding about the reason for the dismissals. A representative for Musk and America PAC did not return WIRED’s request for comment, according to the outlet.
What did canvassers say about the work?
WIRED’s October 30 initial report said workers described being flown to Michigan for campaign work without initially understanding that the assignment supported Donald Trump. They also told WIRED they were driven between Detroit-area neighborhoods in U-Haul vans without seats, and that payment for lodging was threatened if they failed to meet canvassing quotas.

Targets and lodging allegations
WIRED reported that the contract set an expected engagement rate of 17 to 22 percent and that canvassers were told to reach more than 1,000 doors a week. The outlet described interviews, contract language, audio and video in its reporting. These details are reported accounts and contract terms, not an independent government finding that the workers’ allegations were legally established.
What the subcontractor said about the vans
Blitz Canvassing representative Tim Pollard told WIRED: “Our subcontractors never should have driven their canvassers in a U-Haul van, and those involved were immediately reprimanded.” That response addresses the reported transportation practice; it does not resolve the other allegations about recruitment, quotas, lodging, pay or dismissal.
Were the workers left stranded or unpaid?
WIRED’s November 3 account said many of the fired canvassers were still owed money. Muldrow said she had to find her own way home, while other workers remained stranded in Michigan. Those circumstances are the specific basis for describing workers as abandoned; the report does not establish how much money was owed to each person or when any outstanding payments were made.
Who hired the canvassers, and how much was paid?
WIRED and the Michigan Advance identified Blitz Canvassing as a subcontractor working for America PAC. The reporting therefore describes a PAC-to-subcontractor arrangement; it does not show that Musk personally hired or fired these workers.

That is the reported amount paid to the subcontractor, not the amount paid to the Michigan canvassers.
How does this compare with other reporting on America PAC?
The Michigan Advance also noted a separate Michigan Secretary of State investigation into America PAC’s voter-data collection practices. That investigation concerned data collection; the cited reporting does not establish that it adjudicated the canvassers’ working-condition allegations.

Reuters’ contemporaneous report discussed outreach-target problems and alleged falsification of contact figures in Wisconsin and Nevada. Those reports concern other states and are not evidence that Michigan workers falsified canvassing records.
In later retrospective coverage, the Associated Press reported that the firings followed the WIRED story and led to a lawsuit against America PAC. AP also cited a person familiar with the group’s spending who estimated that America PAC spent around $200 million to help elect Trump. That estimate is separate from the reported payment to Blitz and is not a Michigan canvassing figure.

What is established about the legal outcome?
The sources cited here establish that AP referred to a lawsuit against America PAC, but they do not establish its final disposition or a final legal finding on the Michigan labor allegations. They also do not establish a subsequent substantive response from America PAC or Musk. The reported claims about recruitment, transport, quotas, lodging, pay and retaliation should therefore be understood as allegations and attributed accounts, alongside Pollard’s specific acknowledgment about the U-Haul vans.
