On April 22, 2025, Elon Musk said he expected to spend significantly less time on the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) starting in May, while shifting attention back to his companies. He did not quit that day: he said he might continue government work one or two days a week if President Donald Trump wanted him to. Musk left government in late May, and DOGE was reported to have disbanded in December 2025, before its stated mandate expired.
What did Musk announce about DOGE and Tesla?
Musk made the announcement on Tesla’s April 22, 2025, earnings call. He said, “I think starting probably next month, in May, my time allocation to DOGE will drop significantly.” He added that he expected to continue spending “a day or two per week on government matters” for as long as Trump wanted and the work remained useful. Reuters’ account of the call described Musk as saying the major work of establishing DOGE was done.
That was an announcement of reduced hours, not an immediate resignation. Reuters reported that Musk’s 130-day special-government-employee term was expected to expire around late May. The announcement also came amid investor concern about his attention to Tesla and backlash over his political activity. Those were reported pressures, not proof that any one factor alone prompted his decision.
Tesla’s business provided context for investors’ concern: its first-quarter 2025 revenue was $19.3 billion, down 9% year over year, according to Axios. That result does not establish that Musk’s DOGE work caused the decline.

What savings did DOGE claim, and what did outside reviews find?
DOGE’s website estimated $160 billion in taxpayer savings on April 22, 2025. Reuters reported that the calculations included errors, corrections and incomplete explanations. By the time Musk left government in late May, the site claimed $175 billion. Reuters reported that the supporting details posted on the site added up to less than half of that amount. Reuters’ late-May report also described a separate measure: its review of Treasury summaries found roughly $19 billion less combined spending at agencies targeted by DOGE than in the same period a year earlier, about 0.5% of total federal expenditures.

The figures should not be treated as competing estimates of the same thing. DOGE’s website presented cumulative savings, while Reuters compared spending at targeted agencies with the prior-year period. The measures differ in method, scope and period, and Reuters said the public supporting detail for DOGE’s claim was incomplete.

How many federal workers left?
Reuters’ review of agency departures found nearly 260,000 departures from a federal civilian workforce of about 2.3 million. The departures were largely through firings, buyouts and early-retirement offers; the figure is not a count of layoffs alone. It is a workforce tally reported around Musk’s late-May departure, not a measure of budget savings. Reuters’ report provides the underlying context.
When did Musk leave, and did DOGE end?
Musk left government in late May 2025 after a four-month stint. At his departure, he said, “This is not the end of DOGE but really the beginning.” He also said downsizing the government had been harder than expected. Those were his statements at the time; they did not establish how long DOGE would continue as an organization.

Later reporting pointed to a different outcome. In November 2025, Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor was reported as saying DOGE “doesn’t exist.” TechCrunch reported that Kupor said DOGE’s principles were continuing under the U.S. Digital Service, distinguishing the organization from work or ideas that could persist elsewhere. In December, Reuters reported Kupor said DOGE had disbanded with eight months remaining on its mandate. Reuters’ report described the later status of the centralized entity, not a claim that every related policy or function stopped.

How did Musk judge DOGE afterward?
In a December 2025 podcast appearance, Musk said, “We were a little bit successful. We were somewhat successful.” He also said he would not lead DOGE again and that he would instead have worked on his companies. The Associated Press reported that he referred to Tesla car burnings as a consequence of the backlash to his political role. These are Musk’s retrospective comments, not an independent assessment of DOGE’s results. The Associated Press account and Reuters’ report cover his remarks. AP also reported Musk’s claim that DOGE had avoided $200 billion a year in “zombie payments”; that figure is his claim, not a verified savings result.
