Elon Musk to Leave Government After Criticizing Trump Spending Bill

Elon Musk criticized the House-passed Trump bill on May 27, 2025, and announced the end of his scheduled government service the next day. The timing drew attention, but he publicly cited his scheduled service ending rather than saying the bill caused his departure.

Elon Musk criticized the House-passed Trump-backed tax and spending bill on May 27, 2025, saying it would increase the deficit and undermine DOGE’s work. The next day, he announced that his scheduled service as a Special Government Employee was ending. His public explanation was that his scheduled time had concluded; contemporaneous reporting placed the departure amid a dispute over the bill but did not establish that the bill alone caused it.

What Musk said about the bill

In a May 27 interview with CBS News, Musk said: “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.” He added: “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both. My personal opinion.”

At the time, the House had passed the measure, but it still needed Senate approval. As described by CBS, it would extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, increase border-security spending, impose Medicaid work requirements, and roll back clean-energy tax credits. It was not yet law.

Why Musk said he was leaving government

On May 28, Musk posted on X that his scheduled time as a Special Government Employee was coming to an end. In the post, quoted by Ars Technica, he wrote: “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.” He also wrote: “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

Reuters reported that a White House official confirmed Musk’s departure and that his 130-day mandate was set to expire around May 30, 2025. Executive-branch special government employees are generally limited to 130 days of service in a 365-day period, according to Ars Technica.

The timing followed Musk’s criticism, and Reuters reported that White House aides were upset by his comments. But Reuters also said the precise circumstances were not immediately clear and reported that the departure was decided at a senior staff level. The available reporting therefore supports describing the exit as occurring after the criticism, not as a departure Musk explicitly said the bill had caused.

How the bill’s projected deficit effect compared with DOGE’s claims

The dispute involved different kinds of figures that should not be treated as directly comparable. CBS and the Associated Press reported a Congressional Budget Office estimate that the bill’s tax provisions would add $3.8 trillion to deficits through 2034. That was a projection for those tax provisions over a defined period—not a figure supplied by Musk or a measure of DOGE’s results.

Reuters reported that DOGE claimed $175 billion in savings, but said it could not independently verify that estimate. Separately, Reuters’ review of agency departures estimated that nearly 12%—about 260,000—of the 2.3 million-strong federal civilian workforce had left. Reuters said those departures largely involved threats of firing, buyouts, and early-retirement offers. The workforce figure describes reported departures, not verified budget savings.

Reuters also reported that Musk had set a campaign-trail target of cutting federal spending by at least $2 trillion. That was a goal, not an achieved saving. These figures differ in source, method, and time horizon, so they do not by themselves show whether DOGE met its target or what the bill’s eventual fiscal effect would be.

What was planned for DOGE after Musk

Reuters reported that the White House planned for DOGE’s restructuring effort to continue after Musk, while expecting department heads to seek more control over budgets and staffing. That was a stated plan and a reported expectation; it does not establish that the initiative’s work or influence continued unchanged.

At a Cabinet meeting, Musk described DOGE’s role as “humble tech support” helping fix government computer systems, according to the official transcript. That was Musk’s characterization of the team’s work, not independent evidence of its results.
