The pickup marked the start of delivery for a novelty product that had been offered for $500 apiece and had sold out months earlier—not the beginning of a new sale.
What happened on June 9, 2018?
Musk posted, “First 1000 Boring Company Flamethrowers being picked up today!” GeekWire reproduced the post and reported that customers lined up in Los Angeles. CBS reported that the first 1,000 units were distributed in Southern California that weekend. Engadget also covered the initial customer handoff.
The June event was the first pickup tranche, not the entire production run. Contemporary reports described an offering of 20,000 units. The distinction matters: the 1,000 figure refers to customers picking up units that day, while 20,000 refers to the reported total offering.
How many were sold, and what did they cost?
The Boring Company offered the product for $500 per unit in January 2018. TechCrunch reported that all 20,000 had sold out by January 31–February 1, within days of the sale beginning on January 27. On that basis, TechCrunch calculated $10 million in committed funds from pre-orders; that figure is not a statement of profit.

Why was it called “Not a Flamethrower”?
In a June 9 post reproduced by GeekWire, Musk said the product had been renamed “Not a Flamethrower” because of regulatory and customs rules aimed at restricting transport of anything called a flamethrower. That is Musk’s stated explanation for the name, not a legal determination that the device did or did not qualify as a flamethrower in every jurisdiction.

Contemporary coverage also discussed California rules and political criticism. GeekWire described the then-applicable threshold it reported for flames extending more than 10 feet, as well as a legislative effort that failed. CBS reported that California Assemblyman Miguel Santiago criticized the sale and threatened legislation, but its report did not establish what ultimately happened to that proposal. These accounts describe 2018 reporting, not current legal advice.
What came with the product?
Musk wrote that each unit came with a Boring Company-branded fire extinguisher. TechCrunch reported that the extinguisher had previously been listed separately as a $30 add-on. The sources do not provide independently verified technical specifications, fuel details, or a safety certification for the device or extinguisher.

The contemporaneous reports establish a 2018 limited-run sale and pickup story. They do not establish current inventory, resale listings, shipping availability by destination, or the product’s present legal status. Musk said in a June 10 post reproduced by GeekWire, “The honest-to-goodness fun value is amazing & we’re never going to make them again.” That was his statement at the time; the reviewed reports do not verify current resale availability.
