On March 28, 2024, Elon Musk announced that X accounts with more than 2,500 verified subscriber followers would receive X Premium features free, while accounts with more than 5,000 would receive Premium+ features free. That was an announcement, not a complete, permanent eligibility rule. X has not publicly documented in the sources available here how the threshold was measured, how long access lasted, or whether the offer remained active in 2026.
What Musk announced
Musk’s post said accounts with over 2,500 verified subscriber followers would get Premium features at no cost, and accounts with over 5,000 would get Premium+ features. The wording was reported contemporaneously by SlashGear and India Today. Musk’s original post is at x.com/elonmusk/status/1773139251507310880.
The important qualifier is verified subscriber followers. The announcement did not say that every account with 2,500 total followers—or even 2,500 merely verified followers—would qualify.
What “verified subscriber followers” means
| Count | What it includes | Does it satisfy Musk’s wording? |
|---|---|---|
| Total followers | Everyone who follows the account | No |
| Verified followers | Followers X counts as verified | Not necessarily |
| Verified subscriber followers | Followers who subscribe to the account through X’s paid subscription system and are counted as verified | Yes, according to the announcement |
X’s developer data dictionary separately lists verified_followers_count and identifies Premium subscription types, providing useful terminology but not a detailed rulebook for this giveaway: X data dictionary.

A blue checkmark alone does not prove that a follower is a paid subscriber. The two statuses should not be treated as interchangeable.
Premium and Premium+ were different tiers
The thresholds pointed to two different products:
- More than 2,500 verified subscriber followers: free access to Premium features.
- More than 5,000 verified subscriber followers: free access to Premium+ features.
Premium+ was not simply a relabeling of the first threshold; it was the higher subscription tier, with additional benefits. X’s purchaser terms describe multiple tiers and state that features, prices and availability can change: X purchaser terms.
What recipients were promised
At the time, X described Premium as including features such as longer posts and videos, editing, bookmarks, audio and video calls, prioritized rankings, verification-related benefits, creator monetization tools and access to X Pro. X’s historical company description is available at X’s 2023 Premium overview.

Contemporaneous coverage associated the higher Premium+ tier with more extensive ad removal and additional Grok access. Those are historical descriptions, not guarantees that every feature remained unchanged or was available everywhere. Feature access could depend on tier, country, operating system and rollout status.
Was access automatic?
Contemporaneous reporting said eligible accounts were expected to receive access automatically. However, no clear public guide established when X would count followers, whether it used a snapshot or rolling measurement, whether access appeared immediately, or what happened after a count fell below a threshold.
The announcement also used “over 2,500” and “over 5,000.” Literally, an account exactly at 2,500 or 5,000 would not exceed the stated threshold, although X did not publish an operational explanation.

Did users need to pay or add a card?
The offer was described as free access rather than a conventional trial requiring payment. X’s terms explain that ordinary Premium subscriptions are recurring paid services and that promotions can have separate conditions; those general terms do not prove the billing mechanics of Musk’s specific announcement.
If an account appears eligible, check the official Premium settings while logged in. Do not enter a password, recovery code or payment details into a third-party “activation” form.

Did it apply worldwide?
The announcement was broad in wording, but X’s terms say Premium features may vary by geographic location and operating system. Differences can therefore arise between web, iOS and Android, as well as between countries, account types and product rollouts. A free entitlement would not necessarily make every feature available on every device.

What Musk’s policy did—and did not—change
X had moved from its legacy verification system toward subscription-based Premium verification. Giving qualifying accounts Premium benefits without requiring the account owner to subscribe fit that newer model; it did not restore the old system in which a blue check generally signaled identity or notability. A checkmark should not be treated as independent proof of either.
X and Musk did not provide a confirmed public explanation for the policy. It could reasonably have rewarded accounts attracting paying subscribers, encouraged creators to use X’s subscription ecosystem and increased the perceived value of Premium, but those are interpretations rather than stated reasons.

There is no durable public eligibility guide in the cited material confirming that the March 2024 offer continued unchanged through August 18, 2026. X’s current terms allow tiers, features, prices and geographic availability to change, and promotions may carry separate restrictions.

Do not assume that a large following currently produces free Premium. The only reliable present-day indication would be an entitlement shown inside your logged-in X account or in current official X documentation.
Common eligibility problems
- Counting 2,500 total followers instead of verified subscriber followers.
- Counting verified accounts that do not subscribe.
- Assuming an exact threshold qualifies when the wording says “over.”
- Expecting access to be permanent or transferable.
- Expecting every Premium or Premium+ feature on every app and in every country.
- Assuming a free-access notice guarantees monetization income or increased reach.
How to check safely
- Sign in directly through the official X website or app.
- Open the account’s Premium settings and look for an entitlement or subscription status.
- Compare the displayed benefits with the tier shown; do not infer access from follower count alone.
- If X shows a paid checkout despite an apparent entitlement, avoid payment until X support or current official documentation clarifies the situation.
The Bottom Line
Musk announced free Premium for accounts with more than 2,500 verified subscriber followers and free Premium+ for accounts with more than 5,000 on March 28, 2024. The statement did not establish a permanent, fully documented policy, and ordinary followers—or even verified followers who are not subscribers—do not automatically satisfy it.
