In May 2025, reports identified Haemanthus as an early-stage blood-testing startup led by Billy Evans, Elizabeth Holmes’s partner. The company was described as developing light-based analysis of biological samples, with animal health as a possible first market. The reports did not establish a finished product, validated diagnostic, completed fundraising round, or Haemanthus-specific FDA authorization.
What is Haemanthus?
TechCrunch reported on May 10, 2025, citing The New York Times, that Evans was working on Haemanthus. NPR reported the same day, based on sources with direct knowledge, that the company was early-stage and had about a dozen people involved. NPR described a potential consumer product as still under development.
The reports described different fundraising figures, which refer to different things: TechCrunch said the company was seeking to raise more than $50 million, while NPR reported that Evans had already raised millions, mostly from friends, family, and other supporters. NPR did not specify the amount. Neither report establishes that the sought-after round was completed.
What does the startup plan to test?
The company’s reported concept uses light detection, including Raman spectroscopy, to analyze biological samples. TechCrunch said company materials described a laser-based machine intended to analyze blood, saliva, and urine for cancer and infections. The reported plan was to start with pet health and potentially consider human applications later.

Those descriptions concern a proposed technology and market plan, not demonstrated test performance. The cited reports do not establish that Haemanthus had a usable diagnostic service, or that its approach could reliably detect the conditions named in its reported pitch.
Is Elizabeth Holmes formally involved?
NPR reported that Holmes had advised Evans, while saying the precise nature of her support was unclear. One source told NPR that she was not planning to take a formal role. The reporting therefore supports describing her as a reported adviser, not as a company executive or employee.

NPR also reproduced statements from Haemanthus’s account on X. The company acknowledged the relationship and said, “Skepticism is rational. We must clear a higher bar.” It also said, “We prefer to build first, talk later. The science, when ready, will stand on its own merits,” and, “This is not Theranos 2.0.” These are company statements, not independent evidence that the technology works.
What evidence would establish whether the test works?
The FDA describes in vitro diagnostics as tests performed on samples taken from the human body, such as blood, that can detect diseases or other conditions. That general definition helps explain the questions a proposed blood-based diagnostic raises; it is not a finding about Haemanthus or its product.

To assess a diagnostic claim, readers would need evidence tied to the test’s intended use and sample types, including independent analytical and clinical validation, reproducibility, and comparisons with established methods. The May 2025 reporting cited here did not provide those results for Haemanthus.
Regulatory status also needs to be stated carefully. The FDA’s history page says a federal district court vacated the agency’s 2024 final rule on laboratory-developed tests on March 31, 2025, and that on September 19, 2025, the FDA issued a rule reverting to the prior regulatory text. That history concerns the LDT rule; it does not establish which regulatory pathway would apply to Haemanthus or whether the company has any FDA clearance, approval, or other authorization.

What remains unknown?
- Whether Haemanthus completed the fundraising it reportedly sought.
- Whether the company has since advanced its product or changed its plans.
- Whether the proposed technology has independent clinical validation or demonstrated performance.
- Whether Haemanthus has obtained any company-specific regulatory authorization.
- The precise nature and extent of Holmes’s reported advice.
TechCrunch reported in 2025 that Holmes was sentenced in 2022 to 11 years in prison for defrauding investors in connection with Theranos. That history helps explain scrutiny of a new blood-testing venture involving her partner, but it does not by itself establish anything about Haemanthus’s technology or Evans’s conduct.
