Electric cars are more energy-efficient and have no tailpipe emissions when running on electricity, but they are not automatically cheaper or more convenient for every driver. The best choice depends on the vehicles you are comparing, your local fuel and electricity prices, how you charge, and the trips you make.

1. Purchase price and ownership cost

Compare similar cars, not broad averages

Start with vehicles in the same class and compare similarly equipped trims. A U.S. Department of Energy analysis published in January 2025 estimated that a 2025 compact battery-electric vehicle (BEV) had a purchase-cost difference of $7,900 versus a comparable internal-combustion vehicle, in 2024 dollars. This is a modeled class estimate, not a current sticker price or a quote for a particular car. Incentives, trim, financing, and local taxes can change what you pay. DOE’s incremental purchase-cost report explains the estimate.

Calculate what ownership would cost you

A lower fuel or maintenance bill does not by itself make one vehicle cheaper to own. Compare purchase price and financing alongside annual mileage, gasoline and electricity rates, maintenance, tires, insurance, registration, and any incentives you qualify for. The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) Vehicle Cost Calculator lets you select vehicles and enter driving and cost assumptions; its results are a high-level estimate, not a guarantee.

AFDC’s consumer comparison reports average maintenance costs of 10.1 cents per mile for gasoline vehicles and 6.1 cents per mile for all-electric vehicles. It also gives historical annual fuel-cost examples for model-year 2023: $1,100 for a Kia Niro Hybrid, $850 for a Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid, and $650 for a Kia Niro Electric. These are published comparisons and dated examples, not current forecasts or assured savings for a buyer. AFDC’s electric-vehicle consumer information describes the comparisons.

  • Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.

An EV may cost more upfront, while extensive use of costly public fast charging, low annual mileage, insurance, or financing can affect whether operating savings offset that difference. Gasoline and electricity prices also vary by location. Use your own inputs rather than assuming either vehicle type always costs less over its lifetime.

2. Charging, range, and everyday use

Can you charge at home or work?

Gasoline cars refuel at fuel stations; a BEV needs access to charging. Home charging can fit easily into a routine if you have a suitable parking space and electrical setup. AFDC describes overnight charging at home with a vehicle cordset and a garage outlet, but that does not mean every outlet or installation is suitable, or that every vehicle uses the same connector. Check the vehicle’s requirements and the capacity of your electrical setup.

If you cannot charge where you park, consider where public or workplace charging is available and how often you would need it. Charging time depends on the vehicle, battery, charger power, temperature, and charging conditions, so there is no single time that applies to every EV.

Match range to your driving

Think about your normal daily distance as well as your longest and most frequent longer trips. Range and public-charger access matter particularly when you cannot charge at home or your route has limited charging options. AFDC identifies range concerns and access to public charging as considerations for consumers. A useful comparison is practical: where will you charge, how often, and does the car’s range suit the trips you actually make?

Where plug-in hybrids fit

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is not the same as a BEV or a conventional gasoline car. It can run on grid electricity for some driving and use gasoline when needed. Its costs and emissions depend partly on how often you charge it and how much you drive in electric mode. When comparing a PHEV, account for both its electric miles and gasoline use. AFDC’s Vehicle Cost Calculator includes vehicle comparisons and assumptions for estimating costs.

3. Efficiency and environmental impact

Energy efficiency is not the same as personal savings

The U.S. Department of Energy says a typical EV is 87%–91% efficient after regenerative braking, compared with about 30% for a conventional gasoline vehicle, depending on the drive cycle. This comparison, published September 16, 2024, concerns how much energy is converted into motion; it does not predict an individual driver’s bill or an exact emissions reduction. DOE’s efficiency comparison provides the figures.

Consider emissions over the vehicle’s life

A car’s tailpipe is only one part of its environmental impact. A BEV operating solely on electricity has no tailpipe emissions, but electricity generation can produce emissions. Lifecycle accounting also considers fuel production, vehicle and battery manufacturing, and end-of-life impacts. The electricity mix matters: in general, charging on a lower-polluting grid gives an EV a larger lifecycle advantage over a similar gasoline vehicle. AFDC explains these boundaries in its overview of emissions from electric vehicles.

In a U.S. Department of Energy R&D GREET model comparison for simulation year 2025, a representative EV had 46% fewer lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions than a comparable internal-combustion vehicle. The modeled vehicles were representative light-duty SUVs; the gasoline vehicle used E10 and the EV used the U.S. average electricity-generation mix. The assessment included vehicle and battery production and end-of-life, fuel production and use, and fuel-production facility construction. It is a modeled result for those assumptions and boundaries, not a fixed percentage for every vehicle or region. DOE’s R&D GREET model information describes the modeling resource.

How to make the comparison for your household

  1. Choose comparable vehicles. Match vehicle class, size, equipment, and trim as closely as possible before comparing prices.
  2. Enter your real cost assumptions. Use your expected annual mileage, local gasoline price and electricity rate, financing, insurance, registration, maintenance, and applicable incentives in the AFDC calculator.
  3. Map your charging routine. Check whether you can charge at home or work, and identify public charging options for the trips you make.
  4. Check trip fit. Compare the EV’s range with your ordinary driving and longer routes, including the availability of charging where you travel.
  5. Keep the emissions comparison in context. Distinguish tailpipe emissions from lifecycle emissions and note the electricity mix and vehicle assumptions behind any quoted estimate.
