Egress Bandwidth Costs: Why Self-Hosted Streaming Becomes Expensive

Egress Bandwidth: The Hidden Cost of Self-Hosted Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you decide to run your own streaming infrastructure instead of using a managed platform, the spreadsheet looks manageable at first. A small cloud server costs 5-15 dollars per month. Encoding software is free or cheap. YouTube’s ingest is free. But self-hosted streaming has a hidden cost that grows with every viewer, and most operators do not discover it until the bill arrives: egress bandwidth fees.

Egress is the data flowing out of your server to the internet. When you serve a video to a viewer, that bandwidth is egress. YouTube also pays for egress when it replicates your stream across their CDN, but YouTube absorbs that cost—it is part of their infrastructure. When you host the encoding yourself and stream directly to YouTube, you pay for the upload bandwidth from your encoder to YouTube. When you serve the video file itself to users for looping or download, you pay for the egress for every byte that leaves your server. The math scales quickly and is often the reason “cheap” self-hosted solutions become expensive within a few months.

Most cloud providers charge for egress. AWS charges between 0.02 and 0.12 USD per GB depending on region and volume. Google Cloud Storage charges 0.12 USD per GB for egress in most regions. Linode charges 0.01 USD per GB above the first 1 TB included in your plan. DigitalOcean charges 0.01 USD per GB. These seem small per-GB, but they compound. A single viewer watching a 10-minute video requires 100-300 MB of download depending on resolution. If 1,000 viewers watch that video, you have 100-300 GB of egress. At 0.1 USD per GB, that is 10-30 dollars for one video and one day of viewers. At 0.02 USD per GB on the low end, it is still 2-6 dollars. Multiply across a month of streams, and the egress bill becomes the largest line item in your budget.

This is why managed streaming platforms, including YouTube for uploads and StreamNeo for loops, charge by traffic instead of by virtual machine size. The bandwidth cost is the constraint, not the processor. Self-hosted streaming transfers this constraint from the platform to you, and you bear the full cost unless you understand the numbers in advance.

Keep a Prerecorded YouTube Channel Live Without Self-Hosting

StreamNeo turns an uploaded prerecorded video into an always-on YouTube Live stream. Upload your video and paste your YouTube stream key to start the broadcast workflow.

The stream runs in the cloud while your PC stays off, so you do not need to leave a local encoder or computer running around the clock. This directly fits channels that want reliable 24/7 YouTube broadcasting without managing their own streaming server.

StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and automatically restarts dropped streams, providing built-in monitoring for unattended broadcasts.

You can test the workflow with a free 24-hour 720p/30fps trial with no card required at signup, then compare the experience with your current self-hosted setup.

Why Egress Is Invisible Until It Is Too Late

The egress problem creeps up because cloud providers bury bandwidth costs in separate line items. Your cloud invoice shows your server at 10 dollars, your storage at 2 dollars, and then, often in a footnote or separate charge, egress at 50-200 dollars. New operators compare the 10-dollar server cost to a SaaS monthly subscription and assume self-hosting is cheaper. They do not calculate bandwidth until the first bill shock arrives.

Compounding happens fast. A financial education channel running a market commentary loop during market hours (7 hours per weekday, roughly 35 hours per month) with 50 concurrent viewers does not sound like much. 50 viewers watching 1 Mbps video for 35 hours is 35 terabits, or 4.375 terabytes per month. At 0.1 USD per GB, that is 438 dollars in egress alone. Add a second stream, double it. Go to 100 concurrent viewers, and you are over 1,000 dollars monthly in bandwidth, before paying for the server itself, storage, or anything else.

The bandwidth math is unforgiving because video is large. One gigabyte of data is one second of 8 Mbps video. If you serve video at 5 Mbps (which is not unreasonable for 1080p), one day of 24 hours of streaming is 432 gigabytes. One month is 12 terabytes. At 0.05 USD per GB (a mid-range rate), that is 600 dollars per month just for bandwidth, before any viewer actually watches it. If viewers are actually watching, the egress scales further because you now have viewer downloads on top of the upstream push to YouTube.

This is why self-hosted solutions work only for extremely low-bandwidth niches. A channel with 1-2 concurrent viewers, streaming for 8 hours per day, at low bitrate, might keep egress under 100 dollars per month. A channel with 20+ concurrent viewers, or streaming 24/7, or streaming at HD quality, will quickly exceed 500-1,000 dollars per month in bandwidth alone, at which point a managed platform becomes obviously cheaper.

The False Economy of Bulk Data Centers and Colocation

Some operators attempt to escape egress costs by colocating their own hardware in a data center, thinking that direct peering or cheaper bulk bandwidth rates will solve the problem. Bulk bandwidth is cheaper, sometimes 0.01 USD per GB or less. But colocation itself costs 50-200 dollars per month per U-space, and hardware costs 500-2,000 dollars upfront. Even with cheap bulk bandwidth, you have not actually saved money unless you are sustaining very high volumes, and the operational burden of managing physical hardware in a data center is substantial.

Another attempted escape is renting bulk bandwidth from a CDN and streaming from there. This pushes the problem around but does not eliminate it. CDNs charge for bandwidth, though sometimes less than cloud providers. But you now have to manage the CDN integration, handle failover if your primary bandwidth provider fails, and operate two separate systems instead of one. The operational complexity often exceeds the savings, and the bandwidth cost is still there; you have just moved it to a different vendor.

The core truth is that video bandwidth is expensive, full stop. The only way to avoid egress costs is to avoid egress. You do this by:

  1. Using a managed streaming platform that absorbs bandwidth into their pricing model.
  2. Streaming to a platform like YouTube that handles CDN distribution transparently.
  3. Reducing quality or bitrate until bandwidth is negligible.
  4. Limiting your audience to very small numbers.

All other approaches shuffle the cost around but do not eliminate it.

Bandwidth Costs vs Platform Fees: The Math

A managed streaming platform charges a percentage of revenue, a fixed fee per stream, or a fee per viewer-hour. These seem high until compared to egress. StreamNeo, for example, costs nothing per month for 24/7 streaming; you pay only for uptime and the service. This is cheaper than the egress alone for any channel with more than a handful of concurrent viewers.

Compare two scenarios, both with 100 concurrent viewers watching at 4 Mbps (a reasonable 720p bitrate):

Scenario A: Self-hosted on AWS
– Server: 50 dollars per month (for adequate compute)
– Egress: 100 concurrent viewers × 4 Mbps × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days / 8 bits per byte / 1,000,000,000 = 129.6 TB per month × 0.1 USD per GB = 1,296 dollars
– Total: 1,346 dollars per month
– Uptime: you are responsible; drops cost you

When Egress Becomes the Actual Problem

Financial education channels sometimes operate 24/7 loops that are watched by students, traders, or market enthusiasts across different time zones. A global loop channel with viewers constantly watching will accumulate enormous egress costs. A single viewer watching 8 hours per day, every day, on a 5 Mbps stream is 43.2 GB per month. 50 such viewers is 2.16 TB per month. At 0.1 USD per GB, that is 216 dollars per month for those 50 viewers alone. At 0.02 USD per GB, it is still 43 dollars.

The reason YouTube does not charge per viewer is that viewer-facing bandwidth is not the constraint anymore; distribution is. YouTube’s infrastructure handles millions of concurrent viewers with a scaling model that works because they do not charge per megabyte downloaded. They charge per upload (premium channels with ads, YouTube TV subscriptions), and they offset that by selling advertising. Self-hosted streaming cannot compete with this model without massive traffic, because you will be charged egress for every single viewer, and YouTube will not.

Egress and Regulatory Compliance

Some financial streaming operations are subject to data residency or compliance requirements. If your stream must be served from a specific geographic region, you cannot simply use a global CDN or YouTube’s native distribution. You have to host the bandwidth yourself in that region. Regional cloud providers often charge more for egress (sometimes 0.15-0.25 USD per GB), making the problem worse.

If you hit this constraint, the only solutions are:

  1. Accept the higher egress costs and budget accordingly.
  2. Reduce bandwidth (lower quality, lower bitrate, lower frame rate).
  3. Limit the audience to reduce concurrent viewers.
  4. Use a managed platform that has infrastructure in your required region and handles compliance for you.

StreamNeo handles the cloud distribution piece, so you do not have to choose between compliance and cost; the platform absorbs both.

The Path Forward: From Self-Hosted to Sustainable

If you are currently self-hosting a stream and your egress bill is surprising, the fix is not to optimize regional selection or tweak encoder settings. Those help marginally. The fix is to move to a managed platform or fundamentally reduce your traffic model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A financial channel that updates a market loop every hour during market hours will incur far less egress than one streaming 24/7. A channel that streams at 720p30 instead of 1080p60 will use half the bandwidth. A channel that targets a specific region instead of global distribution will reduce concurrent viewers. These architectural decisions reduce egress, but they also reduce the value and reach of your channel.

The better option is to switch platforms. StreamNeo runs your 24/7 stream from the cloud for a fraction of what egress alone costs on self-hosted infrastructure. You upload your video once, paste your YouTube stream key, and the stream runs unattended with automatic monitoring and recovery. No egress bills, no regional bandwidth choices, no encoder to manage. There is a free 24-hour trial and no card required, which is long enough to see the cost difference between self-hosted bandwidth and a managed service.

The spreadsheet of “buy cheap server, host it yourself” breaks the moment you multiply concurrent viewers by bitrate by seconds-per-month. The egress column is where self-hosted dreams go to die.
