The right approach depends on what customers need to do, which wallet platforms they use, and what outcome you want to measure; the available evidence does not show that wallets universally outperform email, apps, or other channels.
What mobile-wallet marketing means
The phrase covers two related but distinct activities:
- Payment-acceptance messaging: Tell customers that a supported wallet payment method is available at checkout, and show them where and how to use it.
- Wallet-pass marketing: Offer a non-payment item—such as a loyalty reward card, coupon, event ticket, boarding pass, or membership credential—that customers can save and use later.
Apple describes passes as including event tickets, boarding passes, membership reward cards, and coupons. A pass can be offered after a relevant action, such as buying a ticket or registering for rewards. See Apple’s Wallet documentation.
Why hasn’t mobile wallet marketing taken off yet?
PassKit poses that question in a vendor article, but it is a prompt for discussion—not evidence that wallet use has failed to grow or is now accelerating. “Wallet use” also describes different behaviors, so figures about paying with a phone should not be treated as figures about saving tickets or loyalty cards.

For example, the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported that in early 2023, 60% of consumers under 40 had used a mobile wallet, compared with 38% of consumers aged 40 or older. That is dated U.S. evidence about payment use, not pass adoption or a current global estimate. The CFPB also describes Apple and Google as dominant in the U.S. mobile tap-to-pay landscape. CFPB, Consumer Use of Mobile Financial Services (2023).
A different measure comes from ACI Speedpay’s 2025 Mobile Wallet Trend Report: 39% of respondents said they used a smartphone-native wallet to store non-payment items such as tickets, boarding passes, or loyalty cards in 2023, compared with 21% in 2019. The report’s generational figures for that item-storage measure were 63% for Gen Z, 54% for Millennials, 38% for Gen X, and 20% for Boomers+. These figures concern storing non-payment items, not contactless payment. ACI Speedpay, 2025 Mobile Wallet Trend Report.
Geography and measurement matter, too. The Reserve Bank of Australia reported that 43% of consumers in its 2025 Consumer Payments Survey used a mobile device for a contactless payment during the diary week, compared with 35% in 2022. That is Australian payment behavior, not a measure of wallet-pass storage. Reserve Bank of Australia, May 2026 bulletin.

How to build a wallet campaign around a customer task
1. Start with the moment a wallet feature helps
Choose a real customer action, not a channel in search of a purpose. Payment-acceptance messaging belongs where a customer is deciding how to pay. A loyalty pass fits naturally when someone joins a rewards program. A ticket pass belongs after a ticket purchase or registration. A repeat-use pass may be useful when it makes an authorized, predictable activity easier.
Apple says a pass can be presented through system UI after actions such as buying a ticket or registering for rewards. Put the add-to-wallet option where the customer receives the pass, and explain its benefit at sign-up. Apple also says users are notified when a pass is added. Apple’s Wallet documentation.

2. Explain the utility plainly
Tell customers what the wallet option does, where it works, and what to do next. For payment acceptance, Apple’s guidance includes examples such as “Now Accepting Apple Pay” and “Apple Pay is an easy and secure way to pay in [app name].” The latter is Apple-provided example copy, not an independent performance finding. Adapt any wording to the merchant’s actual checkout flow, supported payment method, and app or website. Apple Pay marketing guidance.
For a pass, state what the customer is saving and when it will be useful: for example, a reward card to present when eligible, or a ticket to access an event. Avoid promoting a pass without a clear use after it is saved.

3. Match distribution to context
Apple recommends using relevant app and website experiences, sending an email within the first week after enabling Apple Pay, announcing availability on social media, and using a concise web banner. It also recommends updating an App Store product page where relevant and showing screenshots that reflect the authentic checkout flow. These are Apple’s platform recommendations, not proof that each channel will produce the same result for every audience. Apple Pay marketing guidance.
For a pass, make the add-to-wallet action visible at the point the pass is issued—such as sign-up, purchase confirmation, or registration. Choose other channels based on whether they help a customer complete that task, rather than assuming every pass warrants a broad campaign.

4. Respect platform message boundaries
Wallet notifications are not an unrestricted promotional channel. Apple’s Wallet Human Interface Guidelines state: “Never use a change message for marketing or other noncritical communication.” Keep pass-update messages tied to relevant pass changes, and consult current platform documentation before promising a particular notification behavior. Separate campaign exposure and pass adoption from downstream customer behavior. Pick a metric that matches the job, define its time window, and avoid treating a correlation or vendor case study as a general causal estimate.
- For a pass offer: Measure add-to-wallet completion, then active or presented passes if that is relevant to the program.
- For a coupon: Track redemption and the period in which the offer can be used.
- For loyalty: Track participation or repeat use, not only the number of passes saved.
- For payment messaging: Consider checkout completion or another defined checkout outcome, with a comparison that can separate the message’s effect from other changes.
- For store campaigns: Define what counts as a visit and the period after notification before interpreting the result.
Google’s Wallet partner case study for Pets Place reports 60% digital-pass adoption and says nearly one-third of members visited a store within three weeks of a targeted push notification. Those are figures published in a Google case study; the reported summary does not establish a universal benchmark or independent causal attribution. Google Wallet: Pets Place case study.

Choose an approach by fit, not by a “best” label
Before selecting a pass platform or campaign, compare the factors that determine whether it will work for your customers:
- Audience and geography: Identify the customer segment and market, then confirm which wallet platforms are available to them.
- Purpose: Decide whether you are communicating payment acceptance or issuing a non-payment pass.
- Utility: Specify why a customer would save or use the pass.
- Distribution moment: Place the offer at checkout, sign-up, purchase confirmation, or another action that creates a reason to use it.
- Platform support and constraints: Check compatibility, pass design and update behavior, and rules governing messages.
- Measurement: Choose an outcome—such as addition, redemption, repeat use, conversion, or visits—and define a time window.
- Evidence quality: Distinguish platform guidance from regulator or central-bank data, survey results, vendor case studies, and vendor opinion.
