Recommended Free Tools
A telescope, a planetarium projector and a moving solar-system model do different jobs: one is for outdoor observing, one projects sky imagery indoors, and one demonstrates how planets orbit. The available manufacturer and NASA sources support a few named products and several free activities—not 18 verified retail toys—so this guide avoids inventing products and labels DIY resources clearly.
Choose by the kind of astronomy play your child wants
| Format | What children do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner telescope | Point an optical instrument at the sky or distant terrestrial objects and observe through its eyepiece. | A child curious about looking at the Moon and learning to use observing equipment. |
| Planetarium projector | Project star maps or space images onto a surface indoors. | Indoor exploration of star patterns and space imagery; it is not a telescope. |
| Moving solar-system model | Build and wind a mechanical model to see planets move around the Sun. | Learning planet order, orbital motion and gears through a hands-on model. |
| DIY or NASA activity | Draw a solar-system scale model or make a simple projector from household materials. | Low-cost, guided activities to extend interest without buying a boxed toy. |
Age guidance below is what the cited manufacturer pages or NASA resource state for their listed versions. Check the current package or listing for age details, contents and supervision warnings, which can vary by market.

1. Thames & Kosmos Orbiting Solar System STEM Kit
This wind-up building set makes a model of the Sun and eight planets. Thames & Kosmos says it teaches planet order, relative sizes, orbital motion and how gears work; its US page lists age 6+ and 59 pieces. Treat it as a teaching model, not a scale-accurate map of the solar system. See the manufacturer’s kit details.
2. Thames & Kosmos My Discovery Telescope
Listed for ages 6+, this entry-level telescope offers 12× magnification. The manufacturer suggests it for observing the Moon, constellations, planets and terrestrial subjects. It is an introductory observing instrument; the page does not establish independent optical test results. See the manufacturer’s product page.

- Immersive Solar System Projector: Our solar system for kids is nice STEM toys for 5+ year old who love to explore the universe. With our solar system model, they can project the 8 planets orbiting the sun onto any surface through the lights, turning their ceiling into a planetarium that they desire. It’s like being on the scene and allows children to explore the mysteries of the fantasy universe in their rooms.
- Talking Planets Toys in EN & ES: Our educational toys includes both English and Spanish options, easy to switch. Children can press the planet pattern on the base to get interesting educational facts about astronomy and help them expand their knowledge of the solar system. It’s easy to use and fun to learn, making it a real learning toys for 5+ year old.
- 24 HD Space Exploration Slides: The planets for kids come with 3 disks for a total of 24 full-color images! Show kids the solar system, spaceships, astronauts, and planets. Insert the disks into the projector, the image can be projected on the wall, adjust the top knob to the clearest effect, and start our journey in space.
- 2-in-1 Bedtime Companion & Night Light: No more bedtime fears! Our solar system stem toys for 3 4 5+ year old girls and boys comes with a bright LED solar dome that kids can use as a night light or flashlight at night and no longer afraid to fall asleep alone. When children go to the bathroom at night, turning on the solar system projector can also provide light in the dark to prevent falling. Powered by 3 AA batteries (not included).
- Easy Assembly & Worry-free Gift: Designed for little hands and stress-free parents! The snap-and-lock pole ensures a sturdy, wobble-free setup in seconds (simply press the solar sphere down until you hear a slight "click"). Made of durable, kid-safe materials, it makes premium educational gifts for 3 4 5 6 7 8 year old boys girls, for birthdays, Christmas, or holidays.
3. The Thames & Kosmos Telescope
This refractor is listed for ages 8+ and comes with glass optics, a finderscope, a tabletop tripod and an instruction manual. The manufacturer lists 20× and 100× magnifications and says it can be used to see the Moon and planets. What a child can see depends on setup and observing conditions; magnification alone is not a measure of image quality. Check the manufacturer’s telescope details.
4. Thames & Kosmos Planetarium Projector
The cited UK product page describes a rotating star map for the northern and southern hemispheres, four image disks containing 32 space-related images in total, an educational poster and a USB power cable. It lists age 8+ and says children under 8 need adult supervision. This projects imagery indoors; it does not gather light from the real sky like a telescope. See the UK manufacturer’s page.

These are useful educational choices, but they are activities or learning resources—not packaged toys. They bring the total number of verified entries here to seven, rather than suggesting that 18 distinct retail products have been checked.
5. Draw a sidewalk-chalk solar system
NASA Space Place’s activity-book resource suggests drawing the solar system with sidewalk chalk, among other activities, to explore scale and NASA missions. It is a practical way to turn a large concept into a physical activity; adapt the layout to the space available rather than treating a drawing as a precise scale model. NASA lists the page as last updated January 20, 2026. Open NASA’s activity books.

6. Make a starry-sky projector
NASA Science describes a K–5 activity in which learners make a starry-sky projector from a cardboard box. The activity introduces light, the solar system and the Sun, and lists the materials cost per learner as free. This is a hands-on DIY project, not a store-bought planetarium device; an adult can help with preparation and age-appropriate handling of materials. See NASA’s projector activity.
7. Explore NASA StarChild together
StarChild is an online learning center for ages 5–13, with material about the solar system, the Milky Way and the universe. Use it to extend a toy or activity into reading and conversation; it is not a physical toy. Visit NASA StarChild.

How to choose—and what to check before buying
- Start with the activity. Choose a telescope for observing, a projector for indoor sky imagery, or the wind-up model for mechanical movement and planet order. One format does not replace the others.
- Match the age guidance. Use the age recommendation for the exact product and market, and follow any package warnings. The cited projector page specifically calls for adult supervision under age 8.
- Set expectations for telescopes. A telescope is observing equipment, not a device that guarantees a particular view. Setup and conditions matter, and a higher magnification figure by itself does not guarantee a better experience.
- Verify the current listing. Product contents, age details, availability and regional versions can change. Confirm them on the current manufacturer or retailer page before purchasing.
- Consider a free activity first. NASA’s chalk-scale activity or DIY projector can reveal whether a child enjoys building, drawing or guided exploration before you choose a physical product.
