Earning $5,000 more than you estimated does not mean you will owe $5,000. Your final Premium Tax Credit (PTC) is calculated from your tax-year circumstances and compared with the advance credit payments (APTC) sent to your insurer. But for tax year 2026, there is no repayment cap: if your advance payments exceed the credit you are allowed, you generally must repay the full excess. If your household income ends above 400% of the federal poverty line (FPL), the general rule is that you are not eligible for the PTC and must repay all APTC received.
What happens if your 2026 income is $5,000 higher than estimated?
The $5,000 difference is an income change, not a repayment calculation. Your tax result depends on your final household income, family size, Marketplace coverage, benchmark premiums, other eligibility requirements, and the amount of APTC paid during the year. The IRS determines the final credit through Form 8962, which reconciles the credit you are allowed with the advances paid on your behalf.

If your allowed PTC is less than your APTC, the excess is added to your tax liability. That can reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file. The IRS does not say that repayment is necessarily due in April; the effect appears through your federal return, and payment timing depends on your filing and tax circumstances.

Why 2026 has no repayment cap
For tax years beginning after December 31, 2025, the Working Families Tax Cuts Act removed the limits that previously capped repayment of excess APTC. The IRS states: “For tax years after 2025, you must repay the full amount by which your advance credit payments exceed your Premium Tax Credit.” The IRS FAQ identifies that answer as Q31, updated December 23, 2025.

This means old repayment-cap tables do not protect taxpayers reconciling 2026 coverage. For historical context only, IRS Publication 4491 (Rev. 10-2025) lists 2025 caps of $375 for single filers and $750 for other filing statuses below 200% FPL; $975 and $1,950 from 200% to under 300%; and $1,625 and $3,250 from 300% to under 400%. At 400% FPL and above, 2025 already had no cap. Those are 2025 figures, not 2026 limits.
How the ACA premium tax credit reconciliation works
Advance payments lower premiums during the year
The Marketplace estimates your PTC using information such as projected household income and family composition. You can choose to have all, some, or none of the estimated credit paid directly to your insurer to reduce monthly premiums.

Form 8962 compares the estimate with the allowed credit
Your final credit is determined using the facts for the tax year. On Form 8962, you compare the amount of APTC paid for you with the PTC you are actually allowed. If APTC was lower, you may claim the difference as a credit. If it was higher, the excess is repaid through your tax liability. Form 1095-A from the Marketplace provides key information needed to complete Form 8962.

For 2026, the general eligibility rule again limits the PTC to households with income at or below 400% FPL. If your final household income is above that threshold, you are generally ineligible for the PTC and must repay all APTC paid for the year. This is a substantial change for people who heard that income above 400% FPL could still qualify in recent years: temporary expanded eligibility applied to tax years 2021 through 2025.

The 400% threshold is a percentage, not one nationwide dollar amount. Applicable FPL guidelines vary by family size and geography, so do not rely on a remembered income figure; use the applicable IRS Form 8962 instructions. Income alone also does not determine eligibility. Other requirements apply, including Marketplace enrollment and whether you had access to disqualifying qualifying employer or government coverage; there are also specific exceptions to the general income rules.

Check Form 1095-A and file Form 8962
Review your Form 1095-A for accuracy. If information is wrong, contact your Marketplace. Use the form to complete Form 8962 with your federal return. The IRS says taxpayers claiming the PTC must attach Form 8962 even if they otherwise would not usually be required to file a return. Follow the current IRS forms and instructions for your circumstances.

Should you take all, some, or none of the advance credit?
The choice is a cash-flow trade-off. Taking more APTC lowers premiums now, but if your final allowed credit is lower than estimated, you may need to repay the excess at filing. Taking less means paying more of the premium during coverage and can reduce the chance of excess advances. Taking none means paying the full premium monthly and claiming any PTC you qualify for when you file. The best fit depends on your household’s budget and how uncertain your annual income and eligibility are, especially if you are near the 400% FPL threshold.
