Historical deal notice: Amazon listings reported by HotHardware on March 30, 2026 cut $150 to $200 from selected 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models using Apple’s new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The machines had become available on March 11, so these were unusually early retailer reductions. The prices below are not confirmed current prices; check the live listing, seller and configuration before ordering.
Which M5 Pro and M5 Max models were discounted?
The promotion covered selected configurations rather than the entire lineup. HotHardware said the offers appeared during Amazon’s Big Spring Sale period, although the MacBook discounts were technically separate from the event. A $200 reduction was the maximum; several 14-inch M5 Pro models received $150 off.

Reported 14-inch deals
| Configuration | Reported price | Reported saving |
|---|---|---|
| M5 Max, 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB memory, 2TB SSD | $3,449.99 | $200 |
| M5 Pro, 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 24GB memory, 2TB SSD | $2,649.99 | $150 |
| M5 Pro, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, 2TB SSD | $2,449.99 | $150 |
| M5 Pro, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, 1TB SSD | $2,049.99 | $150 |
Apple’s U.S. launch prices started at $2,199 for the 14-inch M5 Pro, $2,699 for the 16-inch M5 Pro, $3,599 for the 14-inch M5 Max and $3,899 for the 16-inch M5 Max. Those are starting prices, not necessarily the original prices of every configuration in the table. See the Apple announcement and HotHardware’s March 30 report for the source figures.
How good was a $150 or $200 reduction?
In dollars, saving $150 to $200 on a $2,000-to-$4,000 laptop is substantial. As a percentage of Apple’s starting prices, however, it is modest: $150 off $2,199 is about 6.8%, $200 off $2,699 is about 7.4%, and $200 off $3,899 is about 5.1%. The exact percentage for a configured machine depends on its original price.

That makes the deal attractive when you need a workstation immediately, but less compelling if you can wait for a major shopping event or a later clearance cycle. June 2026 Prime Day coverage from 9to5Mac later showed discounts of up to $215 on an M5 Pro configuration, illustrating the trade-off between buying early and waiting.
Best value by type of buyer
Lowest-cost M5 Pro
The 14-inch M5 Pro with 24GB memory and a 1TB SSD at $2,049.99 was the least expensive M5 Pro deal listed. It is the sensible target for development, photography, audio, office work and moderate-to-heavy video editing when maximum GPU capacity is unnecessary.

Best larger-screen M5 Pro
The 16-inch M5 Pro with 24GB memory and a 1TB SSD was listed at $2,549.99. The extra $500 buys the larger chassis and display, not a fundamentally different M5 Pro platform, so it makes sense mainly for timeline-heavy creative work, large code layouts or desk-based use.
Least expensive M5 Max
The 14-inch M5 Max with 36GB memory and a 2TB SSD at $3,449.99 was the entry point to the Max deals. Pay this premium when your work is genuinely GPU-, memory- or media-engine-heavy—such as 3D rendering, visual effects, simulation or large local AI models—not merely because “Max” sounds faster.

Maximum graphics and memory
The 16-inch M5 Max configurations listed included up to a 40-core GPU and 48GB in the reported deals; Apple says the platform can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory. That headroom is relevant to unusually demanding production and research workloads, but it is poor value for lightly threaded or ordinary productivity tasks.
M5 Pro versus M5 Max
| Specification | M5 Pro | M5 Max |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Up to 18 cores | 18 cores |
| GPU | Up to 20 cores | 32 or 40 cores |
| Memory bandwidth | 307GB/s | 460GB/s or 614GB/s |
| Unified memory | Up to 64GB | Up to 128GB |
| Media engines | Pro configuration | Two video-encode and two ProRes encode/decode engines |
These specifications are from Apple’s 16-inch technical specifications. M5 Max’s advantage is concentrated in GPU throughput, memory bandwidth, memory capacity and media processing. If your applications are CPU-limited, the extra cost may produce little practical benefit.

14-inch or 16-inch?
- Choose 14-inch for lower cost, easier travel and the ability to use the same M5 Pro or M5 Max families in a smaller chassis.
- Choose 16-inch for a 16.2-inch display, more workspace for timelines and code, a larger battery and a more desktop-like setup. Apple lists the display at 3456×2234 and 254 pixels per inch.
The 16-inch model is not automatically faster simply because it is larger. The relevant premium is its screen, battery and physical working space.

Apple claims up to 30% faster CPU performance, up to 50% higher graphics performance, up to four-times faster large-language-model prompt processing, and up to twice the SSD performance (up to 14.5GB/s) versus corresponding M4 Pro and M4 Max systems. Apple also claims up to 24 hours of battery life, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thunderbolt 5, a 12MP Center Stage camera and 1TB starting storage for M5 Pro or 2TB for M5 Max.

Those are Apple’s results under specified hardware, software and workloads—not independent benchmarks or a guarantee for every application. Owners of Intel Macs may notice a much larger practical jump than owners of recent M4 Pro or M4 Max machines.
Should you buy now or wait?
- Buy the historical-price equivalent only after verification if you need the machine now and the live price is still meaningfully below Apple’s price for the identical configuration.
- Wait if your current Mac meets your needs and you can tolerate the risk that a later Prime Day, back-to-school, holiday or clearance sale may be deeper.
- Consider regular M5 if you do not need Pro-level sustained performance. HotHardware’s separate March listings included a 14-inch M5 with 16GB/1TB at $1,549.99, 16GB/512GB at $1,499, 24GB/1TB at $1,799 and 32GB/1TB at $1,999. These were also historical prices.
- Consider M4 when a previous-generation model is substantially cheaper and your software does not benefit from the newer chip features.
The regular M5 16GB/1TB listing was only about $50.49 more than the reported 16GB/512GB offer, making the larger SSD the more practical choice if those prices reappear.
Check these details before paying
- Match the complete chip, CPU/GPU core count, memory and SSD capacity—not just “M5 Pro” or “M5 Max.”
- Confirm whether the unit is new, refurbished or open-box, and identify the actual seller and fulfillment party.
- Compare with Apple’s price for the same configuration, not an outdated or inflated retailer reference price.
- Check the return window, warranty and AppleCare eligibility.
- Verify Apple-silicon support for Windows-only applications, plug-ins, drivers and enterprise tools.
- Record the price-check date; retailer prices and availability can change without notice.
Apple’s official buying page is Apple’s MacBook Pro store; Amazon’s search page is Amazon’s MacBook Pro listings. Use Apple’s direct price as the baseline, and treat any March figure as historical unless the live product page confirms it.
