Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the E-Way Bill System gives you a Part-A Slip, the e-way bill is not complete: enter the required transport details in Part B. If generation stops with an error, use its exact wording to check the named invoice, GSTIN, item, tax or transport field against the underlying records. Account status and return-filing blocks can also prevent generation. The official E-Way Bill System FAQ and portal describe the relevant checks and escalation routes.
Start by identifying what the system actually returned. A slip, a field validation error, a login failure and a filing-status block are different problems, and each needs a different check. Avoid guessing replacement values or repeatedly submitting altered data: compare the portal entry with the source record, make the supported correction, and confirm that the system created a completed e-way bill.

First, identify what the portal returned
“Not generating” can mean different things: an incomplete Part-A Slip, a field validation error, a login or account problem, or a restriction tied to return filing. The correct fix depends on which result you see. Note the exact message and whether the portal created a document number or only a slip before changing any data.
This distinction matters before goods move. A Part-A Slip does not mean the same thing as a completed e-way bill; a rejection naming an invoice field is not necessarily an account problem; and an account block will not be resolved by changing an item’s HSN or a vehicle number. Use the result on screen to choose the next check. If you need support, keep the message and relevant document details so you can describe the issue precisely.

Part-A Slip: finish the transport details
A Part-A Slip is not a completed e-way bill. The E-Way Bill System FAQ explains that transport information still needs to be supplied in Part B. For road transport, enter the vehicle number; in other cases, provide the applicable transport document number. Once the required details are submitted, check that the portal has generated the completed e-way bill rather than assuming the slip is sufficient for dispatch. Read the official FAQ.
Treat the slip as an incomplete step in the workflow, not necessarily as a technical error. First establish which transport details apply to the movement. If the movement is by road, check the vehicle information; for another applicable case, use the transport document number. Then make the Part B entry and confirm the result in the portal. If you do not yet have the required transport information, do not mistake the saved slip for the completed document.
An error message: troubleshoot the named field
Do not change several fields at once. The official API error-code list includes validations for GSTIN, invoice number and date, supplier or consignee address and PIN, HSN, tax rates, transport mode, transporter ID, transport document number and vehicle format. Compare the specific field named in your message with the invoice, GSTIN/taxpayer record, item data or transport paperwork. The API list says it is incomplete and directs implementers to GetErrorList for full descriptions, so it should not be treated as a catalogue of every message shown in the portal. See the error-code list.
Use the field name as a clue to where to look, not as permission to substitute a value that merely passes validation. For an invoice number or date, consult the source invoice. For an address, PIN or state message, compare the supplier or consignee details with the relevant records and document. For HSN, UQC or tax-rate messages, return to the item and tax information rather than guessing. For transport details, compare the mode, transporter ID, transport document number or vehicle entry with the transport paperwork.
Some errors identify a specific value; others may describe a mismatch among related fields. In either case, correct only what the underlying record supports. The API error list is useful for recognizing categories, but it is not exhaustive and is aimed at API implementers. If your portal message does not appear there, rely on the exact portal wording and official support route rather than assuming the list proves the cause.
Fix common validation and account errors
| What you see | What to check or do |
|---|---|
| Invalid GSTIN or taxpayer details missing | Recheck the GSTIN and taxpayer record on the GST Common Portal. If contact or address details were recently amended, use the FAQ’s refresh-from-Common-Portal guidance and complete any required amendment there. |
| Invalid invoice or document information | Compare the invoice number and date entered with the source invoice. Check the exact field identified by the portal. |
| Address, PIN or state validation error | Compare supplier and consignee address, PIN and state details with the relevant records and source document. |
| HSN, unit or tax validation error | Recheck item details, HSN/UQC and tax rate against the invoice and applicable records; avoid guessing a replacement value. |
| Transporter or transport-document error | Verify the transporter ID and transport document number against the transport paperwork, and confirm the selected transport mode. |
| Vehicle number format rejected | Follow the format guidance displayed beside the vehicle field and compare the entry with the vehicle’s registration certificate. |
The official FAQ covers GSTIN and taxpayer details, account access and vehicle-format issues. If a field still fails after matching the source record, retain the exact error text and document details for support rather than repeatedly trying altered values.
Invalid GSTIN or missing taxpayer details
Begin by checking that the GSTIN entered is the GSTIN intended for the transaction and that it matches the taxpayer record on the GST Common Portal. A copied digit, wrong account or stale taxpayer data can make the portal details appear inconsistent, so compare the entry with the official record rather than relying only on a saved local contact or an older invoice template.
If a business contact or address was recently amended, the FAQ describes refreshing taxpayer details from the Common Portal and completing any amendment that is still needed there. A refresh is intended to bring the portal record in line with the common-portal data; it is not a substitute for correcting a wrong GST record at its source. After refreshing, check the record again before retrying generation. The FAQ does not make every missing-detail message a GSTIN error, so use the actual field named on screen to decide whether the problem is the identification number or another taxpayer detail.

Invoice, address, item and tax checks
When the message names invoice or document information, use the issued source invoice to confirm the number and date. Keep the distinction between a mistyped field and a source document that itself needs attention: changing the portal entry to a different number does not correct the underlying invoice. For supplier and consignee validations, review the relevant address, PIN and state fields together. The official error categories include these location details, so a mismatch in one should prompt a source-record check rather than a guess at a nearby PIN or state.
For an HSN, UQC or tax-rate validation, check the item-level information and applicable records. The API error list names these categories, but it does not provide a reason to use an approximate code or rate. The portal has also displayed a notice dated 27 January 2026 concerning validation relaxation for certain HSNs; because the scope and details of portal notices can change, check the current official notice rather than assuming a relaxation applies to a particular item. Do not treat that notice as a general waiver of item-data checks.
Transport and vehicle errors
Transport-related validations can involve mode, transporter ID, transport document number or vehicle format. Check the field named in the error against the transport paperwork and confirm that the selected mode corresponds to the information being supplied. If the portal rejects a transporter or document number, do not replace it with a number from another movement. Confirm the details with the transport record first.

For a rejected vehicle number, follow any format guidance displayed beside the vehicle field and compare the entry with the vehicle registration certificate. No universal formatting example is specified in the official guidance cited here, so use the field’s live guidance rather than adding spaces, punctuation or a different sequence on guesswork. A correct vehicle registration can still be entered in a format the field does not accept; check both the registration record and the portal’s stated format.
OTP not arriving
The FAQ advises checking whether DND settings or network conditions are preventing delivery. It also describes using the registered email OTP option. Use the option associated with the account and verify that the registered email address is accessible.
If the OTP does not arrive, first distinguish a delivery problem from a login credential problem. Check the network and DND settings identified in the FAQ, then use the registered-email option if it is available for the account. Do not assume that repeated requests will resolve an unreachable registered contact method. If the available official options do not work, retain the account and error details and use the portal’s support or grievance route.
Login fails, or the account appears frozen
Check that you are using the correct credentials and use the portal’s official username or password recovery options if needed. For a frozen account, check the GSTIN/registration status and taxpayer details. If access works on the GST portal but not on the E-Way Bill System, the FAQ directs users to lodge a grievance. Use the official support page for current contact routes rather than relying on phone numbers copied elsewhere: E-Way Bill System contact information.

Check whether return filing is blocking generation
The official portal currently describes an e-way bill generation block for taxpayers who have not filed GSTR-3B for two consecutive months. Portal notices and compliance conditions can change, so read the message shown in your own account and confirm the applicable requirement there before acting. Check the official portal and notices.
If the relevant returns have been filed but the portal still treats them as unfiled, the portal points to Search and then Update Block Status. Recheck the account after using the option. If the filing record and portal status still disagree, preserve the error and use the grievance/support route.
This is an account-status check, not an invitation to infer that every generation failure is caused by a return. Read the portal’s own block message and check the taxpayer’s filing position. The currently displayed portal information refers to non-filing of GSTR-3B for two consecutive months; do not generalize that description into an assumption about every taxpayer, period or possible restriction. It is a portal-maintained compliance condition, so confirm the live wording and applicable policy at the time of the attempt.

If the status remains inconsistent after the update, note the message and escalate through the official support or grievance route.
Correct an e-way bill that was generated with wrong details
The FAQ says a generated e-way bill cannot generally be edited, except for Part B updates. For other incorrect details, it directs users to cancel the bill and generate a fresh one. The FAQ states a 24-hour cancellation limit; because this is a compliance-sensitive deadline, confirm the current rule, portal guidance and bill status before cancelling. Do not treat a correction as complete until the replacement document has been generated and checked. Consult the official FAQ.
Before taking action, identify which details are wrong and whether the issue concerns Part B or another part of the bill. The FAQ describes Part B updates as the exception to the general no-edit rule; it does not say that other submitted details can simply be overwritten. For other errors, the FAQ’s described route is cancellation and a fresh generation, subject to the stated time limit and current rules. Confirm that the bill’s status and the live portal guidance permit the action before cancelling, particularly if goods have already moved or the circumstances are not clear.
Once a corrected bill is generated, verify the new document rather than relying on the fact that the form submitted. Check the fields that were previously wrong against the source records and confirm that the result is the completed e-way bill. The FAQ’s cancellation guidance is procedural information, not a guarantee that every situation can be corrected in the same way; when the deadline or status is uncertain, seek current official guidance.

- Record the outcome. Determine whether you have a Part-A Slip, a completed e-way bill, or an error message. Save or note the exact message and relevant document reference.
- Complete Part B if needed. Add the vehicle number for road transport or the transport document number for another applicable case, then verify the completed bill.
- Match the named field to its source. Check invoice and date, GSTIN, address/PIN/state, item and tax details, transporter ID, transport document and vehicle information as relevant.
- Check account access and taxpayer status. Use official recovery options for login issues, verify GSTIN details, and refresh recently changed taxpayer data from the Common Portal as directed by the FAQ.
- Read the portal’s return-status message. If it reports a filing block, check GSTR-3B status and use Search > Update Block Status only where the portal indicates filed returns are not reflected.
- Escalate unresolved mismatches. Use the official grievance or support route and provide the exact error and the records you checked. The contact page provides the current official route.
For an efficient check, work in this order rather than cycling randomly through the form. A slip points to missing transport details; a validation error points to the named value and its source; failed access points to account recovery or status; a filing message points to the portal’s return-status instructions. Keep a short record of the error, the document reference and the source records you compared. That makes it easier to avoid duplicate guessing and to explain an unresolved portal-side mismatch.

When recurring manual entry becomes a bottleneck
For businesses generating e-way bills frequently, software connected through the official API may reduce duplicate entry and entry mistakes, according to the system’s stated API benefits. That does not guarantee a particular product will prevent portal-side blocks or validate every source record. Before adopting an integration, assess transaction volume, compatibility with existing billing systems, validation support and the provider’s support terms. See the official API benefits.
For occasional movements, manual portal entry may remain a workable process; a business with recurring transactions may have more reason to assess an integrated workflow. The relevant comparison is not that software removes compliance checks, but whether it fits the volume and the existing billing system, reduces duplicate entry, supports useful validation and comes with support terms the business can use. The official API material supports reduced duplicate entry and fewer entry mistakes as general benefits, not a promise that any named product will catch every error or remove a portal-side restriction.
Before relying on an integration, verify the provider, the features actually covered, India availability and support arrangements. No particular vendor or product is endorsed here. API connectivity may streamline data flow, but the business still needs accurate invoice, taxpayer, item and transport records, and must follow current portal requirements.
Use current portal guidance for changing notices
Portal notices can be time-sensitive. The official portal has displayed notices concerning HSN validation, interoperable EWB services and two-factor authentication, including a notice dated 28 March 2025 stating mandatory two-factor authentication for taxpayers and transporters from 1 April 2025. Check the live portal for current requirements and instructions rather than assuming an older notice or FAQ still governs your case. Do not rely on distance-validity figures from FAQ pages without confirming the current rule and notification; those figures are not needed to diagnose generation errors.
The portal search result also showed an advisory dated 5 August 2025 concerning interoperable EWB services and a 27 January 2026 notice about validation relaxation for certain HSNs. These are dated portal notices, not permanent troubleshooting rules. If one appears relevant to your account or transaction, open the live official notice and check its scope and current instructions. The documentation site displays a version label, but that label is not necessarily the version of the live portal frontend; do not use it to infer that your screen or requirements are current.
Official FAQ pages can contain conflicting or potentially old information, including distance-validity descriptions. Because distance validity is not needed to diagnose why generation failed, this article does not reproduce a distance figure. Check current rules and notifications separately if you need a validity calculation. For generation errors, focus on the current portal message, source data, account status and official support route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I getting only a Part-A Slip?
The E-Way Bill System FAQ says the transport details in Part B still need to be entered. For road transport, enter the vehicle number; in other applicable cases, provide the transport document number. Confirm that the portal then creates a completed e-way bill, rather than treating the slip as complete.
What should I do if the portal says “Invalid GSTIN”?
Recheck the GSTIN and taxpayer record on the GST Common Portal. If contact or address information was recently amended, follow the FAQ’s guidance to refresh details from the Common Portal and complete any required amendment there. Use the exact portal message to determine whether the GSTIN or another taxpayer detail is at issue.

Why is my GSTIN or e-way bill account frozen or blocked?
Check GSTIN and registration status and taxpayer details. For login failures, use the portal’s official username or password recovery options. If GST Portal access works but E-Way Bill System access does not, the FAQ directs users to lodge a grievance; use the official contact page for current support routes.
What if I am not receiving the OTP?
The FAQ advises checking DND settings and network conditions, and describes using the registered email OTP option. Confirm that you can access the email address registered to the account. If the official options do not resolve access, contact support through the current official route.
How do I fix an invalid vehicle number format?
Follow the format guidance shown beside the vehicle field and compare the number with the vehicle registration certificate. Avoid inventing a different registration value or format; use the live field instructions and transport record.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I edit an e-way bill after generation?
The FAQ says a generated bill generally cannot be edited except for Part B updates. For other incorrect details, it directs users to cancel and generate a fresh bill, and states a 24-hour cancellation limit. Confirm current rules, portal guidance and bill status before cancelling.
What if GSTR-3B has been filed but generation is still blocked?
The official portal points users to Search and then Update Block Status when filed returns are still shown as unfiled. Recheck the account after using it. If the filing record and portal status still disagree, save the message and use the official grievance or support route.
Is the official API error list a complete list of all portal errors?
No. The official API error-code page says its list is incomplete and directs API implementers to GetErrorList for full descriptions. Use the exact message shown in your portal and treat the list as a set of error categories, not an exhaustive catalogue.
The Bottom Line
Match the portal’s exact result to the right fix: complete Part B for a Part-A Slip, check a validation error against its source document, use official account recovery for access issues, and follow the current portal message for return-status blocks. Submitted details generally cannot be edited outside Part B updates; verify the current cancellation rules before replacing a bill. If the portal and official records still disagree, escalate through the official grievance or support route.
