The Dutch cabinet’s negotiations with employers and unions over social-security changes remain unresolved in the available reporting. The sources do not confirm that a cabinet meeting is taking place today, October 7, 2026, or what its outcome might be. The dispute concerns the AOW state pension, WW unemployment benefits and WIA disability benefits; recent coverage describes proposed changes, union opposition and a reported late-September pause—not a verified final agreement.

Is the cabinet meeting employers and unions today?

That specific claim is unconfirmed. Reporting documents talks and planned industrial action on earlier dates, but does not establish a meeting on October 7, 2026. There is also no verified account of an outcome from today. Readers should therefore treat “meeting today” as unverified rather than as a confirmed event.

The latest reported shift in the negotiations comes from a September 29 secondary summary: it said reforms to WW, WIA and disability compensation had been removed from the Social Affairs and Employment budget while employers and employees sought agreement. That account was not independently confirmed against a government publication, so it does not establish that the cuts were formally abandoned or that a settlement was reached. September 29 summary

What social-security changes were under discussion?

AOW state pension

Earlier proposals included accelerating the rise in the AOW pension age. DutchNews reported on May 28 that the cabinet had dropped that plan. This is a dated account of the proposal’s status at that point, not confirmation of a change to AOW policy today. DutchNews, May 28, 2026

WW unemployment benefits

A proposal reported in May would have cut the maximum WW benefit period from two years to one. That was a proposal under discussion, not an enacted change. On May 26, NL Times reported that the cabinet would not proceed with key WW changes in their current form. DutchNews, May 28, 2026 NL Times, May 26, 2026

WIA disability benefits

The debated WIA changes included reducing maximum payments and removing a benefit category for people considered fully and permanently disabled, according to NL Times’s May 26 account. The cabinet said it would not proceed with key measures in their then-current form; that wording does not mean every proposed change was permanently withdrawn. NL Times, May 26, 2026

What do unions and employers want?

Unions

FNV, CNV and VCP considered the cabinet’s May position inadequate. By September 8, NL Times reported that unions were demanding withdrawal of the whole package, while public-sector workers were preparing a protest in The Hague. The report attributed about 3,000 registrations to FNV and CNV; registrations are not a count of people who ultimately attended. NL Times, May 26, 2026 NL Times, September 8, 2026

Employers

VNO-NCW criticized a rigid insistence on the original proposals and called for the parties to keep negotiating. Its chair, Coen van Oostrom, said, “We think there were enough points of common interest,” DutchNews reported in May. The reporting shows convergence on continuing dialogue, not agreement between employers and unions on the substance of benefit reform. DutchNews, May 28, 2026

Cabinet

After talks broke down in May, Prime Minister Rob Jetten said, “Our door is always open,” according to DutchNews. On May 26, NL Times reported that the cabinet would not proceed with key WW and WIA proposals in their current form. Those accounts describe positions at the time; they do not confirm the terms of any later deal. DutchNews, May 28, 2026 NL Times, May 26, 2026

Have the proposed cuts been dropped?

Not conclusively, based on the available accounts. The May announcement was that key changes would not go ahead in their current form, while unions continued to reject the offer. A September 29 summary described reforms as removed from the relevant budget pending agreement. Neither report, on its own, proves that the whole package was permanently cancelled or replaced by a final agreement.

It is important to distinguish the stages reported: proposals were debated; key elements were said in May not to proceed in their current form; unions continued to press for withdrawal; and a late-September summary reported a budget removal pending agreement. These are not equivalent to a formal, comprehensive cancellation.

How large was the proposed savings target?

NL Times reported on May 31, 2026, that the welfare cuts under discussion represented a proposed €6.5 billion in savings. This was a reported target at that point in the negotiations—not confirmed savings, an enacted cut, or a figure established for October. The same report described employer and union representatives considering informal talks after a Catshuis meeting failed. NL Times, May 31, 2026

What to watch for in the next announcement

  • Whether the cabinet or Social Affairs and Employment Ministry confirms a meeting and publishes its date and participants.
  • Whether any official statement distinguishes measures formally withdrawn from those paused, delayed or still under negotiation.
  • Whether FNV, CNV, VCP and employer representatives say they have reached agreement or still support industrial action.
  • Whether the government publishes revised proposals for AOW, WW or WIA and explains their expected effect.

Until those details are confirmed, the clearest account is that the Dutch debate has shifted from the original May proposals but has not been shown in these sources to have reached a final settlement.
