The transaction brought 12 Hobbes employees into Duolingo’s design organization, created the language-learning company’s first dedicated motion-design team, and nearly doubled its Detroit office presence. The purchase price was not disclosed.
This was primarily a talent and product-capability acquisition—not the purchase of a standalone consumer app. TechCrunch reported that the deal involved cash plus equity awards for the acquired team and was closer in practice to an acqui-hire than a conventional product-company acquisition.

What Duolingo acquired
Hobbes was a Detroit studio specializing in motion design for digital products and emerging technology. Its work focused on using animation to make software interfaces clearer, more expressive, and more engaging—not simply producing conventional marketing videos or animated films.

That distinction matters because Duolingo was acquiring a team capable of working inside the product-development process. Product motion can include animated feedback after an exercise, transitions between screens, reward sequences, expressive character behavior, and visual cues that help users understand what the app is doing.
Duolingo’s announcement described Hobbes as an animation and motion-design studio and said the acquired team would join its design organization. The announcement did not disclose a transaction value.
Duolingo’s acquisition announcement provides the company’s primary account of the deal.
Why Duolingo wanted Hobbes
Duolingo has long used animated characters, game-like mechanics, rewards, visual feedback, and expressive interface states as part of its language-learning experience. The company said motion design could strengthen that approach by making the product more fun, improving the user experience, and deepening how learners interact with the app.
Duolingo Chief Design Officer Ryan Sims framed the transaction as an investment in a more animated and delightful product experience that could potentially contribute to better learning outcomes. That is Duolingo’s strategic rationale, not independent evidence that the acquisition improved education results.
The practical benefits Duolingo was seeking likely included:
- Faster access to specialized talent: Motion designers, animators, strategists, and producers could work directly with product designers and engineers.
- More consistent systems: An internal team could help establish reusable animation patterns across Duolingo’s products.
- Quicker iteration: Product teams would not need to rely as heavily on an external studio for every major motion-design project.
- Stronger game mechanics: Animation can make progress, rewards, corrections, and challenges easier to notice and more emotionally engaging.
- Closer product integration: Motion could be considered alongside usability, engineering, and learning design rather than added only at the end of a project.
Hobbes had already worked with Duolingo
This was not an acquisition of an unfamiliar company. Before the transaction, Hobbes had already worked with Duolingo on several initiatives, including Duolingo Music, product architecture, animation design systems, and other product features.
Rank #2
That prior relationship may have reduced the integration risk normally associated with bringing an outside creative team into a large product organization. Duolingo had already seen how Hobbes worked with its teams and how the studio’s motion-design expertise could be applied to the app. This is an interpretation of the transaction’s structure, not a separately reported measure of acquisition performance.
The arrangement also gave Duolingo a clearer path from outside partner to internal capability. Instead of commissioning selected projects from Hobbes, Duolingo could bring the relevant expertise into its day-to-day design and product work.
The 12-person team and Detroit footprint
The acquisition added 12 employees with backgrounds in motion design, animation, creative strategy, creative direction, and production. Duolingo specifically named Hobbes Managing Partner Nevin McRay and Partner and Creative Director Eddy Nieto.
TechCrunch reported that the Hobbes team would remain in Detroit and that its office was across the hall from Duolingo’s Detroit office. Duolingo said the transaction nearly doubled the size of its Detroit office presence.
The local detail is significant because the deal was not simply a remote talent transfer to Duolingo’s Pittsburgh headquarters. It preserved a Detroit-based creative team while expanding Duolingo’s existing presence in the city.
How the deal was financed
The purchase price was not publicly disclosed. TechCrunch reported that the consideration included cash plus equity awards for the acquired team.
TechCrunch also characterized the transaction as closer to an acqui-hire—a deal whose central value is the people and expertise being brought into the buyer—than a conventional acquisition of a product company. Duolingo’s official announcement called it an acquisition and did not use that label.

Because no transaction value was published, there is no reliable basis for estimating Hobbes’ valuation, the cost per employee, or the deal’s financial impact on Duolingo. Those figures should not be inferred from the team size or the companies’ public profiles.
The connection to Duolingo’s Gunner acquisition
Hobbes was Duolingo’s second acquisition as a public company, following its acquisition of Detroit-based design and animation studio Gunner in October 2022.
Gunner brought 15 designers, illustrators, and animators into Duolingo. That relationship had begun in 2020, before the acquisition, and Duolingo described animation as important to product engagement, motivation, and brand development. The earlier transaction therefore provides useful context for understanding why Duolingo wanted to internalize more creative expertise.
Duolingo described Hobbes as affiliated with Gunner. The available announcements do not establish the precise ownership or corporate relationship between the two studios, so “affiliated” is the safer description.
Together, the transactions show a repeated pattern: Duolingo was building specialized creative capacity in Detroit through relationships with studios that had already worked with the company. The evidence supports that pattern, but does not establish a formally named corporate “Detroit strategy.”

What changed inside Duolingo’s design organization
The most concrete organizational result was the creation of Duolingo’s first dedicated motion-design team. Duolingo said its existing animation pipeline had emphasized character and technical animation, while Hobbes added deeper expertise in motion design for product user experiences.
The difference is functional:
- Character animation brings Duolingo’s mascots and other illustrated elements to life.
- Technical animation may support production workflows and animated assets.
- Product motion design shapes how the interface responds, guides attention, communicates status, and reinforces interaction.
In a language-learning app, that third category can affect how users experience corrections, streaks, goals, rewards, practice sessions, and new features. It can also help connect the product’s visual identity with the mechanics that keep users returning.

For Duolingo, the acquisition was therefore less about entering a new line of business and more about moving an important creative capability closer to the center of product development.
More animation does not automatically mean better learning
Duolingo linked a more animated experience with greater delight and potentially better learning outcomes. That claim should be treated as a company belief and product rationale, not as a demonstrated result of the Hobbes acquisition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe announcement did not publish independent evidence showing that the transaction improved retention, comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, course completion, or other educational outcomes. It also did not provide post-acquisition data isolating Hobbes’ contribution.
Animation can support usability when it explains a change, provides timely feedback, or makes an important action easier to recognize. It can also create costs if it distracts from the lesson, increases cognitive load, affects performance, consumes battery, or makes the interface harder to use.
A complete evaluation would need to consider questions such as:
- Were motion effects optional or compatible with reduced-motion settings?
- Did the animation remain usable for people with visual or motion sensitivities?
- Did it perform reliably on older or lower-powered devices?
- Did it improve comprehension and retention, or mainly increase engagement and session frequency?
- Were product changes tested against accessibility and learning-quality measures?
The cited acquisition materials do not answer those questions. The transaction demonstrates Duolingo’s investment in motion design; it does not, by itself, prove that more motion produces better educational results.
What remains unknown
- The purchase price and detailed financial terms were not disclosed.
- There is no public transaction-level breakdown of cash versus equity awards.
- The available announcement does not identify which later product features were specifically created by the former Hobbes team.
- No independent post-acquisition measurement of learning outcomes, retention, revenue, accessibility, or performance was provided.
- The available sources do not establish whether Hobbes continued operating independently after the acquisition.
Bottom line
Duolingo’s Hobbes transaction was a capability and talent acquisition completed on July 9, 2024. The 12-person Detroit team gave Duolingo its first dedicated motion-design function and expanded a creative presence that had already grown through the 2022 Gunner acquisition.
The strategic bet was straightforward: bring product-motion expertise in-house so animation could be developed more closely with Duolingo’s interface, game mechanics, characters, and learning experience. The company’s claim that this could improve learning remains a proposition to test, not a result established by the acquisition announcement.
