Dumb Money is a 2023 comedy-drama-biography about the GameStop trading episode, told through investor Keith Gill and an ensemble of people drawn into the frenzy. Directed by Craig Gillespie and adapted from Ben Mezrich’s book The Antisocial Network, it is a brisk, sympathetic dramatization—not a documentary or a complete account of the market events.

What is Dumb Money about?

The film follows Keith Gill, played by Paul Dano, as his online posts and investment in GameStop attract attention during the extraordinary run-up in the stock. Its ensemble also follows smaller investors, financial-industry figures and others affected by the episode. Sony describes it as a “David vs. Goliath tale”; that phrase captures the studio’s promotional framing, rather than a neutral explanation of what happened.

Black Bear credits Craig Gillespie as director and Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo as writers. The cast includes Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Anthony Ramos, Nick Offerman, Vincent D’Onofrio, Talia Ryder, Myha’la Herrold and Dane DeHaan, alongside Dano.

How closely does the film follow real events?

Dumb Money is based on Mezrich’s 2021 book, but it dramatizes a contested financial event. TIME reported that the filmmakers spoke with investor participants and drew on the book, while some of the smaller-investor characters are fictional or composites. TIME also reported that the filmmakers did not have direct contact with Gill. Treat scenes, dialogue and character arcs as dramatic storytelling, not documentary evidence.

Gill’s own public account differs from any implication that his posts were a coordinated solicitation. In testimony to the House Financial Services Committee in February 2021, he said, as quoted by TIME: “My investment in GameStop and my posts on social media were entirely my own. I did not solicit anyone to buy or sell the stock for my own profit.” That statement is attributable to Gill; it does not settle every question about the wider episode.

What happened in the GameStop trading episode?

The January 2021 episode involved unusually high short interest, rapid changes in GameStop’s price and trading volume, increased attention on Reddit and in broader media, and temporary trading restrictions at some broker-dealers. The SEC staff report documented short interest equal to 122.97% of GameStop’s float in January 2021 and an intraday high of $483 on January 28, 2021. These are historical figures, not current stock information.

Short interest can exceed 100% of a company’s float when shares are lent more than once. The SEC staff observed that short sellers covering positions likely contributed to price rises in some discrete periods, but its account does not reduce the full price movement to one cause. It also identified broker restrictions, digital engagement practices, payment for order flow, dark pools and wholesalers, and short-selling dynamics as areas for further study. Several brokerages restricted trading in GME on January 28, 2021.

For primary-source detail on the market mechanics and the limits of what can be concluded, read the SEC staff report on the January 2021 market events. It serves a different purpose from the film: the movie builds a character-led story, while the report documents market-structure findings.

What is the film’s point of view?

The movie takes a sympathetic, populist view of smaller investors. Associated Press reviewer Mark Kennedy described it as one that “wears its love of the little guy on its sleeve.” That perspective gives the story emotional momentum, but it is not a substitute for the SEC’s account of the trading activity or for a balanced examination of every participant’s incentives.

A line quoted by AP—“I wouldn’t take investment advice from a guy in a cat shirt”—is spoken by a character in the film. It is film dialogue, not a quote from a real participant.

Should you watch Dumb Money?

  • Watch it for the story: It is suited to viewers who want an ensemble-driven, fast-moving account with a populist frame and character context around the GameStop episode.
  • Look elsewhere for market evidence: If your main interest is how short interest, trading, broker restrictions and market structure fit together, consult the SEC staff report rather than relying on a dramatization.
  • Use both for different purposes: The film offers narrative interpretation; the SEC report offers a primary-source record. Mezrich’s The Antisocial Network is the source book behind the adaptation, not an official market report.

As listed by Rotten Tomatoes on October 4, 2026, the film was rated R, ran 1 hour 45 minutes, and was categorized as comedy, drama and biography. The site showed an 84% Tomatometer score from 234 reviews and an 85% Popcornmeter score from 250+ verified ratings on that date; scores and counts can change. The Associated Press review gives a three-out-of-four-star rating and cites pervasive language, sexual material and drug use in its R-rating note.

For the book behind the film, look for Ben Mezrich’s The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees (2021). It offers another narrative account; for primary market-structure findings, use the SEC report.
