Neither Dubai International Airport (DXB) nor Zayed International Airport (AUH) is automatically the better fallback. Choose only after an airline confirms a flight that works for your destination and ticket, and you have checked whether you can reach that airport, enter or transit the UAE as required, and handle your baggage and check-in.
Start with a confirmed flight, not an airport status page
An airport being open does not mean your particular flight is operating or that a seat is available. Abu Dhabi’s live travel advisory describes AUH as operational while directing travelers to check current flight information with their airline. Its disruption guidance says alternative arrangements are provided where possible; that is not a guarantee for every passenger or itinerary.
Check the operating airline’s flight status and contact it or your booking provider before setting out for a different emirate. Confirm the destination, departure time, ticket availability, and whether the flight is actually operating. The relevant airport’s live arrivals or departures page can be a useful cross-check, but it does not replace airline confirmation.
Compare the whole journey and its cost
A flight from the other airport is not a simple airport connection. It may mean a road journey, a different ticket, border formalities, baggage collection, and a fresh check-in. Compare the options against the details that can change your out-of-pocket costs and the chance of missing a flight:

- Adjustable & Resilient Telescopic Handle: Customize your travel experience with the durable, flexible telescopic handle, which adjusts smoothly to your preferred height. Whether you’re navigating through crowded spaces or taking a quick turn, the handle ensures comfort and stability
- Ticket recovery: Ask whether the airline or booking provider can rebook or refund your existing ticket, and what happens to it if you buy a separate flight yourself. Dubai’s passenger welfare annex describes airline support for rebooking, cancellations, refunds, and disruption updates. Your individual options depend on your ticket and circumstances, so confirm them with the carrier or provider.
- Ground transfer: Check the current transport schedule, pickup point, journey time, availability, and fare from where you are to the alternate airport. AUH lists taxis, ride-hailing, rental cars, and private transfers. It also promotes its Airport Express between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Confirm current schedules and pickup instructions directly; the airport pages do not establish a reliable door-to-door travel-time comparison.
- Entry and baggage: Check whether you can enter or transit the UAE under the plan, whether you must clear immigration, and whether you need to collect and recheck baggage. These requirements depend on your itinerary and ticket; verify them with the airline and relevant authorities before leaving your current airport.
- Time and assistance: Allow for road delays, check-in deadlines, security, and any mobility or other assistance you need. Ask the airline what support it can arrange, including meals or accommodation if relevant, rather than assuming airport status determines your entitlement.
There is no reliable basis in the consulted official material for ranking DXB and AUH by disruption frequency, cancellation rate, average recovery time, or resilience. A comparison by those measures would not tell you which specific flight is a workable fallback.
Keep an airport transfer separate from an AUH connection
AUH’s transfer guide explains connections within Zayed International Airport: follow Transfer signs, complete transfer security, check the onward gate, and verify with your originating airline whether baggage is through-checked. The airline sets the minimum connection time for your itinerary.

The guide gives 45 minutes as an example for a possible Etihad-to-Etihad connection. That is not a general minimum or a guarantee that a particular connection is feasible; ask the airline for the requirement that applies to your booking.
Switching between AUH and DXB is different: it involves travel by road between airports and may also require immigration, baggage collection, and a new check-in. Do not treat an itinerary across the two airports as an ordinary airside connection.

Use disruption instructions that apply to your specific booking
Policies and operational directions can change during an exceptional event. On 5 March 2026, Abu Dhabi authorities told confirmed-ticket holders to contact their airline and travel to AUH only after receiving guidance on when to arrive. The same notice reported more than 4,300 complimentary hotel rooms across 74 hotels for approximately 7,000 passengers during that specific disruption. That was a dated response, not a standing passenger entitlement.
Abu Dhabi also documented limited and phased resumptions in March 2026. Those events illustrate why a past recovery, airport-wide operational statement, or old flight listing cannot establish that a future flight will run. Follow current airline and airport directions for your own flight.

A practical decision sequence
- Check the flight: Contact the operating airline and check the relevant airport’s live departures. Confirm the flight is operating and that a seat or rebooking is available before traveling to another emirate.
- Protect the existing ticket: Ask the airline or booking provider about rebooking, refunds, baggage handling, and whether buying another flight independently affects your original booking. Use official contact channels and keep your reservation details current.
- Check border and baggage requirements: Confirm entry or transit eligibility and whether immigration clearance, baggage collection, and a new check-in are required for your specific itinerary.
- Arrange the ground journey: Check live transport availability, schedule, pickup instructions, likely journey time, and cost. Book only when the flight and your ability to reach the airport are confirmed.
- For an AUH connection: Follow Transfer signs, complete transfer security, check your onward gate, and ask the airline about its minimum connection time and baggage through-check.
- Follow event-specific instructions: If the airport or airline has issued directions for a disruption, use those instructions—including any requirement to wait for an arrival time—rather than traveling based on general airport status.
