DRW and Marex have completed a total-return over-the-counter (OTC) swap referencing the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, with the trade represented on Canton, a distributed-ledger network. In an October 13, 2026 announcement, S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), Kaiko and Derivnex described it as the first OTC swap transaction on Canton and the first OTC derivative referencing a fully tokenized index on distributed-ledger infrastructure. Those “first” claims are the companies’ descriptions; they have not been independently verified here.
What the swap referenced—and what it did not
The benchmark was S&P DJI’s iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, not the S&P 500. The announcement says DRW and Marex entered into a total-return OTC swap referencing that index. In general, an OTC swap is a privately negotiated contract that can give counterparties exposure to an asset or index without requiring them to own it directly. The announcement does not provide the trade’s legal terms, so that general description should not be taken as a statement of this swap’s specific obligations.

What it means to tokenize an index
Here, tokenization refers to making the benchmark available in a digital form intended for use in financial workflows on Canton. According to the announcement, Kaiko’s token combines benchmark data with access permissions and usage rules. The stated aim is to enable authorized participants to use the data in digital workflows while preserving S&P DJI’s licensing and intellectual-property controls.
#1 Best Overall
The token is not described as ownership of the index, shares in an index fund, or a freely transferable claim on the index’s constituents. Nor does the announcement publish technical specifications for the token or its permissions. It describes a way to use licensed benchmark data within a digital transaction process.
How the trade was represented and valued on Canton
Kaiko supplied benchmark data
Kaiko distributed signed official S&P DJI index values, which Derivnex used to value the position over its lifecycle. The announcement does not explain the signing method, update frequency, or technical validation process.

Derivnex represented the swap
Derivnex represented the trade on Canton as a smart contract containing its transaction terms. The release describes that representation as a shared, synchronized record for DRW and Marex to coordinate valuation and other lifecycle events. It says the trade representation was intended to remain with the transaction throughout its lifecycle; it does not publish the contract code or specify how legal documents relate to the digital record.
The workflow uses a standardized derivatives model
Derivnex incorporates the Common Domain Model (CDM), which the announcement describes as a standardized digital representation of derivatives transactions and lifecycle events. In this setup, the model is part of how the platform represents trade and lifecycle information; the release does not provide comparative evidence that this approach is faster or more efficient than other systems.
What each participant contributed
- DRW and Marex: the counterparties to the total-return OTC swap.
- S&P DJI: the provider of the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index and its official index values.
- Kaiko: the provider of the tokenized benchmark representation and distributor of signed index values.
- Derivnex: the platform used to execute and represent the trade on Canton, with a shared record for lifecycle coordination.
What is planned, and what is not yet established
The announcement says future functionality is expected to connect Derivnex-managed positions with digital cash and collateral on Canton. If implemented, that could allow margin, collateral and contractual payments to move on the same infrastructure. It is a planned capability, not a feature the announcement says was live for this swap.
The release does not state the transaction’s size or report adoption, savings, speed, or other measured outcomes. Its claims about the transaction being a first and about the workflow’s benefits should therefore be read as the companies’ announcement, not as independently established market-wide findings.

Why the announcement may matter to institutional markets
The transaction brings together licensed index data, a negotiated derivative and a digital record intended to support lifecycle coordination. Its significance is as an example of how the participating firms say those elements can be combined on distributed-ledger infrastructure—not proof that tokenized benchmarks or on-chain derivatives have become standard practice.
