What happened to DraftKings stock on October 5?
Yahoo Finance reported that DraftKings (NASDAQ: DKNG) climbed more than 7% to around $20 in recent trading on October 5, 2026, following Bank of America’s rating change. The report described the stock as down more than 40% year to date as of that session. These are dated market observations, not current prices or a statement of where the shares closed. Bank of America moved its rating from Neutral to Buy but retained its $27 price target. The target was therefore not raised as part of the reported upgrade. A price target is an analyst estimate, not a promised future price.
Why did Bank of America upgrade DKNG?
The analysts’ reported case combined the shares’ steep pullback with concerns they viewed as overdone: investor worries about unfavorable NFL outcomes and uncertainty around DraftKings’ investment in prediction markets. Yahoo Finance quoted the analysts saying, “We think the recent pullback creates an attractive opportunity, and we increasingly believe [prediction markets] are a win-win,” and, “In our view, the stock reaction is overdone.” The quoted report does not identify the individual analysts, so the statements are attributable to Bank of America analysts as reported by Yahoo Finance.

The prediction-market estimates
Bank of America analysts estimated that DraftKings’ prediction-market business could produce $400 million in fees in 2027, plus $200 million to $400 million from market making, according to Yahoo Finance. Those figures are third-party-reported analyst projections; they are not realized revenue, company guidance, or independently confirmed forecasts.
The analysts also argued that regulatory setbacks could remove an overhang on the wider business. That is their scenario, not an established outcome. Regulatory treatment could affect whether and how prediction-market products operate, while sports results can influence the company’s financial performance.

How the analyst thesis compares with DraftKings’ own outlook
DraftKings’ February 12, 2026 earnings release reported fourth-quarter 2025 revenue of $1.989 billion, up 43% from $1.393 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. The same release set fiscal 2026 revenue guidance at $6.5 billion to $6.9 billion and adjusted EBITDA guidance at $700 million to $900 million. DraftKings said those ranges reflected expected investment in DraftKings Predictions, launches in line-of-sight jurisdictions, and planning as conditions evolve; they excluded potential variance related to sports outcomes. The figures concern different periods and measures: the analyst estimates focus on prediction-market fees and market making in 2027, while DraftKings’ fiscal 2026 guidance covers company revenue and adjusted EBITDA. They should not be treated as interchangeable or added together.

What risks should investors weigh?
DraftKings’ fiscal 2025 Form 10-K is the primary source for its formal descriptions of the business, prediction-market investment, Railbird acquisition, and risk disclosures. - Regulation: The prediction-market opportunity depends on regulatory treatment. The analysts’ suggestion that setbacks could ease an overhang is a thesis, not evidence that regulation will resolve favorably.
- Sports outcomes: DraftKings explicitly noted that potential variance related to sports outcomes was excluded from its cited fiscal 2026 guidance.
- Execution and estimates: The 2027 prediction-market figures are analyst projections, and the cited report does not establish that those revenues will materialize.
- Changing information: Ratings, targets, share prices, forecasts, and company guidance can change; the cited upgrade and figures reflect reports available on their stated dates.
Is now the time to buy DraftKings?
The October 5 upgrade offers a bullish analyst view, not a definitive answer for every investor. Whether DKNG fits depends on an investor’s assessment of the company’s core sportsbook and iGaming business, the scale and economics of prediction markets, regulatory outcomes, sports-related volatility, and the difference between analyst projections and management guidance. The cited market move and forecasts alone do not establish that the stock is suitable for an individual portfolio.
