The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 253.38 points, or 0.5%, to 51,521.28 on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Caterpillar shares gained, while the available reporting names Procter & Gamble among the stocks highlighting the rally but does not establish its closing move or either stock’s exact contribution to the Dow.

How the major indexes finished

The session was positive for three major U.S. indexes, but not for all of them. The S&P 500 set a record closing high, while the small-cap Russell 2000 fell.

Index Change Close Record status
Dow Jones Industrial Average +253.38 points (+0.5%) 51,521.28 No record status stated in the Associated Press close report.
S&P 500 +44.98 points (+0.6%) 7,818.93 Record close.
Nasdaq Composite +122.48 points (+0.4%) 27,599.79 No record status stated in the Associated Press close report.
Russell 2000 −16.84 points (−0.6%) 2,830.30 No record status stated in the Associated Press close report.

These closing figures were reported by the Associated Press. The Russell’s decline is a reminder that gains in the large-cap indexes did not mean every segment of the market advanced.

What is verified about Caterpillar and Procter & Gamble

A MarketWatch headline indexed by Finviz singled out gains in Caterpillar and Procter & Gamble as highlights of the Dow rally. The available source material verifies a positive move for Caterpillar, but not a comparable closing figure for P&G or a precise Dow-point contribution for either company.

Company Verified October 6, 2026 move What the available figures establish
Caterpillar (CAT) Closed at $863.44, up $15.30 (1.80%) A positive session move; no exact contribution to the Dow’s point gain is established.
Procter & Gamble (PG) Closing move not stated in the available material The indexed MarketWatch headline names P&G as a rally highlight, but the underlying article text and a verified closing figure are unavailable here.

Caterpillar’s displayed session data are on Google Finance. The headline is indexed on Finviz’s P&G news page; that listing alone does not provide the story’s attribution calculation or P&G’s closing percentage move.

Why stocks rose, and what remained a pressure

The Associated Press described expectations for continued corporate profit growth as support for stocks, while elevated bond yields remained a competing concern. FactSet analysts expected S&P 500 earnings per share to grow nearly 30% year over year; that figure is an expectation, not a reported result. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to 5.28% from 5.31% late Monday, and oil steadied, according to the AP’s session report.

Rank #2

Company-specific developments also featured in the day’s news: Constellation Energy agreed to supply Google with electricity, and Lamb Weston reported quarterly results that were better than expected. These are contextual factors, not proof that any one development caused the broad market move.

What a 253-point Dow gain does—and does not—tell you

The point change describes the difference between the index’s closing levels; the percentage change gives that move relative to the prior close. Neither figure, by itself, shows how many Dow components rose or how much each stock added. The Dow is price-weighted, so a component’s share price and daily move matter to its index effect; assigning an exact contribution requires the relevant calculation, which the available reporting does not provide for Caterpillar or P&G.

For a personal investor, this one-session result is a record of a past trading day, not a forecast or a recommendation to buy either company. The mixed index performance also argues against treating the Dow’s advance as evidence that every type of stock rose.
