DoubleDown Interactive’s 2020 IPO Filing: Proposed Raise, Results and What Happened Next

DoubleDown Interactive filed for an IPO in 2020, saying it hoped to raise up to $100 million and list on Nasdaq under ticker DDI. That was a proposed offering, not the final amount: the company completed its IPO in September 2021, offering 6,316,000 American Depositary Shares at $18 each. The filing-era figures behind the “fast-growing and profitable” description were historical: for 2019, DoubleDown reported $273.6 million in revenue and $36.3 million in net income, alongside 2.9 million monthly players.

What did DoubleDown Interactive announce in 2020?

GeekWire reported on June 3, 2020, that DoubleDown Interactive had filed for an IPO. The company planned to list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol DDI and sought to raise up to $100 million. That figure described the intended maximum at the time of the report; it was not the amount ultimately raised. GeekWire’s June 3, 2020 report covered the filing and its financial disclosures.

How much revenue and profit did DoubleDown report?

The filing-era figures reported by GeekWire showed revenue of $273.6 million and net income of $36.3 million for 2019. The company reported net income of $25.1 million for 2018. It also reported 2.9 million monthly players in 2019. These figures describe those specific historical periods, not current results.

The figures help explain the 2020 description of DoubleDown as both fast-growing and profitable, but they do not establish a continuous growth trend: the available player figure is for 2019, and the profit figures cover 2018 and 2019. DoubleDown’s filing also said it had to keep games engaging to retain paying players, noting: “To retain paying players, we must devote significant resources so that the games they play retain their interest and motivate them to purchase virtual chips through incentives and engaging content.”

How does DoubleDown’s social casino business make money?

DoubleDown develops and operates digital games for mobile and web platforms, including social casino games. The company says these games are free to play and that substantially all social casino revenue comes from players’ optional purchases of virtual chips. The chips are in-game items, not cash or cash equivalents: they cannot be redeemed for monetary value or transferred between games or players. The company’s 2020 registration statement describes the model and its disclosures.

In that filing, DoubleDown attributed a third-place ranking for DoubleDown Casino among social casino game titles by 2020 revenue to Eilers & Krejcik. The company also attributed to the firm a historical estimate that the global social casino market was $7.0 billion in 2020, with a forecast of $8.6 billion by 2025. Those are third-party estimates and a forecast made at the time, not current market measurements.

Did DoubleDown Interactive go public, and at what price?

Yes. DoubleDown’s 2021 annual report records that the company completed its IPO in September 2021, offering 6,316,000 American Depositary Shares at $18 per share. This completed offering superseded the 2020 filing’s proposal to raise up to $100 million. DoubleDown’s 2021 annual report records the offering terms.

How did the business perform in 2024 and 2025?

In its fiscal 2025 Form 20-F, filed in 2026, DoubleDown reported revenue of $359.9 million and net income of $102.7 million for 2025. For 2024, it reported revenue of $341.3 million and net income of $124.4 million. Revenue rose between those years while net income fell. These full-year figures are not directly comparable with the 2019 filing-era results as a complete picture of the business: the available evidence does not provide monthly player figures for each intervening year.

The same filing reported social casino payer conversion of 8.2% in 2025, compared with 6.7% in 2024. DoubleDown Casino accounted for 76.1% of company revenue in 2025, down from 88.6% in 2024. The flagship game therefore remained a major source of revenue even as its share declined. The company identifies reliance on DoubleDown Casino, distribution through third-party platforms, and potential social opposition or regulatory action among its business risks. DoubleDown’s fiscal 2025 Form 20-F provides the financial and risk disclosures.
