A hurried transfer or misconfigured wallet upgrade can cause immediate losses, while the feared cryptographic break remains a warning, not a demonstrated attack on Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet keys.
What prompted the warning?
On October 7, 2026, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the industry to plan calmly for what he called “bunker mode.” He warned that AI-assisted mathematical advances could threaten elliptic-curve digital signatures (ECDSA) before quantum computers arrive. In the worst case he described, a break could come within months rather than years. That is Drake’s scenario—not an established capability or consensus forecast.
Drake proposed a controlled migration to fresh addresses whose public keys had not been exposed onchain, with sophisticated, large holders moving first. Reporting on his proposal and Buterin’s response appeared in The Block, CoinDesk and Cointelegraph.
What did Buterin advise crypto holders to do?
Buterin’s message was not to dismiss the threat, but to avoid panic. As quoted by The Block, he said: “I don’t recommend anyone scramble to move their funds to new wallets today.” He also said keeping assets at addresses that have never signed a transaction can be a good precaution if moving them is easy. His qualification matters: a fresh address may limit public-key exposure until it signs a transaction, but it does not make a transfer risk-free or establish that a particular wallet device solves the concern.

Buterin warned that a rushed or misconfigured upgrade can itself cause substantial losses: “It’s very easy to lose funds from a misconfigured rushed upgrade, so … don’t rush anything.” The practical tension is between a possible future cryptographic risk and the immediate risks of making a transfer incorrectly. The reports do not support individualized instructions to move funds.
Can AI crack crypto wallets now?
The reports describe a possible future threat, not a working attack. CoinDesk reported that no practical attack on Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet keys had been demonstrated at the time of its report. Drake’s “months, not years” scenario is a worst-case warning, not a proven deadline.

There is also no settled industry view that the underlying cryptography has weakened. The Block reported that Coinbase head of cryptography Yehuda Lindell said there was “no evidence whatsoever” that longstanding assumptions behind elliptic-curve cryptography had weakened. Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi, by contrast, called Drake’s warning “a very sober call.” Those are attributed opinions, not proof that a break is imminent or impossible. The Block’s report on the differing reactions captures that disagreement.

Buterin’s concern extends beyond elliptic-curve systems. He warned that AI-assisted mathematical progress could also affect lattice-based cryptography, including ML-DSA and fully homomorphic encryption. He favored conservative lattice parameters and hash-based constructions where possible. This broadens the discussion of what cryptographic systems may need to withstand; it does not mean lattice-based systems have been broken.

What should a wallet holder take away?
- Buterin takes AI-related cryptographic risk seriously, but advises against scrambling to move funds.
- An address that has never signed a transaction may have less public-key exposure, but that is not a guarantee of safety.
- Drake’s accelerated timeline is a worst-case possibility, not a demonstrated attack schedule.
- Any decision involving a transfer should account for the chance of user error as well as the uncertain future threat; these reports do not justify a one-size-fits-all migration instruction.
