“Don’t Buy the Dip”: What the 2025 Bitcoin ETF Warning Said—and What It Didn’t

In February 2025, Geoff Kendrick tied the appeal of buying Bitcoin’s dip to a potential $1 billion spot ETF outflow day. Here’s what that conditional warning meant—and what it did not prove.

In February 2025, Standard Chartered crypto research head Geoff Kendrick cautioned traders against buying Bitcoin’s dip immediately, saying he would want to see a day with $1 billion in spot Bitcoin ETF outflows first. Forbes reported the warning as Bitcoin fell sharply and concerns about inflation, Federal Reserve policy and risk-off markets intensified. It was a conditional, dated analyst view—not a current market signal, a confirmed forecast or personal financial advice.

What was the Bitcoin “don’t buy the dip” warning?

In a February 25, 2025 update, Forbes reported that Bitcoin had fallen below $90,000, down 10% in 24 hours, and that the Crypto Fear & Greed Index had entered “extreme fear” territory. Those figures describe conditions reported at that time; they are not current price or sentiment readings.

Geoff Kendrick, then identified as Standard Chartered’s head of crypto research, said: “Before buying the dip is attractive I think we get a $1 billion ETF outflow day,” Forbes reported. He was describing a condition he wanted to see before treating a dip as attractive, not declaring that Bitcoin would necessarily reach a particular price or that an outflow day would make a purchase safe. Forbes cited $583 million as the previous worst day for spot Bitcoin ETF outflows. Both flow figures are historical figures in the article, not present-day ETF data.

Why did the story link Bitcoin risk to the Federal Reserve?

The article placed Kendrick’s caution in a wider market setting: renewed stagflation concerns, persistent inflation and uncertainty over whether the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates. Stagflation means weak economic growth occurring alongside elevated inflation; that combination can complicate central-bank decisions and unsettle investors.

Forbes reported that a Bank of America global fund-manager survey showed expectations of U.S. stagflation at a seven-month high. It also reported market pricing that implied a 97.5% chance of no rate change at the Fed’s next meeting in March 2025, compared with 75.5% a month earlier. These are Forbes’s dated reports of the survey and market pricing, not independently established current measures.

The story included differing interpretations of the outlook rather than one agreed market forecast. Some analysts saw lower Treasury yields as potentially supportive over a longer horizon; others emphasized near-term risk-off pressure and the possibility of further declines. Jack McIntyre, portfolio manager for Brandywine Global’s fixed-income strategies, said: “Stagflation has definitely re-emerged as a possibility because we have these policies that could hurt consumer demand even while persistent inflation limits the Federal Reserve’s ability to maneuver.” Tim Urbanowicz, chief investment strategist at Innovator Capital Management, said: “What continues to concern us more than the risk of inflation is stagflation,”

What the warning can—and cannot—tell a Bitcoin investor

It was a short-term, conditional view

Kendrick’s reported threshold concerned ETF outflows and the immediate appeal of buying a dip. It was not a complete valuation model, a long-term Bitcoin thesis or evidence that a $1 billion outflow day would mark a bottom. Nor does the article establish whether his possible decline toward $80,000 occurred. A forecast is not an outcome.

It does not settle whether Bitcoin fits your plan

A short-term trading signal is different from deciding whether to hold a volatile asset over a longer period. That decision depends on your time horizon, ability to tolerate large losses, broader finances and the role you intend the investment to play. The February 2025 article does not establish that buying Bitcoin, buying a Bitcoin ETF or waiting for a specific price is appropriate for any individual.
