Some of Elon Musk’s suggestions for cabinet posts reportedly went unheeded during Donald Trump’s presidential transition in November 2024. But the claim is limited: Musk said he had offered opinions on some candidates, while many selections happened without his knowledge and appointment decisions belonged to Trump.
What the November 2024 report says
Ashley Bardhan’s Futurism article, published November 22, 2024, reported that Trump was already disregarding some of Musk’s suggestions for cabinet positions. The article cited a New York Times report for its account that multiple pleas from Musk for cabinet members went unheard. It did not provide a complete list of those recommendations or the appointments involved.

What Musk said about his role
The article quoted Musk describing a voice in some candidate discussions, not control over the process. In an X post reproduced by Bardhan, Musk said: “While I have offered my opinion on some cabinet candidates, many selections occur without my knowledge, and decisions are 100 percent that of the President.” The original post was not independently checked for this account, so the quotation is attributable here to Futurism’s reproduction of it.
Influence is not the same as authority
The article also relayed former Trump chief of staff Mick Mulvaney’s assessment that Musk and other technology leaders influenced preparations for Trump’s second term to a degree not seen from other business leaders in past presidential elections. That is an attributed assessment, not a measured finding about how much influence Musk exercised over individual nominations.

#1 Best Overall
Read together, the accounts describe access and participation alongside limits: Musk could offer opinions and reportedly influence aspects of transition planning, while Trump retained appointment authority and made some selections without Musk’s knowledge. The reporting supports the narrower claim that some suggestions were ignored; it does not show that Trump ignored all of Musk’s advice or establish why any particular nominee was chosen.

What this report does—and does not—establish
- It does establish: Bardhan’s November 22, 2024 article reported that some cabinet pleas from Musk went unheard and reproduced Musk’s statement that many selections happened without his knowledge.
- It does not establish: a comprehensive list of rejected suggestions, a measure of Musk’s overall influence, or the reasons behind specific appointment decisions.
- Its time frame matters: the article appeared after the 2024 election, when Trump was president-elect. It does not establish the current state of their relationship.
