Domain Parking: How to Monetize an Unused Domain

Domain parking can monetize genuine visits to an unused domain through click-based ads, sometimes alongside a sales link. Learn the setup steps, provider rules and why earnings are uncertain.

How do I make money from a parked domain? You point an eligible domain to a provider-hosted landing page, where ads may earn revenue when visitors click them. Some parking pages also let visitors inquire about buying the domain. Revenue is not guaranteed: the model depends on genuine traffic and valid clicks, and the available evidence does not establish typical earnings or a best-paying provider.

How domain parking works

When someone visits a parked domain, its DNS settings direct the visitor to a landing page hosted by a parking provider. That page may display advertising links selected for the domain or its visitors. If a visitor clicks an ad, the domain owner may receive a share of the resulting revenue, subject to the provider’s rules and payment terms.

Visitors can arrive by typing the address directly, following an old bookmark, or finding it through search results. ICANN’s June 2008 Policy Issue Brief: Domain Name Monetization describes these kinds of traffic, but it is historical context, not a current measure of earnings or market performance. Afternic and Sedo describe their present-day services as showing relevant or thematically matched ads; those provider descriptions do not guarantee traffic, clicks, or valuable ad interactions.

Parking can also serve as a temporary holding page while you retain the domain or offer it for sale. Afternic says its CashParking page automatically includes a domain-for-sale link, while Sedo offers parking as a way to monetize a domain. Treat those as provider features, not proof that a domain will attract a buyer.

How do I park my domain?

The general process is to choose a provider, add the domain to your account, complete any required payment or certification steps, and point the domain’s nameservers to the provider. Nameserver changes route visitors to the parking service; the provider’s current dashboard and instructions should take precedence because labels and requirements can change.

  1. Check eligibility and rights. Confirm you control the domain and have the rights needed to use it. Review the provider’s traffic rules and payment requirements before changing DNS.
  2. Create or access a provider account. Complete any required identity, parking certification, or payment setup.
  3. Add the domain and select its parking option. Confirm whether the page will show ads, a sale link, or both.
  4. Change the domain’s nameservers. Enter the exact nameservers specified by the provider in your registrar’s domain or DNS settings. DNS updates may take time to propagate; follow the provider’s status checks and troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Verify the result and monitor it. Visit the domain and confirm that it resolves to the expected page. Use the provider’s reporting to review traffic and earnings, if available.

Afternic setup example

Afternic’s CashParking instructions say to create or access an account, configure payment details, add the domain to the portfolio and select CashParking, then set the domain’s nameservers to NS1.AFTERNIC.COM and NS2.AFTERNIC.COM. Afternic says the parking page automatically includes a for-sale link. Its separate sales lander page recommends CashParking for domains with high organic traffic; that is provider guidance rather than an independent comparison. Confirm the live dashboard labels and instructions when setting up.

Sedo setup example

Sedo describes its parking as free and says users must register, complete parking certification, add their domains, and change nameservers to NS1.SEDOPARKING.COM and NS2.SEDOPARKING.COM. Its parking page says activation follows after 24 hours. These are Sedo-specific instructions and may change, so check the current page and account dashboard before relying on them.

What to compare when choosing a parking provider

Compare the terms and tools that affect how the domain works and whether you can use the service as intended. The available information does not establish which provider produces higher earnings.

  • Landing-page features: Does the page display ads, a link for prospective buyers, or both?
  • Setup and DNS: What account steps, certification, payment details, nameserver changes, and activation time does the provider require?
  • Traffic rules: Which traffic sources are permitted, and what does the provider prohibit as artificial or misleading?
  • Payments: What is the minimum payment, when are valid earnings paid, and what information or eligibility conditions apply?
  • Reporting: What data can you see about visits and revenue, and is it detailed enough to evaluate whether parking is useful for your domain?

Traffic quality, domain rights, and compliance

Parking revenue depends on valid activity, not merely sending people to a page. Sedo’s Rules for Domain Parkers, labeled Version November 2023, prohibit artificial page views, clicking your own ads, asking others to click, offering incentives, misleading visitors, and unauthorized redirects, among other traffic-generation practices. Sedo says violations may result in account termination and forfeiture or offset of click balance.

Sedo’s separate referral traffic policy says paid search ads may not send users directly or indirectly to a parked domain. It also excludes fake or manipulated visits without a living person’s good-faith intent. Read the current rules before buying traffic or running referral campaigns; do not assume that a traffic source is acceptable just because it produces visits.

You also need rights to the domain. Sedo’s rules direct users to check trademark rights, including through WIPO’s Global Brand Database. A domain that conflicts with another party’s rights can create legal and account risks, so investigate before parking or offering it for sale.

Sedo payment terms: what its rules say

Sedo’s November 2023 parker rules state that payments are made through methods that depend on residence, usually on or about 15 business days after month-end for prior-month valid earnings. The stated minimum is $20. Payment also depends on account certification and valid payment information; the rules say unissued earnings below the minimum may expire after 12 months. Sedo says it does not withhold taxes. These terms are specific to Sedo’s stated rules, not an industry-wide standard, and should be checked against the current policy and your local tax obligations.

What earnings can you expect?

There is no supported typical-earnings figure here, and no independent provider-yield comparison. Do not assume that a parked domain will earn a particular amount per visit or month. Results depend on factors such as whether the domain receives genuine visitors, whether visitors click ads, and whether those interactions meet the provider’s rules. A domain with little or no relevant traffic may produce little or no revenue; a provider’s recommendation for a high-traffic domain is not a guarantee of returns.

Use provider reporting, where available, to assess actual visits and valid earnings over time. Consider parking one option for an unused domain, alongside holding it without parking or using a page focused on sale inquiries. Evaluate the outcome against the domain’s costs and your reason for keeping it rather than relying on an assumed industry average.
